Scary scam right there. Similar to the rut, it's the time of year to outsmart a hunter. Good on you for sharing it, thanks, I'll be passing it on.

My FIL gave me his Stihl 025 with a 14" bar that he purchased in '92. Ran perfect then, still purrfect now. It's definitely on the smallest end of chainsaws, but for my hunting/camping/Christmas tree cutting purposes at 12-15x/year, it's a lean mean cutting machine. Husqvarna is great as stated and that saw in the classifieds appears to be a good deal. Maintenance is key.

I am currently using a few different Merino wool base layers and UA Cold Gear tops coupled with bibs and/or coveralls. I am a firm believer in bibs/coveralls for hunting in regards to warmth, scent control and being able to draw my bow properly.

Today at work I stumbled across a better than average map series that explains a lot of America's history and thought I'd share. From source @ http://www.vox.com/2015/2/17/7917165/maps-that-explain-america Here are a few that stood out to me, for better or worse.. Hope you enjoy a few, follow the link above for 67 more.

My wife and I just celebrated our 1st wedding anniversary this weekend and after the third time this topic came up in the last few weeks, I consider it official. She told me to "make it a big year" hunting wise. If all goes to plan, I won't have the resources to go on any big hunts for a few years. When I say big, I mean out of state and 10 days long. This will be my first "big" trip in that regard. I prefer to: - Hunt deer in a neighboring state, or within reasonable driving distance - Go 100% DIY, no guided hunts are desired at this time - Keep tags/license fees under $500, but open to options My first considerations are Colorado or Utah OTC archery deer and Wyoming rifle antelope/deer. I have some connections for accommodations in S. Central Utah and Wyoming. Would you please share any thoughts and/or recommendations that come to mind? I know there is a ton more to consider and information required to make any perfect suggestions. If it sounds like I missed something, please steer me in the right direction. Thank you very much.

Edge, I confirm 100%. It's easier to lose count than keep it if you're driving during the low light hours. In learning the big game application process in UT, it doesn't look like I can buy an OTC deer permit like we can in AZ. It looks like the best process is to put in for the draw in 2016 and surrender the tag before the season starts if I draw something better somewhere else (i.e. Both MD and Antelope in WY). The nice thing is, I'll duck hunt UT either way so the hunting license doesn't go to waste (at least completely) if I do surrender. This is making me lean towards UT instead of CO. Still researching though..

Macro Photography

Blue-winged teal! Cinnamon Teal! Beautiful bird and photo, Wampus! There it is. Thank you. Could be a Green-Winged lol, US Fish And Wildlife categorize them all together when they do wing surveys cause its almost impossible to tell which is which just from the wing alone. Maybe you're joking and I didn't catch it clear enough but the GWT wing differs greatly from BWT and Cinnamon's. The latter two, yes, are extremely difficult to tell apart by the wing alone. -
Appreciate it, Alaska goes from big to huge pretty quick. It's just not feasible until later in life, but I will get there!! Thing is, I'm certain I can get the wife to go with me on a larger scale fishing trip, with a hunt or two mixed in for me on the side. Thank you. This was top 3 all along, I feel a high country backpack hunt like this would bring the most personal satisfaction when it is all said and done, and that's a big component I'm after, to test out all the skills I have been accumulating the last several years getting into the hunting game. Once there are kids, things won't be as personal obviously, and I'd like to have that accomplishment under my belt so to speak. Either that accomplishment or a species I haven't harvested yet, i.e. Antelope-WY. Our family friends live in between Zion and Bryce Canyon NP's. I visit every fall to duck hunt some private leases with the family, and there are mule deer everywhere! Herds of 100's could be seen on every commute to the blind. This family doesn't really hunt big game, so I would still have the 100% DIY thing going, but a really nice place to stay which would afford me a ton of scouting time. My wife would also enjoying going up and scouting with me so it gets to become a win-win. __________________________________________________________________________________ As of now, I'm purchasing preference points (first available today) for both mule deer and antelope in Wyoming. I have a good and reliable hunting buddy that just reached out to me and said he would like to join. I figure I could put in for the draw in May, and make a decision based on the success of the draw. If I draw both MD and Antelope, that would make an incredible 10 days of rifle hunting. Drawing just antelope would be cool as long as I can pick up a doe/fawn tag or two as well. As a backup, if the WY draw doesn't work in my favor, It's OTC archery for sure. Decisions will have to made whether I choose CO/UT and mule deer/elk. Even though they offer different levels of satisfaction, I would be just as happy tackling an OTC archery hunt by myself for personal reasons as I would rifle hunting with a buddy more for fun. I again, really appreciate the posts and recommendations and I look forward to hearing any more that arise. I more or less have a one track mind for coues here in AZ so out of state mule deer and antelope is most appealing to me. I don't know if I can afford the elk OTC once I factor in scouting, just haven't researched it enough yet. I also didn't consider Texas or Cali, don't know if I will just yet, but I thank you for the input there too. Shea

Dave posted on another site last year that he was going to get into waterfowling with his boys, essentially from scratch. He never once asked for anyone's spots or any sensitive info, just had an awesome attitude and willingness to learn by himself. When he posted a couple topics recently about reloading, and he has his reasons he will share I'm sure, I figured I'd point him to the incredible knowledge base of CWT. I don't know him personally but he's got a lot of character based on what I see him post on the other site, I'm sure he will be a great addition here. Welcome to the site, Dave. -
Happy Birthday, Brian!

I run micro SD adapters in all my trail cameras. If my hunting partner goes to check my cameras or I go to check his, we can put the micro SD's in our phone or tablet and transfer to internal memory, and of course we can still view them on a standard digital camera if that is all that is needed. You're right. Slightly complicated and clunky for some, but to remedy this situation, I bring a bigger 32GB micro SD that gets each individual camera's photos on it, combined. For example, I go to camera 1, put the camera micro SD card in the tablet, transfer photos to internal memory, take the camera micro SD card out, put in the bigger 32GB micro SD, transfer photos from internal memory to 32GB micro SD, delete internal memory photos once they're verified on the card, and free the tablet back to normal to repeat process with cameras 2-5. At the end of the day, my 32GB microSD has cameras 1-5 all on it together and each micro was left with each camera. 2 SD cards per camera is a thing of the past. I usually clear the cameras micro SD card from two visits past, and always leave the most recent set of photos as an additional backup, in case I lose the main card somewhere along the way before it gets backed up on a PC.

Duck Depression
CouesPursuit replied to CouesPursuit's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
Thank you, he is an amazing boy. As I plan on doing a couple cast and blasts on the Colorado River this fall, we've been working on fast current retrieving quite a bit lately, upriver at Saguaro. Determined even at the end of the session. And of course, has to lick every boated fish. -
Duck Depression
CouesPursuit replied to CouesPursuit's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
Got the calls out and polished last week, have been flocking and airbrushing some old school full bodies that were given to me, installed a couple on/off remotes for the wingers, and now the dog won't leave me alone. Duck depression is in full effect for both of us. 100 days to the opener can't come soon enough. 2 ducks or 14, they're all great days in the blind. Not a big fan of eating our Arizona divers but after seeing so much red on the water on a scouting day, I decided to set up in the layout boat one morning and crushed my redhead and canvasback species limits in minutes. Shot the ringers for the dog, and couldn't resist the hooded merg. Donated him to the taxidermist. Back to my favorite puddle ducks Anyone else going crazy? -
It does at least a little bit! I do believe a significant portion (certainly not all) of cameras that are stolen or tampered with are because someone was caught off guard and simply did not want their picture taken. And then, there are just flat out scum of the earth thieves.
-
Could explain why the camera theft is so bad in that area..

I always enjoy your pictures and good for you for having the courage to go solo etc. I spend more and more time alone or with just the dog and I really enjoy it, and see much more wildlife. You have shared you frequent the salt and the reservoirs, one short piece of advice though, the verde from Bartlett down is nothing to be taken lightly. There are narrow "chutes" that will take you and the kayak for a ride, and often times horizontal/fallen willows are there to "clothesline" you. Be careful if you take to the verde, it's a much different animal.
-
Very nice fish you have there and it takes some know-how to repeat that success. Well done and thanks for sharing.
