  1. hello -

did a little investigating on broadheads- very interesting- I'll start a new post but heres what i found out about the undertaker --testing penatration

(expandable heads) This was a little tougher because not all Mech. Heads are made the same. The tip was all I was trying to test but in some cases, the over center blades would contact the material while the point was still making it's way through. Over center blades proved to be a challenge. I think my speed at which I was forcing the heads through the material was a bit slow for these heads to be truly appreciated.

Piston Point/undertaker. This head did not open either and the peak force moment for the tip was 3.4 Lbs. and the peak force moment of the unopen blades passing through was 14 Lbs.

I'll start a post on the broadhead comparision

  2. hello -:( - Adam,Adam,Adam-- Hope Ross will let you have the day off to follow up on this situation! I tend to agree with Jim- Even if it looked perfect , the room for error can be just inches! Unless you hit vitals it's never a pretty picture and thats what I'm imagining! Good luck - Hope you marked the blood line and the last spot and don't give up yet! Redman makes a good point also - angle, distance ,the broadhead may not have opened correctly- Gary

  3. hello - from my limited experience on tracking a poor hit animal - They generally travel the easiest route - You say the blood you found today was 100 yrds long - Were you up on the hill side - headed down etc. Get a mental picture , which looks like the easiest way down ! Most injured animals will head down- hill and like a previous post, they will head for water ! You didn't say if the blood you found today was old or fairly fresh - Follow any game trails you may come accross! He may still be alive, I've seen a gut shot buck last for a week -If you didn't hit a vital -heart, lung , nothing says this buck won't survive a few more days ! Get more help - you may be thinking I don't want to give away my secret spot - Sounds like help is here and available - your option - Another day and all you may get is the rack ! if your real lucky. The more eyes and manpower you get the better your chances ! It's your choice --- Gary

  4. hello - - Welcome to the wide world of Coues deer hunting! Everyone here could come up with different answers to your questions. You didn't do anything wrong ! That's why they call it hunting. It's never gonna be an easy or sure thing no matter how many books you read or advise you get from others!

Nothing wrong with asking for help! To be truthful every trip is different. All the things you asked about can and do change deer patterns and habits! I don't think there is any perfect answers! The best advise I can give you-. Take the time to look at your hunt and what you learned from it and don't get discouraged. You were hunting in a new area , hunting a deer you never hunted before and were seeing deer. That's a great accomplishment!

The main thing is enjoy the experience and be glad you could share it with your son! It shouldn't take too many trips to actaully tag your first Coues deer .

Good luck in the future! I hope you stick with it! Gary

  5. hello - <_< See how easy it is to jump to conclusions , when we don't have the whole story - My last trip to the res. was to hunt yotes in feb. , up by point of pines- we seen some really nice bucks! one that was a 100 class fer sure!

And definatley know or ask about hunting /fishing regulations and policies before going on a Reservation trip . especially if you have never been there before- Thats good advise -Amanda !!

Make good use of the time you got left and fill that tag - Good Luck -- Gary

  6. hello - B)

you kinda answered your own question -- you have seen deer and found sheds- -That" s your spot ! Now spend the time to find the deer . Most of the dedicated Coues hunters will sit and glass for days. Looking at he same general area , that we know hold deer. The Coues bucks natural instincts and color makes them one of the hardest to locate. Purchase pair of QUALITY binoculars and forget the 10x -12 x and get a 15x > I've been with friends who own and use the best and they continually are trying to point out where the deer are to me .

If your hunting unit 21 - some goods spots around MT.Ord -even the 4 peaks area - I would even concider boating accross bartlett lake and hunt the foothills.

As far as 23 - Anywhere around the town of Young- and It's fairly easy to find them from PunkinCenter all the way down to Tortilla Flats on the north side of Roosevelt!

The Best advise it to get out and look around - Go to the G$F information on each unit - these guys give you some of the best spots to start in any unit in the state !! for any species !

    Gary

  7. hello -

    B) - Not real suprised that the guy removed the post - a few members were a bit hard on him.

He was basically surprised at the comments- some almost rude - and decided that this website was not as freindly as he'd been told and basically stated he'd not return!

If someone post information that seems wrong to you - get over it! Everyone of us is different. Take the time to ask a few questions , before jumping to conclusions - I've been guilty of this myself . Once the whole story was told. It wasn't a big deal!

All of us aren't so online proficiet with writing articles or trying to convey a story -

I for one had hoped he'd leave it ! Even now this forum on ethic's doesn't really tell the whole story as it was explained the second time in more detail by the writer ! Oh well ! It's easy to take things out of the context ! Even harder to repeat a story accurately!

Is it unethical to take 500-600 + yrd shots - not if one has the proper equipment- and is profient/confident enough to make a clean kill - he stated he was and had several kills at this range ! He had the proper eqipment and had practiced regularly.

Yes , he missed and was sick to have found some blood and not a downed animals - he and freinds spent days combing the area looking for any sign to follow that indicated he had a serious wounded or dead animal , none was found!

Should he continue to hunt - I wouldn't give up looking yet - He also stated he planned to return and see if he had a second chance at this animal - most deer return after a few days even if slightly ingured. Most bucks have a core area and return no matter what!

To end a hunt under these circumstances . NOWAY -To say he has an animal that has died somewhere is not entirely correct in my opinion ! The right thing was to make every effort to recover or find out what happened to that buck - He tried his best, that being done- hunts on agin!

It' is getting more important for us as hunters to fill out the harvest quota card! This is an important tool for G$F to record accurate information, and not just speculation ! If he's still lucky enoughto tag a buck - yesto tagging a deer and yes to wounding a deer because blood was found !

    Gary

  8. hello - Anytime your gear gets stolen it's a bummer. It not only spoils the adventure but can get quite expensive! I think the idea of setting up a second cam to take pictures of posible theives is a good idea! ID'n these people may prove to be a problem but maybe a special - have you seen this guy post might do it !

I think the new cams Amanda mentioned and how she likes to hide them is a great idea!

I regularly see cameras bolted to trees, especially before elk season .Just about every water hole had 1-2. Most were easy to find. Saw a few in the metal lock boxes.

I have a close friend who actually had thieves steal the memory cards out of the cameras -less expensive but still a bummer!

Good luck in the future ! Gary

  9. hello - Don't forget the information you'll unknowing give out - I was able to take a nice coues buck - official scored 119 1/2- takin out if unit "21"- I had it scored - Mike Cupel- they ask- what unit it was killed in! To my amasement, for the next several years ,we had hunters all over the place ! we go back a few yrs. later nobody. Now I never gave out the exact location of my "honeyhole" but somehow it seemed like it got out ! If you look in the record book - even giving the mt. range can narrow the spot down.

Most hunting units are huge but really only a few spots hold any decent number of places the deer hang -out. I usually tell them every unit has a trophy buck, some more than others. But will I give the correct information - DUH Let them wonder ! If they are dumb enough to think it is correct , then I'll have a lot less hunters to worry about next yr. Maybe they will actually be hunting next to your spot -by accident !

Let'm ask - they won't be bothering me next yr. Gary

  10. -----hello - heres some nra news -information we all need to know - nra members or not !! -Don't think for a minute we don't need someone looking out for our rights and willing to take a stand to defend them !! --**** Alert *** Alert *** Alert ****

    Dear Fellow NRA Member,

In the next few days, you'll receive your new NRA membership card.

The moment you receive it, I urge you to validate your new membership card as soon as possible. More than ever, we need you to stand with NRA and fight to save our Second Amendment freedoms.

    Because Barack Obama's campaign promise

not to take away our guns is a lie.

He's not even in office, yet he's fired the opening salvos in a war against the future of the Second Amendment, our hunting and shooting traditions, and YOU.

Obama's FIRST attack on YOU: Appointing Illinois Congressman Rahm Emanuel to be White House Chief of Staff. In Congress, Emanuel earned an "F" rating from NRA, and while working in the Clinton Administration, he was known as the "point man on gun control." He is an avowed enemy of the Second Amendment and will wield enormous power in the battle for the future of our firearm freedoms.

Obama's SECOND attack on YOU: If Hillary Clinton is confirmed as Secretary of State, she'll rip the Second Amendment right out of the Bill of Rights. She'll be our nation's top diplomat with the power to determine whether the United Nations will pass, and Obama will sign, a global gun ban treaty that will surrender our Second Amendment rights and our national sovereignty.

Obama's THIRD attack on YOU: Nominating ex-Senator and former Majority Leader Tom Daschle-an avowed enemy of NRA-to be Secretary of Health and Human Services. NRA was responsible for defeating Daschle when he ran in South Dakota for re-election to the Senate. If Daschle is confirmed, he could hold the ultimate power to declare guns a "public health menace" and regulate away our essential liberties.

Obama's FOURTH attack on YOU: Nominating Eric Holder to be Attorney General. As former Assistant Attorney General, Holder was a key architect and vocal advocate for the Clinton era's sweeping gun ban agenda. He supported national handgun licensing, mandatory trigger locks, and ending gun shows as we know them.

Just recently, Holder opposed the District of Columbia's Heller decision that declared the Second Amendment an individual right. Holder also called for reviving the Clinton gun bans and, as Attorney General, would fight in court to prevent the landmark Heller decision from being made applicable to state and local governments.

Worst of all, if Holder is confirmed as the nation's top law-enforcement officer, he would control BATFE and wield enormous power to harass gun owners and sue America's arms makers out of existence.

Obama's FIFTH attack on YOU: In the job application for the Obama Administration, he made it clear that gun owners are second-class citizens and told 80 million gun owners not to even bother applying for a job. In the "White House Personnel Data Questionnaire" he asked:

"Do you or any members of your immediate family own a gun? If so, provide

complete ownership and registration information. Has the registration ever

lapsed? Please also describe how and by whom it is used and whether it has

been the cause of any personal injuries or property damage."

This chilling notice to gun owners-that they are not welcome to serve in his Administration-shows the deep hostility for Americans' Second Amendment Freedoms that Obama and his Administration have in their hearts.

On its face, that question endorses gun registration-a mandate in only five states in our nation-and buys into the anti-gun premise that firearms are inherently dangerous and gun owners are prone to misusing them.

That's an outrageous mindset, especially for the President-elect whose sworn duty will be to uphold the U.S. Constitution, including our right to keep and bear arms.

Obama CLEARLY wants to make gun registration the law of the land.

First for employees under his control...AND THEN FOR YOU.

Working with a Congress dominated by gun haters like Nancy Pelosi, Dianne Feinstein, John Conyers, Henry Waxman, and Charles Schumer!!!

Rubbing salt in gun owner wounds is the Brady Campaign, which just issued a completely bogus poll claiming that two-thirds of the Americans-including 60% of all gun owners-favor gun registration, licensing of firearm owners, and other sweeping restrictions on our firearm freedoms!

Add it all up and you have the potential

for a Second Amendment disaster that's unlike

any other NRA members have ever battled.

That's why we need the strongest possible commitment from EVERY NRA member, starting today. That's why I'm hoping you'll validate your new NRA membership card the moment you receive it.

Because our greatest strength is you.

Only by working with you can NRA hold the line against these threats from every quarter. We are the one force that has the strength to keep Americans free and our rights intact for future generations. With you at our side, we will fight and we will prevail against all odds.

Thank you for your loyalty to NRA and the cause of Freedom.
