RL26 has a temp coating so that shouldn't be an issue. Sounds like you may too close to rifling. Try seating a little deeper. What weight bullet? RL26 has temp coating but it's a tad faster than H1000. About two grains less than H1000

The OP is talking about a SAMMI cartridge in a factory rifle. So obviously talking virgin brass? Do you fireform virgin brass in a SAMMI chamber before starting load development?

So you don't fireform brass first? I for one am not waiting for a fouled barrel to show up right in the middle of a hunt or match whether it's 40 shots or 50 shots?

It's simple take the 30/06 box from your Tikka and measure the inside of the box minus .020". This will be the max length you can load in that box. Get a sample 280 AI cartridge made up with your favorite bullet that will fit the box and send that sample to your gunsmith so he can cut the proper chamber to fit. Or you can send that sample to a reamer company like JGS and have them make a reamer to the specs of that sample. Understand that the 280 AI is based on the 30/06 case so it should work perfectly!

MEC 600 JR is a simple way to go. You can do 2 3/4" or 3". It's a single stage press where you move the empty from station to station by hand. You can add an auto primer feed which makes reloading even simpler. Changing from 2 3/4" to 3" is a matter of adjusting the main tower stem by pulling a screw and inserting it into a different slot. Current price about $250.

When you take the heads off you will need to remove intake and exhaust manifolds so gaskets for those is part of a head replacement or milling job. A good shop can help decide which way to go. About the only other way water is going to get into oil is through a cracked block.

You don't need a long block, just two heads and gaskets! Maybe just two head gaskets and get the heads milled down, if you're lucky.
