Help on Mulie hunt in Unit 23
Redman replied to Couestracker's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in New Mexico
I was there last weekend (first time) and hunted around Alma and Glenwood(Sunflower Mesa and Smoothing Iron) didn't see a lot of deer but the second and third day I saw around 15-20 a day. I had my chance at two big boys, but missed. I also hunted around Mule Creek the last night and that area would be a good choice. If I ever go back I would probably go to the wilderness area because of the roadies (truck hunters) and smokers (quads). Be prepared, 98% of the hunters I saw were road hunting. Some had 4 guys in the back of the truck standing up. It looked like a lynching was going to happen. This was very, very discouraging. Roads are everywhere and the people drive them all day long. The areas without roads were very heavily forested so glassing and walking would have been difficult. It was much different terrain than what I am used to and I hadn't hunted mule deer but once in high school. It was fun, if there were not so many road hunters it would have been great. I just didn't do my homework before this hunt other than looking at alot of maps. If you need more info send me a PM. Redman -
Bummer, ouch! That has never happened to me (knock on wood) hope you feel better. Redman

Great buck, Andy's spot wouldn't be in unit 33 would it?

Rembrant, The Mercers are letting enough people have access through their property. 25 is plenty, and if $20 is too much for a hunter, then they have picked the wrong hobie. A box of bullets costs more than their access. There are two other roads within 5 or 7 miles that people can still access. Redman

FYI Mercer Ranch is charging a $20 fee for entering his privite property and limiting the amount of hunters to 25. The Oct hunt is all booked up and Nov is filling fast. I totally understand and support them in thier effort, to many people don't respect others property and destroy what is not thiers, litter, and drive quads everywhere they shouldn't. If you plan on hunting on Mercer's ranch you better hurry and call them. Redman

LOOK AT THIS CRAZY GUY
Redman replied to JBONE777's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
That thing needs to be killed immediately, I would hate to see what he will do next year in the rut fighting with other bulls, he will kill many with that spear. Redman -
That Red Rabbit, I was wondering where I was going to purchase mine at, now I can do it from home. Redman

Wrong place, Mercer is in Mammoth. Redman

I am not sure where his land ends and where the roads ends, but there is public land behind his land. I'm sure what he is doing is legal. I heard that the Tommy Roads will also be locked in a similar manner if past instances happen again. More D: Mercer ranchis above Mammoth. Redman

Greetings, I got my New Mexico "carcass tag" yesterday. Its pretty different than an Arizona tag, it's just a sheet of paper. Anybody else get theirs? On the tag is states "this is not a hunting license, the hunter must purchase one separately". When I read the NM regs, it states hunting license are not issued to non-residents. Is there something else I need to do? (i am going to call the NM Game and Fish) Redman

Ernesto, Never apologize for your faith or blessing you give to others, the idiot that took offense will not save you on the day of reckoning, only your faith will. p.s. You've have always been polite and handled personal attacks very well. I don't know you (from what I have read on this board), but what I have read from you makes me believe your a class act. Redman

Ditto, use a potato peeler to start then remove the nock and soak in acetone for 30 seconds, rinse with H20 and Fletch. Make sure the shaft is clean, if not repeat. I use an Arizona EZ flecther with Blazers Vanes. The entire setup will cost you about $35, but in time you will pay for it over and over. Redman2002

Even though her initial reason for locking the gate was absurd and she is obviously suffering from a mental condition. This has now turned into something else, ALL locked gates. I hunted the area last year and I remember there were other locked gates in the general area. Her gate is blocking probably the most beautiful area, but if she has to unlock her gate, why wouldn't the other land owners who block BLM and state land have to unlock their gates? This will be very interesting, because there are locked gates everywhere blocking BLM and state land. Redman

Does the Game and Fish actually know when the results will be ready to post, or do they receive a call from SCI Nevada informing the results are posted (since the G&F is not actually posting the results)? Since the Sci-Nevda Company performs the web hosting, I bet they have a contract that states they need to have the results out or on July 29th. When SCI- Nevada has it done they will post it. I'm sure the G&F gets a heads up, but I doubt an officer in the field gets that information timely. It hard for me to think that unless these little birdies are working closely with the web hosting company they know when the website is ready and capable to post the results? Thats not to say the draw has not been performed. Publishing the results is a very different process. Redman

I am not sure if I want the draw results to come out, reading everybody posts is pretty amusing. .270 you had me LOL. For a brief minute I thought you were telling the truth. Redman

Sounds correct, I have read some studies performed by biologist at CSU using dogs and they found humans wearing scent eliminating clothing just as quickly as those not wearing them. I may be wrong on this point, but I believe deer have a better sense of smell than dogs. I think the best thing a hunter can do to limit his smell is to shower daily, avoid scented deodorant and detergents, oh and keep the wind in favor. Redman

Greetings, I have been wanting to take the hunter education course, but due to the limited offerings by the AZ G&F in Tucson and my own scheduling conflicts, I have not been able to take it. Don't get me wrong, I know the great folks that teach it do it on a volunteer basis so I am not complaining. I am trying to get my ducks in order to hunt in Colorado this fall if the AZ draw proves to be fruitless. Colorado requires hunters education or for archery only (which I plan to do) bowhunting education. Is there any private places that offer a accepted course? I would really like to take just the bowhunting course this year and next year take the rifle course with my son. Redman

Had a great time at the shoot. It was pretty awsome, top notch. Shot with some really nice people. The wind on Sunday made it tough, but hey its windy during hunting season. Fished a bit, I was upset that people not fishing on the reservation (aka the wife) have to now purchase a "recreation permit". When I asked the warden that checked us, he said " last year we had a lot of people coming out here not fishing reading books, sitting by the lakes and enjoying the outdoors and not purchasing a permit" I almost fell over after he said that, I replied with, isn't that what your supposed to do, enjoy the outdoors? Everything has a price tag now, even if the wife who wouldn't touch a fish for anything wants to sit with me and my 9 and 1.5 year old sons while we fish. I was reminded why I purchase a hunt and fish combo license each year, so I can take my wife and kids to a state lake and they can sit and enjoy the outdoors for FREE!! (at least for now). Redman

Looks like I am going to be able to make it, it sounds like fun. Redman

Greetings, I drew a NM unit 23 tag for mule deer (sorry for those who did not get drawn in NM) and I am very excited to go hunt in a place I have never before, in fact I have never killed a mule deer. Can anybody please point me in the a direction to begin my search of where to hunt. Major roads or landmarks? I live in Tucson (not that it matter much) Any information would be helpful and greatly appreciated. Redman
