  1. Not sure where to post this and because we will be Bow hunting this season it's here in the bow hunting forum. My question to all is this, any Ideas for meals to pack that are easy to serve when in the field. Meals that dont require anything more than heating on a fire and serving? Easy cleanup and can last for 7 to 10 days in an ice chest? I want to focus on hunting and dont want to worry a lot about what to fix for supper. Breakfast is null and lunch is packed in a backback for each day. Only suppers are in question. I thank you in advance for your input.

    Unit 8 success!

We harvested 2 out of 3 cows this year. It was a great hunt with much miles covered. I think Mulie Hunter posted the pics already in another post. What I wanted to say is that we had 1 game camera stolen and another turned off and spun around on its mount. From now on we will place 2 cams so maybe we catch the jerk and post thier pics here on this site.
  3. I know labor day weekend is probally the worst time to be scouting. There were a TON of dirt bikes, quads, and APV's. But over all we had a good time. We took the time to just move around the northern half of the unit an explore some areas that looked promissing on the Topo map. Met some great people who were more than willing to share thier history hunting the unit, which we were very greatful for. Big thanks to Bob and his wife Diane for sharing thier knowledge with us.!! I do have a question; The Elk in Morman lake, do they just stay out there? We ran into some guys that were telling us they have watched people trying to belly crawl in for a shot and had a great laugh! I bet that would be hilarious to see. Anyway they are awesome to watch, just wish I had better optics to really see good.

    Coconino County Elk Hunters

This is a huge problem no doubt, maybe some guys dont want to have to tow thier trailers up from the valley more than once during scouting/hunting. However then they should leave it at a storage place like most people do, just pay the 40 bucks to have a secure place to store it. It is annoying to say the least that camp sites are "Claimed" by these who leave thier trailers/tents set-up and leave to go home. The same problem exist on watertanks where people place thier stands or blinds and think they "Own " that spot because thier stuff is there. One year in 7west we were elk hunting, went up 2 days early to find a tent in the spot we came up early to camp at. The only thing there was the 2 man dome tent. I suspected they left it to claim the spot, so I looked inside the tent and sure enough there was a rock in the middle of the tent to hold it there. So we just left the tent and setup our camp anyway. The next day the owner showed up, he began to remove his tent. I went up to him, introduced myself and told him he was welcome to camp with us. Of course he did not want to do that.... So my advice is this, If you find a spot you like. And nobody is actually camping, then just go ahead and camp there. If they show up, welcome them to stay. If they become angry, go ahead and call the sherrif/forest service. Public Land is PUBLIC LAND, we all pay our taxes to have use of the land. It is UNETHICAL to "Claim" some spot that belongs to us all, weather it be a camp spot or a watertank. --just my two cents--

    Archery cow VRS Archery Bull

Finally got a tag from game and fish after all that credit card hoopla, man what a wild ride that was. Anyway, we ended up with second choice archery cow, which is fine with me. I am estatic about being in the woods chasing Elk!! Just wondering if anyone could offer any tips as to the best approch to getting a shot at a cow during this time of year, they seem to be in groups and would be difficult to stalk close enough for a shot. Maybe sit water/salt lick? What say you?

    Archery cow VRS Archery Bull

http://forums.coueswhitetail.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=32275 This link shows the history of the last draw cycle, game and fish and thier contractor somehow between them the expiration date on our card was changed by 1 month, therefore the back rejected it. However when we called g and f, they had the correct info on file. They made it right and we have our tags, but man it was rough on the emotions going for the ride.

Credit card Issue in draw equals no Elk tag!

Finally!! we are going ELK hunting!!, After all the headaches and turmoil, we will be able to get a tag this year. The letter came yesterday from Game and Fish, we were included in the credit card fraud dibacle... Any way I cant wait to get into the woods and start scouting!! What an awfully tormenting emotional roller coster ride, but it was worth the fight. It is a Unit 8 cow elk archery tag, our second choice, but it dont matter to me, I am thrilled to be in the woods with my PSE bow madness chasing ELK!! ya baby!! Thanks be to the Lord Jesus, He owns the cattle on a thousand hills!! and all the potatos under it!!

    Early vrs Late Season Hunting

I would like to pose a question to my fellow hunters. Question: What are the advantages/disadvantages to early season and late season Elk Hunting This would be Archery related as to difficulty of hunt, stratagey, scouting methods I now the rut is the primary advantage to early season, What say You??

    Change of the Rules

Have an idea and want some input from fellow hunters. Lets say you are successful in drawing a tag for a big game animal, what if the rule was that the next year you had to sit out the draw and the following year you could resume applying again. Just a thought, but perhaps it would help level the field a bit. I know some who have been drawn several years in a row, and others who have 5, 10 and more points with no luck drawing. Maybe call it the "get one, sit one" rule. What do you guys/gals think?

Credit Card Dishonored for no reason

I was with "MulieHunter" on the app and as soon as we know what the bank has to say we will post it here, my guess is the bank did this and AZGFD will not care one way or the other, we are just out of luck. Anyway, good luke to all that drew tags, have fun and share your pics and stories when you get back! signed, very disappointed..........
  20. Last year was my first trip to the bab, and what a great time we had. A little afternoon rain and a good chill in the morning! thats the best kind of weather for me. Saw lots of deer and mostly small bucks ( which is fine for me) Also later in the week saw a group of very large bucks traviling together. Big boys and were very impressive. I never did get close to those. The second day I missed a 30 yard shot at a spike, missjudged the yardage and the arrow passed right over his back and slammed into a tree! It's a very distinctive sound when your arrow hits a tree! Needless to saw I was depressed a little for such a boneheaded shot! Anyway it would be 7 days before the next oppurtunity presented itself, a 40 yard shot that passed through both lungs and out the other side with my 12 year old martin impala bow. After the shot I thought I had missed again, not chasing the animal I let him run and waited till he was out of site. Walking the distance to the shot location it was indeed 40 yards and I felt great when I spotted my arrow covered in blood! Remembering to not pursue the deer I went back to camp and found my buddies still not back from the morning hunt. So I waited about 30 min and on my way back to the kill site I was stopped by a camp just down the road from ours and spoke with the gentelmen there. Telling my story they offered to help and suggested we wait a little longer. About an hour later they helped me begin my search and we found some blood, (although not much) it gave clues to the direction the deer had left the area. An hour went by and no luck, these guys were packed to leave and wished me luck. Checking camp and no help yet I went over to another road where some hunters were we had fellowshipped with the days before they came over to help search. It began to rain a little which did not help the blood situation at all. They were exicted to help, but we had no more luck. Meanwhile my buddie came by and joined in the search. No luck still! He left for home and I was left alone to search. The other guys I was with were searching for our fellow hunter who was turned around in the woods a few miles north of me.(although I was not aware of that till much later) By myself and not sure what to do, I began to ask the Lord to help me find this deer as I did not want to waste my kill and leave it for predetors. Walking over the trail again I went to the bottom of the little drainage and felt I should go up the other side and walk down about 100 yards and the then cross over and back along other side. So I did, about an hour later I was making my way through some thick stuff and much to my suprise The deer jumped up about 25 yards right in front of me. I was stunned and instanlty froze in my boots! He did not run but hobbled a few steps and just stood there staring at me. The trees were thick and I could only see his horns and his rear quarters. I thought I should just wait for him to lay down and die so I just stood there and so did he. It must have seemed like 45 min or longer. Many thoughts running through my mind I decided the best thing to do was take another shot with a mecanical to get through the sticks. I could see a clear shot to his hide quarters so I took the shot and it hit him solid and he broke the arrow in half. He bolted and I thought I lost him again. Making my way to look for him I could hear him breathing, but the little draw I was in the sound bounces around and I could not pin point his location. Finally I turned around and walked about 50 yards and caught site of him laying down, going over to him just as he let out his last breath. The rest of the story is me gutting him there and getting him back to camp, up in a tree and skinned and quartered into a large ice chest. He my not be a big fellow, but to me this was an adventure I will never forget. I hope you enjoy the story, add I just want to say that hunters are are some of the greatest people you will ever meet. Solid folks who are more than willing to help. My buddie who was lost? every hunter in a five mile radius stopped what they were doing and helped look for him, and continued until he was found.

    Last Year on the Bab!

Yeah it sure was if you look at the lung/heart you can see where the cuts to the lungs are, the top of the heart also was sliced a little.

    Easy Meals while camping?

Wow what a great community of hunting nuts like me! Thanks you all for the input, these ideas will go great with the stuff we had planned. I was very lucky to draw a Kiabab deer and a Bull Elk for 7west this year. I have saved ALL my vacation time for these 2 hunts. I want to make the best of it as I may not get drawn again for a long time. One thing is new this year is I had to get a sticker for my quad which cost me 25 bucks! (One more way the GOV is transfering my money to thier account) Anyway thanks again for all the input. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ "The man who never makes a mistake, is the man who never does anything!"
