Rifle Kick....looking for suggestions for next rifle
Redman replied to Redman's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Great info and thanks to all for the replies. Need to get off the bench, it has made me flinchy..... I have a Winchester 300 WSM Supershadow (not a high end gun, but still a pretty good shooter), a muzzlebreak will cost roughly around $300, not bad considering a new rifle will cost 3-4 times that....we have a .243 (my son's gun) been thinking of putting some work into it and "borrowing" it. Need to ask these questions now so I can get my rifle sent off or get a new one (since I am done for a year, hopefully after Jan I will not have to worry about a new rifle ....) Thanks Again, Redman -
The Claw: First time test Impressive.
Redman replied to bobbyo's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
Anybody use the claw with a Slik Sprint Pros EZ? I recently pickup a Claw and shot with it today, it was steady, but wonder if the tripod being used lead to it not being as steady as I had thought? Thanks Andy -
This week on my way to Lost Wages (Las Vegas), as I was driving through Boulder there was a herd of big horns off the side of the road in almost in Boulder.....they were there both days, these things did not have a care in the world. It was cool seeing them, pictures are from my Blackberry.

I was also new this year to ML. I did not buy a "starter kit" but picked up the following items: ML Cleaning Kit with extra patches T/C Bore Butter 209 Primer remover Blackhorn 209 T/C Powder Measure by volume 209 Remington Kleenbore Primers Sabots (settled on T/C Shockwave 250 grain with 90 grain of Blackhorn powder) "ramrod sabot adaptor, don't know what its officially called but made for your sabot so when you load it, it does not harm the tip) T/C speedloaders (black ones) Good luck it is fun to "tinker" Redman

That's is a tough situation, but I would go...the question is do I bivy or not? If I did bivy, I would be sure to setup at night in a location that is not "conducive" for smugglers to travel (top of the mountain or rocky slides, etc), once your hunting its like hunting in any other Southern Unit... Greetings, I have been reading the NM Game and Fish regs and cannot find what a legal deer is, I see FAD (Forked Antlered Deer), I have not hunted in New Mexico for 4 or 5 years and a deer used to have 3 points on one side (eye guard counted as a point).... I cannot find..... but I think a forked deer is now legal (two points on one side, eye guards do not matter).... can anybody help point me to the rule? Looking forward to my muzzleloader hunt in 23 in two weeks....anybody have that hunt? Redman

Bill, Thanks for the info, I searched the regs (withe Adobe search) once I saw your post and found it instantly. No eye guard required, just definite fork. I hope its a good time also. Andy

I was having issues with my T/C Omega grouping. Today I tried 250 gr T/C Shockwave with 95 gr Blackhorn powder, Remington Klenbore 209 primers. 3 inch groups at 100yds. Started with 100 grains of Blackhorn, groups were 4-6 inches (which were not much differnt that the other sabots I tired), backed down the powder to 95 gr and groups got noticeably smaller. Also.... first day using bore butter and LOVE bore butter....so much easier to load. Swabbed with spit and dry patch every three shots. May sound funny, but 5 grains less powder made all the difference for me. Redman

While I agree with Gino, but isn't the part stating "fair chase" again descriminating from hunters that choose to particpate in a legal method of hunting.....there are ranch, fence, high fence hunting that is legal....again differnt strokes for differnt folks...just something to think about... 2010 9-10 is when the hunt will start next year. When the bulls are not bugleing or responding to calls, the Sept hunt is like the Nov archery hunt...
-
There seems to be a very common theme on the quality of the archery hunts this year.... You only hope the person who shot was shooting at an animal, not just taking a shot at the sound or your son, one would think after you alerted the person they would "come clean". Just think, next year the rut will start on Sept 10! While scouting with a friend, we ran into a nice gentleman who was very excited to have an archery bull tag....he said "only 240 tags" this should be a great hunt, we said.....double that number.... there will be that many (240) more cow hunters.....I felt we just took the air out of him like a ballon... Thanks for sharing your hunt, the archery hunts this year really stunk. I hunted with a friend in 6AS and his hunt mimicked your story, very few bugles, herds with 3 to 4 bulls and cows, not responding to calls.....just a terrible hunt. He did have a few slim opportunities, but just could seal the deal. A good learning experience. Redman. p.s. who stayed at the water hole?

Sat in a blind last weekend, killed two scorpions, a few spiders, and had ants crawling all around and on me....that would be my only concern. Set my binos on the ground and picked them up, noticed something handing from the strap....in was a friggin scorpion!! I made sure my pants were touching my boots all day after that (thinking the insects would craw up my pants not under my pants) I also came upon two rattlesnakes. The joys of August! Redman

Ground blinds and photo radar
Redman replied to Non-Typical Solutions's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Stick..... heck with the stick....I was going to say a rock....no wait....we must tackle the animal and kill it with our bear hands, but only when when its not eating, because if they can't drink in peace they must be able to eat in peace..... Redman -
Sweet, I hope to someday have one in the bag. Hopefully today! Congratulations. Redman

Mullin's Got it done in a big way!
Redman replied to matthewp45's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Wetmule, I could not agree with you post any more! I personally am thankful for Jim (and others) taking the time to post thier story and pictures of thier hunt for me to read and enjoy, for a few minutes of a day I get away from this concert h e l l. Every time I visit this CWT (which is a free website for my enjoyment) I appreciate the pictures and stories people post (just read BML's archery coues story and it was awesome). I hope people continue to share thier success. Redman -
I would first call Zack at PSE Proshop in Tucson, then call Archery Headquaters, Ross Outdoors, and Broken Arrow. See if anybody has a string in stock. There are a ton of string makers on ArcheryTalk I am sure you can get one expedited (H&M Bowstrings, Little Johns, etc. http://www.archerytalk.com/vb/forumdisplay.php?f=103). You will need to take to a shop and have it put on. If all else fails, what is your draw length? You can borrow my PSE X-Force. Redman

What distance is your muzzleloader sighted in at?
Redman posted a topic in Muzzleloader hunting for Coues Deer
New to muzzleloader. Have a Thompson Omega with a Leupold scope, shooting Buckhorn 209 with 260 grain Deadcenter sabot. Wondering what you have your scope zero at. 100, 150, 200 yds??? Redman
