    Mexico 2014

Here are some photos of our most recent annual jaunt to Sonora this year for Coues deer. The weather was warm and the moon was big which is not a good combination for hunting deer. Our group was still able to harvest some nice bucks. Our leases were pretty dry this year with deer numbers down quite a bit. Even with the tough hunting conditions everyone had a great time. We even had 12 Goulds's gobblers walk across the road in front of us one evening. Thanks to Bob D. for the great cooking and to Pat H., Hunter H., Houston D., Rob M., Richard K., Tim R., Earl L, Bill G. and Cole G. for he good times. View the full article
  4. Here is a great mule deer that Ryan D. harvested last archery season in the southwest Arizona desert. He took some neat photos of the buck prior to harvesting him. Ryan has also taken some great desert bucks with his rifle. Thanks Ryan for letting me mount your buck for you. View the full article

The mule deer is an Arizona buck taken by Chris A. and scores over the 200" mark. Chris's great buck has a little of everything, width, mass, length and some extras for character. Thanks Chris for letting me do the work on your buck. View the full article
  9. I have recently updated my website www.mogollontaxidermy.com to better work on tablets and phones as well as computers. The contact page has a map to find our studio that can be viewed on a phone. This makes it easier for those who haven't been here before to find us. I will now be able to update photos on the site more often. I have a few little tweaks to make here and there but it is almost finished. Let me know what you think. View the full article

    Alaska Caribou

We returned from our Alaska caribou drop hunt a couple of weeks ago and I am finally getting some photos posted. I went with my father, father-in-law, Houston Davis, Mike Dewees, and Mike McCleery. We ended up waiting three days in Kotzebue before flying out into the field because most of the caribou were in a restricted area where planes can't land. We were finally flown out and after two days in the field with no caribou our pilot picked us up and moved us to an area where we were able to get into them with only a couple of days left. It was pretty cold, especially leaving September weather in Arizona and going to that. One morning we had about 5 degrees! It was a great experience and one I hope to do again in the future. We flew with Golden Eagle Outfitters who is an air taxi service out of Kotzebue and Delta Junction. They worked hard to get us in front of the caribou and most of all they were honest. I would highly recommend them to anyone needing a flying service out of Kotzebue. caribou skull and antlers buried in the sand Grizzly 250 yards from camp My dad trying to stay warm My father-in-law Earl Houston Davis Me with my bull View the full article
  11. Here is a great buck that Hunter Haynes took a couple of days ago. Hunter glassed this buck up bedded and snuck into 60 yards and had to wait him out for three hours. The buck finally got out of his bed and hunter made the shot count. View the full article

  13. Here are some photos of Craig H.'s hunt last fall in Northwest Territories. Craig spent 21 days on the hunt and saw a lot of good animals. He passed on this caribou and then after looking at the photos of it that night he decided he had made a mistake. He was able to relocate the bull about 4 miles away the next morning and harvested him. He also took a nice moose and Dall sheep. I have included some photos of his Dall and Caribou mounts I did. He put his moose up in European mount. View the full article

    Velvet Antlers

Bugs aren't normally attracted to tanned skins, only raw flesh which can be from improperly cleaned skull caps (or not cleaned at all), as well as horns and horn cores. If bugs are drawn to a dirty skull or cap they can then do damage to the tanned skin on a mount also. Back in the day taxidermists used arsenic as a bug repellant which was very effective at keeping bugs away, but it was also tended to shorten the lifespan of the taxidermist by quite a bit. After its use was discontinued along came a pesticide known as Edolan-U which was almost as good, but it was a carcinogen and has since been outlawed. Borax is not as effective as the other two, but it won't kill you either so sprinkling it on your velvet once a year is harmless. There is a company that now is making some natural insect repellants for the taxidermy industry. I have not used any of their products but they claim they work well and have a product you can mist on your velvet once a year to keep bugs away. Their website is www.mountmedix.com .
  15. Here is a great desert ram taken last year by Ernie Meeske. Ernie has been applying for many years to draw this tag and he made the most of it. He made several scouting trips and looked at several super rams. Ernie had his son Seth, son-in-law Jeremy, and friends Jay Scott, Jack Johnson Jr., Jack Johnson Sr. and some others along to help. You can see a video of the kill at Jayscottoutdoors. Ernie watched the ram for several hours until he moved into a position for a shot. He was afraid the ram would go over a cliff into the lake. It did end up going over a cliff, but due to waiting him out, it didn't end up in the water (It did end up in a cactus patch). Enjoy the photos of Ernie's sheep mount. Click on the photos to enlarge. 16. Here is a nice buck killed by Susi E. last year in central AZ. This was Susi's first buck and it is a great mule deer for this part of the state. Also, the little javelina was from a herd at the Tonto Natural Bridge State Park and it ended up dying on the grounds there. The staff wanted to display it in the visitor's center, so we mounted it and donated it to them. There are no forms made for a javelina this small, so using the carcass as reference we carved a form specifically for the little pig. View the full article
  17. Here is an inland Alaska Grizzly bear from north of the Arctic Circle that we recently finished. The bear and one of the Dall sheep were taken by Brian R. and the other Dall was taken by his brother Chad R. Brian and Chad have a brother who lives in Alaska so they get some great opportunities to hunt up there. Brian has a Brown bear hunt planned for this fall and it sounds like an insane adventure. Stay tuned and hopefully we will have some good photos of that hunt later on. View the full article
  18. Here are a couple of photos of Larry Spiller's desert sheep he harvested last fall. Larry was the lucky winner of the Arizona Big Game Super Raffle desert sheep tag. He hunted with Colburn and Scott Outfitters and took his Nelsoni ram in one of the units along the Colorado River. This ram has unusual coloring on his face and forehead with all the whiteness. 19. I apologize for not posting lately. I have been extra busy in the shop getting work finished for my customers. Here are a few photos of recently finished pieces. The big long tined coues buck is Bill Bone's buck that we posted the field photos of when he harvested it last fall. It officially grosses 121 2/8 and nets 120 1/8. The photo with the two coues bucks together belong to Cody Nelson of the Outdoorsmans His story will be featured soon in an upcoming issue of Western Hunter Magazine. The velvet mule deer was taken by Houston Davis on a Utah archery hunt last fall. It looks like rain on the Rim today; Come on monsoons! View the full article
  20. Here is a Safari we just finished up for Jim C. This was Jim's second trip to Africa and he has been a third time since we received this group of trophies. I hope everyone has a good Memorial Day and remember to honor those who have served and those who have given the ultimate sacrifice so that we can live under the freedom that they have provided us. God Bless them! View the full article
  21. We just finished up mounting Nanook, the Arizona auction ram from 2012. Gus A. was the lucky bidder for the tag last year and harvested this awesome ram with Goef Moss and the Littlehorn Outfitters crew. Nanook officially scores 185 1/8 Boone and Crockett and was aged at 10 years. Arizona produced some great rams again last year and we will be mounting some of them at Mogollon Taxidermy. I will post photos of these rams in the coming months as I get them finished. View the full article
  22. Here is a photo of Randy D> with his Houserock buff from a couple of weeks ago. This is what Randy had to say: After accumulating 15 bonus points, (unsuccessful attempts) to draw an AZ buffalo tag on the Kaibab plateau, I finally got drawn and was fortunate enough to harvest this nice bull to fill my once in a lifetime limit for AZ. We celebrated Preston's 16th birthday in buffalo camp and it was extra special treat for him to be there. I had underestimated how challenging and difficult buffalo hunting on the Kaibab was. It was definitely allot of work from start to finish, (allot of snow, lots of miles hiking, and allot of animal on the ground) and we were thankful to have the assistance of Russ and Jacob Jacoby, Arlis Miller, Kevin Presmyk, and Dean Dunaway. It was great making new friends and they definitely made for a wonderful experience on this once in a lifetime opportunity. I'm not exactly sure what he scores, but there is a chance he may make the B&C 115 minimum. We'll see where he lands after 60 days. Regardless, I am extremely thankful and happy with this trophy. Congratulations on a great buffalo Randy! View the full article
  23. Here is a great buck with long tines and eyeguards to match. I just finished this half lifesize coues deer as well as the half lifesize black bear and they are on the way to their new homes.
