- just my .02 you may never agin see the populations of elk that we use to have ! most of our state is being over hunted - the g$f has systematically been killing off -way too many of - the cows , for several yrs now you take 3-5 hundred cow elk out of the herd - that could add up to -mature cow 1-2 calves a yr. - 700 to 1000 elk for that yr- in 3 yrs you are talking 5000 or more easily I'm not a numbers guy but i'd guess in 5 yrs those cows may have increased the herd by 7-10,000 elk

MY ATTITUDE I've never touch a camera- blind etc.- never will- just we've seen so many post on stuff stolen blinds/camers etc. - my pop-up comment meant if its yours -you can just as easy to take with you when you leave we all know anything you leave has a good chance to be stolen - we all know "sometimes" items are left kinda reserve a spot. we also know a lot of property has been confiscated by fs personell no -leaving it over night is not a big deal - justsaying the way things are - if you leave it -you kinda gota expect someone to take it - my comments weren't meant to be personel- so easy to take things out of context- but whatever agin like i stated sorry your stuff was taken!
-
how long was it left there - no reserve parking allowed -? thats why they are pop-up - easy to take with you sorry stuff stolen but why leave it? nothing new - a chance ya take -just like the cameras here today - gone tomorrow

I can see his point - they preach its for the kids - get our young hunters in the field - and when its time for them to step up and help "FINISH" the class - like sorry class is full? we dont do it here- only thing available is tucson if its not full already - - the online class makes it easier to pass the exam but without the field day to complete it - - its got to be frustrating - locals shouldnt have to drive to tucson for this - why isnt there something at ben every every month - there has got to be local guy who "could do this" at least once a month! how many are in a class to make it full??

I'm sure he'd make a great mount - shoulder mounts will most likely go 400+ how big a whole in your pocket can you handle ? you can buy a kit and mount the antlers yourself- several at Cabelas - european mounts are cool - a guy with beetles can clean deer skulls for around 100 -several of those around

Bad idea to switch Ammo brands night before hunt?
elkaholic replied to jcarter's topic in The Campfire
bad - it is the WORSE thing you can do before going hunting - go buy 2 boxs of any other brand and resight gun before actual hunt -! -
can someone look in the record book for long range shooting-- uhh --- can anyone find the 270 ever holding any record
-
I dont want to sound - well - i took my new tc venture out to the range for site in for elk - factory loads 165 were not impresive but i switched to 180 rem corelock had a 4 shot group ya could cover with a quarter at 100 - with a 4x nikon! basically right out the box with factory loads. that was an 06 each gun will have a sweet load - harder to find with factory loads - handloaders have the edge . i know of a remington 788 in 6 mm with a cheap bushnell scope =sportview - at the gong range was dinkin all the way out to 700 - guys first trip ever to longrange - with factory ammo!
-
no doubts on the flatter trajectories - it's the end results that are comparable i agree with all the new bullets / powders etc. that the handloader has the advantage of tweekin a super load for long range - for hunting purposes bigger can be better the .308 set standards / records for yrs in the long range shoots. "long range shooting has evolved in many ways. One of the major trends is towards smaller calibers. Calibers as small as 6mm, and even .224" are commonly being used in 600 and 1000 yard prone and benchrest competition. In spite of the once common knowledge that “bigger is better” for long range shooting, the “benchmark” has shrunk from the big .30 cal magnums to the more moderate 6.5mm. Long range championships are being won with the tiny 6mmBR "

What the.....????? ok minor mis statement - the 30-378 instead of 338 - my mistake i was refering to energy at 1000 and i took it to mean ft lbs. referring to recent article in the western hunter discussing ballistic performance at 1000 yrds. i'm not gonna try to quoate whole chart - 150 grain - b.c. 0.49 -- 30-378 - MV-3560 -energy 4224-- 300 win-MV-3290 - energy 3608--- 308- MV 3000- energy 2998 at 10000 yrds - vel 30-378-1590-energy 850 - vel 300 win- 1442-energy-695 -- vel 308 1228 ,energy 552 180 gr - b.c. .52 -- 30 -378 MV -3420- energy 4675 -- 300 win - MV 3130- energy 3914 -- 308- MV 2880- energy 2880 -energy 3041 at 1000 vel- 30-378 1716 energy -1176 -- 300 win - vel- 1532- energy-938 -- 308- vel-1302-energy -678 sorry for my misquote at less than 200 but " AT 1000 YRDS THE MAGNUMS START OUT WITH HUGE MARGINS OF ENERY AT THE MUZZLE - BUT THEIR MARGIN IS AS NARROW AS 400 OR EVEN 200 FT-LBS AT 1000-" you need to read the article in the latest western hunter - Bullet Proof - basically the 308 can out-perform the bigger magnums accross the board at 800 yrds. here agin i'm quoting the article - not from personel experience.

I gotta ask if this is for hunting or just makin the metal clang!- where's Mark at - he's the .308 guy - 125coues give us some insight(lol) to long range .308 it's not just the caliper or the high dollar scope as much as the gun itself !! when ya get out to 1000 yrds the difference in ft lbs bewteen the 300 338 and the 308 are less than 200 anyway-- (edit meant 400 but my mistake) sorry my reply in next post

there was only one comment posted to the story Posted: Friday, October 14, 2011 Article comment by: Brandi martin This is my uncle. I hope and pray everyday that the police will find the person that did this to him. He was a great person. Did everything he dreamed to do in life. how many hunters knew this person ?-any idea how many people go thru the area in a day - a week etc. especially during hunting season.
