Bullets that just won't shoot well?
yotebuster replied to bustedknuckleinc's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I had a .17 rem one time that started doing that when I tried moly coated bullets back when they were the rage. Shot 3/4 moa all day with 25gr bergers. Tried some 25 gr moly bergers and it started key holing and shooting patterns instead of groups. I switched back and t kept doing it with the bullets that i used to use. Turns out the barrel was really on its way out and he slick moly coating I the barrel put it over the edge. Tried scrubbing the heck out of the barrel to no avail. Ended up having to re barrel. Never shot as good after. -

Collect all of the juicy elk pies you find when you're scouting and keep them in Tupperware so they don't dry out. Then on opening day smear them all over yourself. -

I sent mine in after they slipped off my tripod and went plinko through a boulder pile. Totally my fault. Two broken Objective lenses. They recieved them and then sent me an estimate of $250 for replacing lenses. They had me "ok" it first and then I paid via credit card. I was happy as it was my fault completely. I realize vortex woulda sent me a new pair in the same scenario but in my opinion it's not worth the trade off for cheaper glass and Japanese mfg.

. That's only if you're putting the stud on EL's. The slc's are threaded and the outdoorsman adapter will thread right in. I asked outdoorsman why the Binos swivel slightly when the screw is tight and they said it was to keep it from backing out the stud screwed into the Binos. Makes sense to me. Mine will move slightly when the screw is tight, but it doesn't bother me a bit.

CVA and traditions muzzleloaders. Had one of each and both would only go off when they were in a good mood. Browning gold shotgun. Ran about 1 out of 4 times jammed the rest. Mossberg pump shotgun. Forearm split in half while shooting

Do you have a nov rifle hunt? Do you have a nov rifle hunt? ya- last week of Nov.They won't be rutting then. I've seen them breed cows and heard bugling that time of year but it's almost always little Bulls that are still hanging with cows that time of year (if any). I would look for Bulls to be bachelor herded up and in the most rugged stuff you can find.

Just getting into muzzleloader any suggestions
yotebuster replied to joelpresmyk8's topic in Muzzleloader hunting for Coues Deer
That's an awesome idea!! I love this site!!! -
I shot this big bodied ND whitetail with 55gr soft points. I put 8 rounds into his ribs as he ran quartering away. You could've laid a softball over the entry holes. About half hit rob on their way in and fragmented only making it to the near lung. The ones that made it between the ribs penetrated to the far lungs. The shots were from 80-120 yards. Would I do it again with cheap 55gr soft points and a big bodied eastern whitetail? Definitely not. Do I think a single well placed broadside shot with a good controlled expansion bullet would work on a coues. Heck yes.

I hate to say it but you are setting your standards pretty high. A 1.8" group at 100 is very very good for a muzzleloader. You can read all about people getting 1" groups etc but the reality of it is muzzleloaders are extremely finicky. The pressure you put down on the powder when you seat, the between shot swabbing (or not depending on what works) the amount of powder residue, type of sabot etc all are working against you and creating variables. I've had cva's, tc's, Knights, and most recently a Johnston ultimate, and to be honest with you I've never owned one that would CONSISTENTLY print 1" groups. I've shot lots of 1" groups but most of the time my consistent average for a good load was between 1.5-2". You'll find that you'll get things all dialed in and set up and go back a week later and it will change. You'll shoot a 1" group one day and think you have it all figured out and the next week it'll be 2.5" with a 6" flyer. Look for consistency more then group size in my opinion. I bought my Johnston ultimate last year and it's the first consistent gun I've ever owned. I think it has a lot to do with the priming system using center fire primers over 209 primers. There's almost no fouling left in the barrel even with a 200gr charge. I think this goes a long way in the consisrency. You can duplicate that by having a good between shot swabbing system but then again if you need follow up shots in the field it all goes out the window. A final thing I would say is once you get it dialed in, duplicate field scenarios. I don't mean shoot off your but etc, that is implied. I mean load it up and leave the charge in the barrel for a week or so in your truck and the. Cap it and shoot it at 150 yds etc. you'll find that changes in temp humidity etc will really screw with the loaded charge. None of your field shots are gonna be freshly loaded swabbed warm barrels placed seconds before they're fired. You're gonna load it up and it's gonna bounce around in the truck/quad for a few days being primed and un primed over and over and then finally get touched off. My Johnston handles this well. My TC was ok. My knight was super picky. I had to fire that gun every morning in camp. Do my between shot swabbing and load it back up daily to keep it consistent or it woild be6+" off. That makes for a major pain in the butt on hunts where you're staying in a hotel!! Good luck and don't forget that muzzleloader a really only have enough energy to 200-300 yards a 1.8" group will keep you minute of vitals to that range all day!! -
I'd take that ruger but I'm in ND. I'm guessing it won't last long.
-
My dad just bought the new ruger 77 in 17wsm. Sweet gun. Haven't shot it yet though so not much help there. I've heard and seen nothing but bad things about the savages though. Make sure you handle one and load the magazine etc before you buy. Haven't been around the one you pictured but the original B mag looks and feels like a BB gun.

When you say long slide how long is the barrel? I have a G20 that I have always considered shooting a deer with but need a 6" min length barrel here in ND -
Carrying Extra Rounds in the Field
yotebuster replied to firstcoueswas80's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
I put 10-15 in a tube sock and spin it a few times and throw it in my pack. Keeps them from clanking around. I always seem to have a few in my jean pocket too.
