    Seeing The Pins

I am going through this now. Sounds like a verifier will work for you, which is a "reading glass" in the peep. A clarifier is similar but is used with a magnified site. If you see distance ok then you just need a little correction to see the pins better. I just had one installed at Timber Mesa. I think I chose too much magnification and need to go back and try another. Here is a video describing it.
  2. So, my eyes don't focus so well up close anymore, which causes my pins to be a bit fuzzy. I really don't like wearing glasses while hunting. I have a verifier peep sight on order through the local archery shop to help focus my pins. Anyone use this? Opinions? Alternatives?
  3. Yeah, I do shoot with both eyes open and that helps...I can get by. Just trying to make improvements. I also have astigmatism in that eye, so I don't know if the verifier will help. It's a $60 experiment 😣
  4. No. I have some scar tissue in my right eye from RK procedure 20 years ago. It feels like I have a spec of dirt under the contact.

    Fall away rest help

I went to a QAD HDX last year and love it. Several factors can cause fletch contact: rest timing (set with the cord length), rest not at center shot, arrow spine too weak, tall fletching (more than 1/2"), bow torque (poor grip/release). Shoot through paper at about 6 feet. The tear can give some indication.

    Elk arrow locked in

I agree. My arrows seem to hit square. I had the string/cable replaced and setup by Timber Mesa, here in Mesa. I checked the "paper tune" and looks good. I have shot Thunderheads and G5's so far and both POI same as field points, at 30 yds. I will experiment with 125's. Not sure if an extra 25 gr. will make a difference? Thanks for the knowledgeable replies!

    Elk arrow locked in

Mulepackhunter, That should be a killer arrow! I am a bit concerned with my arrow weight. I am shooting Gold Tip Hunter XT, 416 gr. with 100 gr. Thunderheads. 30" arrow, 64 lb draw weight, 260 fps. I also have 125 gr. Thunderheads that I will experiment with. I have a Sept archery bull tag. I have not shot an elk with carbon arrows. I have killed 4 elk with an old PSE, heavy aluminum arrows, the same Thunderheads, shooting with fingers (no release). One shot, all dropped within sight. I am an advocate of heavy arrows. I have read many threads on this subject...a lot of varying opinions. Is this arrow weight/setup adequate?

What's burning down south by Roosevelt,

Yeah, I thought so. We were up high in the Mazatals today. Noticed it this morning. On the way out around 1:00, it was getting windy and the smoke doubled in size.

    Trail Camera Opinion/Review?

I saw those. I checked reviews, which state "very slow trigger and recovery times", so I didn't buy them. They will probably be ok if you set them up looking down a trail or at a salt block. Try to avoid a passing shot or you may only get a rear end.

    Cabover pop up camper

I've been thinking of one of these, but I'm getting resistance from my wife. Maybe I'll have to take a look at it.

    Portable evap coolers

You would have to draw outside air or the humidity would realy build up and defeat the purpose. I mounted a side draft to the side of my garage. It works well...when the dew point is low.

    Lets talk boots

I like my Meindel Perfykt Hikers...on my 2nd pair. The first pair are still wearable, just not much tread left. I'd like to check out Crispi too.
  15. I have a series of pics that I believe is a lion attack of a spike buck. What say you? Looks like a lion attacks from right to left Looks like a deer leg sticking straight up No leg in the air

Lion attack on my trail cam?

I forgot to take my card reader with me, so I just swapped cards and waited until I got home to look at the pics. I usually have a snack and go through the pics on site, but not this time. Now I will have to go back to investigate. The attack happened 2.5 months ago, so not sure what will be left.

Lion attack on my trail cam?

I wasn't sure if it's a tail or deer leg. The tip looks weird, kinda stubby.

    Backpacks

Eberlestock X2 is a good choice for a day pack...and can pack out a quarter. Return with the frame pack and a couple buddies to get the rest.

  20. Rem 700 in .270. Love that rifle/caliber. Easy to shoot and easy to carry.
  21. As usual, camofire is tempting me to spend money. Recently the Suunto Traverse Alpha watch was offered on their site for a good price. Every time it pops up, I find myself researching it. Overall, great reviews, with some minor issues. I'm undecided due to I don't typically wear a watch and this type is big and bulky. I am a gadget guy, but am getting a little annoyed by all the technology, especially when it doesn't work properly. I like the idea of having some features while hunting/hiking...gps, compass, barometer, maybe the route tracking. I guess the question is, is it worth the $350 for these "cool" conveniences, or will it be an anoying gadget that lays on the dresser. I would appreciate hearing your experienced oppinions.

    Layering for cold weather

I have invested in the Kuiu stuff and like it. It works for me. I wear bargain merino wool base layers (Core 4 Element). I have the Kuiu zip off wool bottoms if colder (love the zip off concept). My mid-layer is a First Lite hoody and/or the Kuiu Peloton 240 full zip. Outer layer is the Kuiu Superdown or the Kenai jacket. These have tremendous warmth to weight ratio. You don't even know these are in your pack.

    Shed a teer

This thread causes me to reflect on my relationship with my Dad. I was on my annual vacation this week, back in Indiana to visit family. I moved from there to AZ 38 years ago, at age 20. This trip, I visited him in a nursing home. He had a stroke last Nov. He didn't get around well before the stroke, and now he's doing PT to get that back. He's doing better than expected, but will probably never go home again. It's tough to watch the parents age, especially away from home. We were never very close. Seems like every time we did things together we fought. He wasn't a great father, but did what he knew how. His younger brother (my uncle) got us into archery and bow hunting. It was something we could do together. I killed my first deer with a 40# Bear recurve and cedar arrow. He helped me hang it in a tree, then left to "scout another area". He didn't like blood. He didn't stick with hunting. He doesn't seem interested in hearing about my adventures. About 10 years ago he drove here to join me on my archery elk hunt in 5B-S. He was in camp for a few days, then got ticked about something and left while I was out hunting. I came back to camp and he was gone. That still hurts. If you still have a father around, cherish the moments together, especially if he can still join you on hunts. I have some good memories with my Dad...and some not so good. It gave me a clear view of what I wanted to pass on to my kids, and what I didn't want to pass on. Now I have an opportunity to "get it right" with my grandson.
