  1. hello - from some information that is going around - some of these same "groups ' are responable for taking female urine and attracting the cats from accross the border. For the sole purpose of disrupting the system and being able to claim these animals have been here all along and need protecting ! From most sourse these animals occassionally crossed into the U.S from Mexico but never in a mating pair looking to establish new territory ! I think the g&f did all the could to see Macho had every possible expert in the field present and have imput on the decissions that were made. As usuall the press prints inaccurate information and the thing blows up and these activists think they are doing something good ,when in fact they are making the situation even worse . what are they going to prove with this laww suit . It's like - we'll show those guys they can't get away with this , when in fact nothing illegal happened ! Gary

hello - setting up stand sites- nlacost- Don't get me wrong but i picture corn feeders / blocks of salt /other forms of baiting etc. If I find a spot next to a spring or creek-with good sign - I may sit and evening or morning - maybe a saddle ,witha worn trail . I've never been in one place long enough to give thought of setting up a stand. I'm sure there are areas that you may be able to pattern a deers movement - Especially if you got the time to do so! I'm not trying to be judgemental of how one hunts or prepares for a hunt! setting up stand sites- to be honest a bit of jealousy- maybe - I wish you the best of luck and hopefully you'll draw a tag for your areas ! gary

    dropping horns

hello - seen 3 bucks on the 15th may - one had one antler - others had both -- never seen a whitetail with horns - Gary
  4. hello - All that bonus point 1stchoice -2nd choice % this- that -- AHHHHHHHHHHH-- way to confusing to me - I have been for the last 3 yrs. trying to get them to change a very simple item - it aint possible -- go to page 112 of the regulations - -this is under lawfull methods for taking wilfdlife - #9 turkey : To take turkey: a. Centerfire rifles; b. Muzzleloading rifles; c. All other rifles using black powder or synthetic black powder; d. Centerfire handguns; e. Handguns using black powder or synthetic black powder; f. Shotguns shooting slugs; g. Bows with a standard pull of 40 or more pounds, using arrows with broadheads no less than 7/8 inch in width with metal cutting edges; h. Crossbows with a minimum draw weight of 125 pounds, using bolts with a minimum length of 16 inches and broadheads no less than 7/8 inch in width with metal cutting edges; i. .22 rimfire magnum rifles; j. 5 mm rimfire magnum rifles; k. .17 rimfire magnum rifles; and l. Shotguns shooting shot. we all know for several years now #g- and #l are the only lawfull methods of taking a turkey !!maybe #h - I've contact g&f several times = talked to several people - the only answer I can get is it needed to be voted on by the commission to change the wording in the regulations - It was suppose to happen before this printing - ooops - one would think once they passed -changed the law to only allow shot guns shooting shot - other than the bow season - that would be all it takes - ???????? come on game and fish - lets go -- proof read some of this stuff!!! Soloution to carry your Range Finder

Yeah, sorry for taking so long to comment back. You can't use any "Electronic device as an aid" I beleive it says this verbatim on their websites. I will look and see if I can post a link. hello -- well sorry but shot that one right out of the air :::: From: Pope & Young Club <admin@pope-young.org> Date: Tuesday, May 26, 2009 5:38 AM To: 'Hanson' <elkaholic93@cox.net> Subject: RE: Web Site Inquiry Size: 6 KB We would accept an entry using a range finder as long as the range finder is not attached to the bow. Thanks, Glenn Hisey ::::just came in my email - thought it might help -- Gary

To shoot?... or not to shoot?

hello - - i didnt want to get into the - not being able to spend time scouting or days hunting or experience judging antelope - affording a guide - how many bucks you've already seen etc.. Most of the guys passing probably all have taken bucks and are looking for something bigger and better - I'll bet the majority of bucks killed by normal everyday joes will not score 70 -or even go 15in.- Of course guys who spend the time scouting and or get guide service will have all the advantages of looking over lots of bucks- I'm no expert but if and when I get a tag -I'm not gonna shoot the first buck I see just to fill the tag, but by mid week a nice (average) buck will be in trouble - the guys who know and have see big bucks will hold out till the last day -- kinda like elk hunters - everyone knows that 400 class bulls are around and they have even seen them - so they pass on a 350 bull that walks by a 20 yrds . thats a big mistake in my book because most of the common joes may never get close enough for a shot at a monster-- be it bad luck or inexperience - #1 buck - like i said the angle of pic - had mass- judging from width comparied to the eye - but looked a little short - couldn't really tell the length - I'm sure all that comes with experience - and seeing lots of lopers - I did say shoot . #2 buck is what every joe would shoot without question. gary

    kaibab lake

hello - the lakes close to williams can get a lot of people on the weekends - week days are best - cataract and kiabab are not bad ! you can catch trout from a boat or shore - I've caught fish on bait - off the bottom from shore - get the yellow /orange power bait or casting assort lures from shore works- Dogtown is a bigger lake and should be a good time, the same for white-horse - same techiques on all these lakes - casting from a boat or trolling around can actually be better for the bigger fish ! good luck - Now if you are catch and release 2 lakes to try are Perkins tank and Jd tank- both were taken over by the fly fishing guys but fishing with single barbless lures is allowed. no bait fishing! It was not uncommon to catch 16+ inchers -solid 2 lbers. from shore at both these lakes - 4-5 yrs ago and since then it's catch and release only - both are great lakes for a better quality trout ! gary

Soloution to carry your Range Finder

hello - i read all that but i wasn't 100 % convinced a rangefinder fell under that clause - but it does give you an unfair advantage - so i sent an email to the head guy at pope&young and will probably get a reply soon! If range finders are infact illegal for use ,with the guide lines of fair chase , for the records - guess it would be an big dissadvantage for most archers. Then an arrow with the light on impact nock would be illegal also ! very interesting! thks for replying - gary - you handled the pope and young. -- now for b&c unless of course any elk rejected by pope and young for whatever reasons would automatically be rejected by b&c.

To shoot?... or not to shoot?

hello - I guess for most of us hunters who have never taken an antelope and aren't as determined to take a monster buck , it's not hard to decide. Most of us may only ever get one tag, so just about any picture you post is a shootable buck - I'm positive a lot of bambi antelope will fall this year. Thanks for posting the great pics -keep'm coming - gary

To shoot?... or not to shoot?

hello - think I'd have to pull the trigger -kinda a weird angle but looks to have good mass- from most of the different forums - mass is the key factor on lopers - so drop'm quick! gary

Taking Hunter Ed one step further

hello - youth hunting camps- I know when my son was 12 he went for 5 days to a place on the north end of mormon lake - facilites were kinda primative - shacks w/ wood slat bunk beds but they had - a 22 range - shot-gun shooting clay pigeons - a tracking and first /aid course etc. fly fishing at a pond etc.-they took'm to lake mary for a day - he had a great time - they offered decent meals - nightly camp fires .etc - it was a resonable fee- i don't really remember everything - I know different organizations AES- ADA - have weekend youth camps - we need more of these for our youths. hello - krp- just looking at any map and reading the 3 main mt. ranges isn't giving away too many secrets - . you and I both know and probably have secret little spots that always seem to produce bucks. some may be easy to get to others - not so easy - In my younger days it was drive to the top of mt. ord get dropped off and walk a ridge to the bottom. Sometimes you pick the wrong one - never twice mine you- something that seemed easy looking turned into a disaster. now I prefer the bottom ridges along the creek bottoms ! Packing into any wilderness is a unique experience to say the least - taking everything to sustain yourself is not as hard as trying to figure out what to do - now if you have to contend with a rookie who just doesn't believe its that hard a task to accomplish! Hat's off - good luck - check his pack before you go - - Gary

hello - if you are talking coues hunting in 22 - why think they are limited to the rim area - 4 peaks is loaded-- mt. Ord is loaded - the Mazatzals is probably one of the underated areas for monters coues - If you are passing on 22 from what you seen while elk hunting on the rim - - oh well - - If you want a true wilderness experience try packing into the Mazatzals - get into the limestone hills south of the east verde and you are in country few have ever been. I've heard tales of guys doing the mule trains and having to spend nights fighting off mountain lions and bears - after 3 nights of no sleep they came out! - you want a cat fight - brave the back side of the Mazatzals !! I was takin coues off mt. ord back in the 80's - Oh well just my .02cents-- gary

Soloution to carry your Range Finder

Hello - perhaps you can back up this statement and direct me to the location of proof. I have read a few things and never came accross anything that makes me to believe the use of a range finder makes an animal exempt from entry . I may be wrong. i know p&y talks about use of electronic devices for locating and giving unfair advantage! B&C states anything legal by state regulations ---- Seems like the range snap product could be very usefull- if you actually owned a rangefinder ----- Gary

    Unit Jumpers?

What makes you think something like that ? Try unit 29 - A game and fish did a survey and stated 4 bucks to every doe. so they uped the tags this yr. The local ranchers wanted to know how g&f got this information - On the spring round-up they had 10 guys on horeseback for 5 days all over the back country. they seen a total of 2 does -- period !

    Unit Jumpers?

hello - yep gonna unit jump - . I was turkey hunting and had a pleasant surprise show- up-a group wht-tails - 3 bucks 2- does - gotta watch 'm for 90 min. and they were nice enough to parade by at 30 yrds. a forky - a big 3 point with one antler and a really nice 4x4 - biggest eye guards I ever seen 6 in. + his g-1 's at 8 in. the g3&4 about 2-3 in. He was as wide as his ears and good length - nice mass - a solid 100+ in anybodies book ! I'd like to put a tag on his new and improved rack next yr.!! I know I'm dreamin but seeing one is 1/2 the battle !! Gary

    NRA Convention

hello -- guns - guns -guns and more guns from every manufactor and custom dealer from accross the U.S. - hands on makes a show like this one a success! Anything to do with guns and reloading could be found. some hunting stuff also. Losts of interesting items - kinda hard to see everything but i tried my best. Watching and listening to Ted Nugent was inspiring. This country needs more men- like him -willing to take on the challenges we face to keep America free , proud to fight for our american heritage and speak the truth for all to hear ! I'm sure you can go to Ted's website and watch this seminar/show if you missed it !! Well worth it !! Gary

  22. hello - while turkey hunting we had an unique experience with a few coues. One buck only had one antler so guess it's time for some brownie's to start showing up! This one experience that was worth the whole trip- We were at a tank -unnamed-looking for tracks and had 5 wht-tails show up on the dam - 3 bucks 2 does - the one buck was a small forky , one buck had only one antler but he was a big 3 point -western count- and the other was a jaw dropper 4x4 -He had a set of eye guards the were at least 6-7 in and his G-2's were at least 8 in. his g-3 and 4 were small maybe 2-3 in. great mass and nice spread as wide as his ears . nice length to the main beams .A solid 100+ we got a real GOOD look at him -we were using my leopuld 8x25. What made this special was they fed around the tank and walk right in front of us at less than 30 yrds. we watched them dance around and chase each other around in the water's edge for 90 minutes. What makes this even stranger was we were sitting in lawn chairs right out in the open next to the truck. we were parked at the corner of the tank in plain view. big white dodge. go figure - no camera -- lol -- we had fun- no turkeys. Now i got to decide if i should put in for unit 8 this year - that was anice buck a shooter in anybody's book - not huge but i couldn't quit looking at him . might be a good spot for a trail cam. What is it?

hello - my question is whats the second animal in the picture - - looks like a coti tail or bobcat leg - it can be seen over the animals back (secondpic) fairly large in first pic and can still see the top in second pic- right next to the tree ! Gary

    WTB- Outdorrsmans tripod

hello - having a spare or several- is a good idea - i always pick up used tri-pods at yard sales-estate sales all the time - some inexpensive, some rather exspensive if bought new - used $5 - CRAZY - I got one place i like to scout- i call tri-pod hill -seems every trip , i loose a piece of my tri-pod . check local pawn shops but make sure they have the release plates- $2 tripod worth nothing if you gotta spend $20 to get a release plate for it . check craigslist - usually a few for less than $20 -- Gary

Looking for a new Bow Site

hello - lots of great sights out there- never thought id fork over 100+ dollars for a sight but i did ! I was at cabelas - i like the idea of holding a sight at arms length to see how the pins look to me ! all the sights are mounted on individual grips so it's easy to see the exact view like holding a bow- - everyones eye sight is different - i'm a glasses guy who cant see distance so 3 out of 4 sights i couldn't get a clear picture of the pins , some times the colors just blurred - kinda irratating to say the least - i settled for the vital gear tri-angle sight - all three pins are the glow green -rare- kindalike seeing the green traffic light at night - man are the bright - i l love it ! - i guess what i'm trying to say is holding the variety of sights they had avialable was the deciding factor - Gary
