Hey Scott, My Win 70 300 sm did the same thing once, never again. All I can say, is that ANYTIME you take a gun off safety. Make sure its pointed in a safe direction. Redman

I can sympathize with you, but if somebody is glassing off the side of the road, and if I intend to hunt there, I going to walk through that area. If your glassing right off the road (which I am not saying you were) you should expect somebody coming sooner or latter. I will not walk 300 yds and squat, I will walk over the ridge where the person is glassing and proceed. In some units, there are just too many dam roads, unit 32 is one. I agree with Rembrant, I make it a point to starting hiking at least 1 hour before sun up so this does not happen to me. Redman

Finally arrowed a sow yesterday. I had shot and missed at three different pigs prior to this one. We ran into three differnt groups this hunt. Watch out for the heard in Bueman Canyon and the Bellota Ranch area, they can dodge arrows, one pig in 37B can also dodge an arrow. Redman

CHD, Glad your sprits are up, I thought about your post this weekend while hunting. I was going to suggest taking out a new credit card and booking a Mexico hunt, then discharge it in bankruptcy, that would have to be better than killing yourself, when I first read your post I thought you were not serious, but then I thought what if? I busted a large heard today, I was walking in thick brush (in Bueman Canyon (33)spelling?) then they all started running everywhere, startled me. Took a shot at one about 20 yds and must have missed, called and called but never could find them again, then the rain started. Before this, I put a great stalk on a very nice buck, got within 50 yds, then a doe that I had not seen screamed at me. I almost stepped on her. The buck trotted away, called then the dang doe responded she came back within 10 yds of me? I have never had a doe responded to a buck call. Off again tomorrow hopefully the weather is better. Congratulations on a nice deer, A very similar thing happened to me. The night before I was going to leave on my hunt, a jerk broke into my father in law?s backyard and stole the quad I was going to borrow. Lucky for me, its good to have good friends. I was able to borrow a quad. The whole situation still sucked. The quad was found on Thursday, the guy who stole it drove it to Taco Bell and car jacked a lady in a Mercedes, I guess she was not injured. They later caught the creep. Now he has skipped his court appearance. REMEMBER HOMEOWNERS DOES NOT COVER QUADS! Redman

Hey PSEHunter, A word of advice, make sure you take the call out of your mouth BEFORE you draw back your bow. I called on in last year Jan to about 10 feet and when I let the string go, my call was in my mouth and hit the string. Redman

coozfever, Yeah its me, Redman. I did get a tag and lets say I got a little trigger happy and shot a 2x2 with decent eye guards in 32 on OPENING DAY. I still do not know what I was thinking. Not that it was a bad buck, but I had the entire hunt off to find a qualtiy deer and took a deer on the first day that I told myself all year I wasn't going to do. Oh well, they say you should never pass on a buck the first day, that you would love to shoot the last day? RIGHT?? Redman

Hey Mike there are a couple of people that visit this site from San Manuel. Your pictures are awsome. Good Luck, Andy Stephens

Greetings, Does anybody have any information on the NM 17-23 hunt? I know the units don't have any coues deer (or do they). The units are 54,55,56,57 or 58. My AZ hunts starts Friday, and if things go well I may be able to seek over to NM.. I would like to use the rest of my vaction doing something productive, I am not looking for anything great, I would like to see a deer or two. How is the access? ANY info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Redman

To kill a 120 lb deer at best (coues deer is what were are talking about right), to my knowlegde there is no flatter or faster shooting gun than a 243. Get some hot reloads and you're looking at less than 30 inches of drop at 500 yds and probally over 1000 pds of energy. Go ahead and look it up the 300 wsm or 300 mags or 3006 don't even come close, knock down power is a differnt story. But when you can pull the trigger and watch you bullet hit the target because the kick is not so hard it will be easier to place the second shot. Redman

I heard from a friend that it was tight in the mule mtns, there were alot of hunters. The party took 2/3 deer, the biggest was a smaller 3 pt and an average 2pt. The other hunter shot at fork but missed. I wonder if this unit should be shut down for 2 years to let it recoup and work out access routes with land owners. Redman

Sometimes, you need to put yourself in the other guys boots. My fahter in law is on his last leg, this could have been his last deer hunt. He would have loved to shoot the spike my nephew shot on Friday (which was his first deer). I know guys who are not good hunters, never was shown as a kid, have not developed hunting skills and have not killed a buck in 3+ years of trying. They would be gitty to shoot a spike. We shouldn't put too much on the kill, but when you have never killed or may never kill again, its not as simple as it sounds. What is legal is legal. Personally, I would not mind if the law was changed to a fork horn on one side, but the law is what it is spikes are legal. Redman

No matter what the recommendations were going to be, it would be impossible to make everybody happy. With that being said, most couse deer units never had a 10% cap so these ruling will have a limited impact on the gray ghost. Of all the recomendations, I personally like requiring applicants to pay up front process the most. I know too many people who put in for an elk, sheep, or buffalo tag for the $5.00 fee with the state of mind of ?what if?. I am guilty of this and I can promise you, I won't be applying for buffalo anymore. The increase in bonus points pass is good. Increasing the fees and separating premium hunts is also a good idea, this will impact the coues deer December hunts, but I doubt the fee increase will really keep a resident from applying. I would hate to manage the refunds and application process. Its going to take longer, I can guarantee it. Redman

If you drink beer, you should be drinking Budweiser. Golden Eagle Distributors Inc. is pleased to announce that during the 2004 hunting season, one cent for every case of Budweiser sold in our territory will go directly to the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF). The NFWF will match it dollar for dollar, and will distribute the funds to Budweiser's outdoor conservation organizations: Ducks Unlimited, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Buck Masters American Deer Foundation, Quails Unlimited, Delta Water Fowl, Quality Deer Management Association, and other deserving organizations. Has anybody been over Redington Pass lately (in the last month)? How is the road, rough or ok? Last year I found it quicker and easier to drive through San Manuel to Redington to get to the back side of the Rincons (from Tucson) than fight the pass road. Redman

Sorry, nothing to do with hunting
Redman replied to DesertBull's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Sorry Desertbull, you can thank NAFTA for your job loss. You know what? Everybody thought Ross Perot was a whack job at the time, but go back and see what he said about NAFTA and this man was DEAD ON! REDMAN -
Trouble and Danger in UNIT 34A
Redman replied to BACKCOUNTRY's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
For those who think the illegals have a significant positive impact on the economy because "they take the jobs American's won't" need to research the issue a little bit more and not repeat everything heared. I have researched this issue, and the negative impact illegal citizens have on this country is greater than benefits. With that being said, I hate to see people dying to get in this great country while others (citizens) in this country take every freedom for granted. If you ever camped in Southern AZ and came back to your camp to find it raided, your blood will boil and your feelings will change. Do we know at this point who murdered this hunter? No! Could have been somebody he knew him, drug runners, or illegals? YES.. All the above, only time will tell. The border remains a huge issue to this country and the land that supports the life of our passion, the gray ghost. Is it anybody?s fault? Yes, our government, that we elect, is not doing enough to keep our country safe. Then need to stop worrying about their political career build a barrier, put the US Military on the boarder, and stop illegal immigration of all nationalities NOT JUST Mexicans. This is why we PAY TAXES! Just wait until what is happening is Russia happens in the US, will it be the illegals Mexicans performing these barbaric acts? NO, but with the border so wide open our families are in danger. As AZ4Life said, protect yourself when hunting and think twice about the officials we elect. Ross Perot was correct, that sucking sound you hear are the high paying American jobs being sucked to Mexico, the bill (NAFTA) that passed though with the support of both parties, the demoncrats and the dumblicans. Just ask Desert Bull! Redman! -
Trouble and Danger in UNIT 34A
Redman replied to BACKCOUNTRY's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
While there is no way to prove from an article who actually murdered this man (somebody who knew him or unknown person), anybody who has hunted in S AZ has had to of seen the waste left by illegals or has been a victim of theft. Regardless of who murdered this man, hunting and camping is S AZ is dangerous. Just as AZ4LIFE mentioned it is time for the US government to protect its citizens and its land. Everybody on this board should write a letter to the AZ congress/representatives telling them its time for them to do their job and secure our boarder. Here is the contact information. http://www.visi.com/juan/congress/cgi-bin/...te=ctc&state=az Redman -

Last year three friends obtained left over tags in the unit. All three shot, one tagged a smaller 2 pt (in the mule mtns). I went with one friend for two days, we saw about 10 deer, two bucks that we could never get one. We walked around a bit checking out the area. I would actully like to hunt the area someday. We found a spot about 4 ridges (about 6 miles) back off the main highway to Bisbee that was prestine. The walk was tough and you could never get there in time if you left in the morning with a flashlight, it took about 2-3 hours. I would love to be there at sunup. On the last day of the hunt, my friend (i was not with) missed what he called Mr. Big. There were 6 bucks sparring in a circle. He setup to shoot when the guy he was with said "oh that is a big deer" then the friend began to shake and the rest was history. They saw these bucks one ridge over from the highway. There is a mountain range with a coral and H20 tank at the base. We parked about 1 mile down from the turn off that goes to Douglas (i think its Douglas its about 12 miles from Bisbee). Thats all if know. Andy

Manamal, Last year I fooled around with a call in Jan, I called in a few deer, most of the time the deer will stop and look back, but one deer I will never forget. I spotted a group of deer walking through the trees (unit 33 Rincons). As I began to get close (60-80 yds). All I saw were white flags running everywhere. I blew on my call and buck (I think was a 3pt) stoped, turned around, and made a b-line straight towards me. I kneeled down below a small mound and panicly tried to take my pack off. My range finder was caught on the pak's chest buckle which made manners worse. When I finally got my pack off, the deer was standing no more than 5-10 yds from me stomping the ground. I pulled back, and let the arrow go. All I saw was my call flying and the deer running away. I forgot to take the dang call out of my mouth. The bow string caught it when I released it. My heart which was was beating about 180 bps seemed to stop as the call flew to the ground. I tell you, there was no way I was going to miss the shot, all my pins were on the deer. So, yes calls do work, but make sure you take them out of your mouth when releaseing your arrow! Redman
