Oh my sillyness what an end to a ridiculous hunt. Was heading out for one more evening of failure when Big Browns gives me a call and so graciously offers to take us to his super secret A+honey hole. Off we went. We climbed a small miserable mountain and right away found elk. Wrong flavor though. Not to worry, Big Browns not only takes us to this amazing spot, he then FINDS the elk TOO. After a short mad scramble to get everything set up,my niece launches her FIRST bullet at her FIRST big game animal. 530yds. The hours of practice paid off and she laced miss daisy with an (almost) perfect shot. Tucked it right behind the front leg just clipping the elbow. After a VERY short run/fall....elk down. Then the REAL fun began. Big Browns and her dad head back to get the ranger and she and I head through the scrub to find the prize. It took us over an HOUR to find it because of a) thick nasty scrub and b) a little hidden gully that fooled us and c) sheer stupidity on my part for not getting walked on to her. No worries, we had plenty of time because Big Browns doesn't know how to change a tire. Luckily he has hillbilly friends that do and came to his rescue. A few cuts later and elk bags in the Ranger and HAPPY niece. It was really AMAZING. her dad had been down with bronchitis for over a week, This was the first chance he had to get out. Shouldn't have because he was hacking up a lung but didn't want to miss it"just in case". Thank you again to all who offered help. Absolutely made this a fantastic experience. THIS is what makes this forum a great place. And of course I can't thank Big Browns enough for making this happen(after ALREADY helping TWO other youths this morning!!!!). And to wildwoody for saving the day. Just......AWESOME. Thank you guys. we did get some video but I am WAY too tired to mess with them right now.

Struck out again today. Got really close this morning but they saw us before we saw them. Went to a few spots that some members on here suggested. One was REALLY good. Unfortunately it was REALLY good for someone else right before we got there. We were at least able to render assistance to the dad and 3 boys who had killed an elk and had no way to get it out. Hopefully Karma comes back quickly. lol Will try again. Thanks to all who have sent help.

Plans ABCDE and F have all failed. LOL They are not talking and all water holes are dry. Except for the two right off the main rd which all the campers have circled around. So tomorrow we are hoping for dumb blind luck.

Well THAT didn't work. LOL Had a plan this morning and failed. Campers EVERYWHERE. Still lots of time and a new plan this afternoon.

Try that with a 4b elk and you won't live to tell about it...

4 for 4. BIL got some sweet redemption after 2 hard years of bad luck and bad mistakes. lost an average bull earlier in the day and was bummed. went out for the evening hunt and absolutely laced the biggest elk to come out of here in many years. not great genetics in here but lots of elk. makes for a fun hunt. now we need to teach him to get down low and long arm so his elk looks bigger......lol dude is 6'5" so everything looks small and they finally fed us a decnt meal. off to coyote hunt in the morning and wrap this trip up

my turn. 485 yds across same canyon as last night. almost a boring hunt. saw this guy at last light out in the valle and decided to check on him in the morning. walked to the edge of the trees and he was pushing his cows up to the other side to bed. be didnt make it. the little 3x trailer was ecstatic as he just got uograded. lol one of the prettiest places i have seen and i shoot this guy in the ugliest spot in the whole ranch. still tastes good though 3 down 1 to go

Another thread had me thinking about this. Many hunters have a very negative view of "road hunters". Some road hunt out of necessity(age, disability, injury, etc etc) but these are not the guys I am talking about here. I'm curious how people feel about a situation where an otherwise "anti" road hunter type comes across a target of opportunity. Do you consider that "road hunting"? Would YOU take a shot at that "target of opportunity" or is it all about the chase for you?
-
seems like an ok place to hunt elk so far....
-
i got 7 you can have...
-
I am bored and there is nothing like a good road hunting thread to pass the time. and it was more of a "target of opportunity" question than a road hunting question. I just phrased it poorly. Still 24 hrs until I leave for NM and I can't stare at the clock any longer....

That's what it's all about. Congrats to him. And to you for raising him right.

Just a lot of work for a little oil. Just be sure to keep your oil filled. A little oil doesn't hurt unless it is causing other problems.
-
Thats awesome man. Youre the type of guy that would always be fun to hunt with.

As Curtis said, Your gas leak is most likely from the float valve not seating due to buildup from letting gas sit in the carb. seafoam could clean it but might need a carb kit if the little rings have hardened. very easy to do. You need to check that your differentials are not leaking from somewhere. That oil is very much like engine oil. Given the location it very well could be. Just track the fluid if you can. Fluid can run horizontal or along lines too. So it could be coming from something several feet away from where it is dripping. Engine oil leaks are not uncommon in old bikes. seals just get old. most of the time not worth rebuilding or even putting a new seal on. But for sure try to trace it.

agreed. The fluid is coming from above. What color is the fluid and what does it smell like? Does it taste bitter?
