Very nice buck, congratulations and thanks for sharing! If you don't mind- I read it as the goat was just sitting there watching you as you let down and redialed the slider? Did he move around at all through the process or did he pretty much just wait for the arrow?

anyone interested in Adele tickets for tonight?
CouesPursuit replied to levers's topic in Classified Ads
There is a reason they didn't last long, even on a hunting site. If I saw the ad quick enough I know I would have considered buying them. I've been fishing, shooting and scouting nearly every weekend for the last several months. It's now the middle of August, the start of archery deer, immediately leading into September AZ dove and WY antelope, helping on October deer rifle hunts, with more rifle deer into November and then waterfowl will be starting to show up, then lots more archery deer and waterfowl through December and January. I would definitely buy those tickets for my wife and a friend of her choice, sounds like a great gift that she dang well deserves for putting up with me for the things I like, and the ridiculous amounts of money I spend on it. "And honey, where did I come up with these last minute Adele tickets for you? The hunting community I am proud to be a part of!" Glad the OP got 'em sold so quick!! -
The People's Sock. I wear one pair in all conditions including January snow with uninsulated boots. The best. Made in the USA. https://www.amazon.com/s?ie=UTF8&field-brandtextbin=People%20Socks&page=1&rh=n%3A7141123011

I have literally hundreds of pictures of these 2 bulls in the first few days after setting it up higher in the tree. They taunted me for a few days and then knocked it off the tree completely. Dang bulls! Left the salt, pulled the camera before their testosterone kicked in for the rut.

I bought a Harris 25HBCS after several years of thinking bipods weren't practical enough to encompass all shooting situations. The 25HBCS has been awesome, TJ! I've owned the rifle for 3 weeks and have killed 6 coyotes with it in both prone and sitting positions. It hasn't left me without a shot. I will be taking it off the .223 and putting it on my 7mm for my WY antelope hunt with confidence.

I will forward to my brother if you would ship to Mesa?

223 Reloading for Hunting/Accuracy (Updated with success)
CouesPursuit replied to CouesPursuit's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Thanks for pointing that out, that was a mistype indeed. I edited the post to reflect that. I'm getting near identical group sizes with 23.5-24.5 gr of H335 on the 53 gr VMax. Also, had a chance to test my 65 SGK today at the range. I'd say I found a load. 65gr Sierra Game King 23.5gr H4895 0.01 Jump @ 2.22" COAL I couldn't be happier with this $300 rifle! -
223 Reloading for Hunting/Accuracy (Updated with success)
CouesPursuit posted a topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Already having a decent scope laying around combined with a $50 rebate, I bought a savage axis heavy barrel chambered in .223 for all around purposes. It was too appealing to have a rifle for the price that is affordable and enjoyable to shoot, but also something that can destroy coyotes at longer ranges, be at least slightly useful in a SHTF situation, and possibly supplement itself as a Javelina rifle for a family member in the future. After a proper 50 shot break in with quality Hornady 55gr FMJ, I'm ready to reload with once fired brass and some H335 I have been using for reloading the AR. I've researched past discussions but would like to reach out and get advice from some 223 reloaders on bullet selection. I'm looking for a bullet to develop on that has the best combination of accuracy and effectiveness on coyotes, javelina, and maybe even a Wyoming Antelope fawn. Rifle has a 1 and 9 twist and a 22" barrel. My selection was down to- 1. 65 gr. Sierra GameKing BT 2. 70 gr. Speer Semi Spitzer The 60 gr. Nosler Partition was up there but they are boxes of 50 and end up being twice the price. Any insight on these bullets on game and accuracy or alternative recommendations? Thank you! -
223 Reloading for Hunting/Accuracy (Updated with success)

Still working up my 65gr SGK but I have my coyote load dialed in. 53gr VMax 24.0gr H335 0.01 Jump @ 2.22" COAL 3/3 today from 50-225 yards, all yotes DRT. -
Pm me if you'd like. I'd be happy to get you started.

As I'm prepping and reloading ~100 once fired cases in my new 223 Savage Axis HB, I've noticed small but very consistent denting about 1/4" below the shoulder on the majority of the brass. This seems to be from extraction and is apparent before resizing ( just neck-sizing anyway). The chamber looks smooth and clean of any debris. I understand these aren't an issue as far as pressure or accuracy, but what about case life? I noticed this buildup, thoughts? Not sure sure if it is coming from chambering FMJs or case extraction. Thank you.

Excellent!! It's awesome seeing them at a slab size already.

Very nice quote there - I was pretty emotional after shooting my first coues with a bow, definitely based on "the magnitude of the effort extended in its pursuit." He wasn't huge (avatar), but it will be very tough to top him as far a trophy is concerned. I first read A Sand County Almanac as a requirement in school, and 3 times since on long flights across the pond. Just read it again last month. When my wife gets on me a bit for wanting to spend so much of the fall/winter chasing bucks and ducks, I quote.. “There are some who can live without wild things and some who cannot,” and remind her that she knew what she was getting into. She then rolls her eyes and I try to do something nice for her to ease the tension.

Also a big fan of Teddy and Aldo's quotes, here are a couple short ones I like. "Nothing clears a troubled mind like shooting a bow." - Fred Bear "The hunting partnership between man and dog developed thousands of years ago and from it came a deep bond of affection. I suspect it was the dog's idea." - Aaron Fraser

I agree with this, especially for bigger bulls. I wasted my last late archery sitting a stand that had bulls every day through the end of October. I thought I would play the odds and sit for 5 straight, all day everyday. When I finally had enough, I moved to spot and stalk country and was in bulls both of the only 2 days I had left to hunt. There are a couple exceptions of course but most of the November bulls I've seen were > 3/4 mile from a road.

Dented Brass on Extraction
CouesPursuit replied to CouesPursuit's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Numbskull over here, it's the Hornady FMJs themselves, I checked last night but obviously not well enough. They are also a touch long rubbing on the ramp, luckily I won't need to shoot them anymore. Thanks for the replies and hopefully Viper got something out of it! -
Which county? A phone number may be tough but most of the counties have interactive maps to their assessors office and parcel owner names with an address.
-
Yup, it's even worse when you let your buddies check a camera on an archery deer hunt you're already tagged out for and you show up to your camera facing down in the dirt 3 months later on the start of your late archery bull hunt! Then when you decide to not hunt that spot because you didn't know what was hitting it, and you see this guy after the camera was only reset for 3 days, during the hunt! lol

Dang Javelina are everywhere!! Nice pics!

Great stories above and I'm sure there are many to come. I don't know for me they just keep getting better and better. From the long shot of my first rifle coues and short shot (6 yards) of my first archery coues, my best hunting buddy and I shooting a coues and mulie in the snow 30 minutes and 1 mile apart, to my brother's first coues and elk last year - I do know I can't wait to have kids and share it with them, then I'm sure I'll start getting favorites!

Please forgive my lack of knowledge here. In my 7mm with 168 gr LRABs, my seating depth test produced a throat OAL of 3.42" to the lands, which is .13" > SAAMI. I bought a new .223 and performed the same depth test with a 65 gr SGK, which reveals a 2.25" throat length, which is .01 < SAAMI. Am I wrong in assuming the chamber throat should be equal to or exceed SAAMI specs? At this point I would probably load 2.25" OAL and shoot. Thoughts on the 0.01 variation? Thank you.

Throat Length Question
CouesPursuit replied to CouesPursuit's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I'm chambering an unsized cartridge marked with a sharpie on the SGK. Didn't need the sharpie as the bolt smoothly closed and ejected the cartridge with seated bullet five times and came up with- 2.26 2.25 2.25 2.26 2.25 -

Got it! CBTO most likely covers this more effectively?
