Let me begin by saying that for years I could not stand that "everyone" started naming elk!! Well now here I am...... At any rate this story started last year when I harvested the "chapstick bull". He was named this because we had bulls going good to the West and East of our camp. We flipped a chapstick in the air to decide which way to hunt that day... Hence the chapstick bull..... My hunting partner Maiocco also harvested a good bull last year on the same hunt.. Which brings us to this year. After hunting for 10 days and calling in and passing on many bulls that were just not what I wanted, and 3 separate encounters with a 380 bull that did not turn out in my favor, we decided to change tactics. Manny (my hunting partner) and I had a conversation.... I said " I am tired of calling in all these bulls that are just short of what I want to shoot". Manny agreed and said, "if it was my hunt I would glass until I found the bull I wanted, and then hunt just him, Might not be as much fun, but a better way to kill a good bull" we agreed and off we went that after noon. Another friend in camp had purchase an apple pie in town that day, and reminded us that it would not be eaten until a good bull was killed. After glassing a hillside for awhile we glassed up two average (300) bulls. Manny said I have a better bull down and to the right.. After looking him over for several minutes I made the call that although he is not the 380 I had been chasing I would be pleased with this bull. At that point I told Manny, " If you can call me that bull I will serve you apple pie tonight myself!!" Manny said, "well then, that's his name; "The apple pie bull". We watched this bull slowly moving to the north 1/2 up a mountain. We ran 2 miles to get ahead of him and hiked up to what we thought would be the correct elevation on the hill. Manny started softly calling to him and he would answer back, but way off. Slowly but surely the bull was coming in. Manny worked his magic, and let me tell you Manny is the best caller I have hunted with!!! (Thanks Manny, don't let it go to your head)... After 45-min to an hour the bull came in bugling and looking for his next girl friend. He stopped quartering toward me at 47 yards. Whack!!! He spun, fell to the ground, got up and ran over another finger running down the Mountain. We found the fletched end of the arrow where he fell. Manny told us to look for blood at the shot, and he was going to walk to the top of the finger and look for blood. After maybe two minutes I hear Manny shouting!!! I sprinted up to him and put glasses on the bull. He was dead less than 4 min. after the shot.... I want to thank Manny for putting in a ton of miles and hard work with us on this hunt two years in a row... Thanks bud..... I know that I will probably not draw another elk tag for years, but it has been a great couple of years...... Now, time to get my kids on some good hunts... Thanks for reading, Whitey

I will be the first to say what many are thinking...... I think hunting an elk with a .223 is unethical as heck... I know it can kill an elk, so can a 22 or a blow gun dart if it is perfect........ But....... I would never do it! My kids have a .243 and I am not sure I would let them use it on a cow hunt. Sensationalizing using a tiny bullet to kill an elk.??? Not a good idea Whitey

Well done Dogman; it is never easy this time of year! One of the hunts I was most proud of the dogs happened on the Kaibab in July (back when you could) and it was well over 100, and dry as a bone. Started off a kill and took about 5 hours of hammering around... Again well done, and have a good year.. Whitey

Sighting my Bow for G5 Montecs of Mechanicals?
lionhunter replied to rossislider's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
Every 100 montec i have ever weighed was 105 gr.mine hit a bit lower than field tips. If yours hit high it is a tuning issue... Mark your sight with a pencil bump the whole sight basket up a tad and you should be good. I think the montec is a great choice for elk! I have seen bad things happen with mechanicals! -
My boy got drawn for a hunt we did not put in for?? 30b nov? It might be time to learn some new ground!

I have never had a problem in the woods, I lock my ranger to a tree if I am out in a busy area. Lately I just turn the wheels sharp and put "The club" on the steering wheel. If they want it that bad they are going to take it... Whitey

I Just spoke with two different friends who were down in 36-c on the Dec . deer hunt. they both glassed up lion, One glassed two different lions on different days, and missed them both, and the other glassed 3 together, (all adult lions) and shot one, found blood, but could never find the lion. At any rate someone with some good dogs please go down and muck some lions out....... Whitey
