i suggest a 60 nosler partition or one of the all copper ( tsx) bullets though
  2. Desert- have you decided on ammo for your .243 for open country? what is your distance and groups size goal?

To flute or not to flute

Zeke- nice looking rifle. weight is an advantage for long range leave it as is.

    Remington 700 7mm

do you reload ? did you shoot the deer in your pic with the 7mm? i have an adl 7mm , with its factory barrel it shoots one load real real good. . the rem sendero is a great factory gun. my 7mm sendero shoots everything good. a rem 700 long range is cheaper than a sendero, but heavier too . of course weight is an advantage for long range and precision. adding a heavy krieger barrel ( fluted if you want less weight) to your current rifle is your best bet. and a good stock like a bell and carlson m40 , or an h and s precision , manners, macmillian. . that have bedding blocks. .

    Picking out a scope

i do not care for the 50mm objective. raises the scope too high off the barrel. then your head has to be way high off the stock or you have to install an adjustable check piece. i do like leup vx 3 scopes.

218- are you in north phx? is the rifle a weatherby accumark?

    257 Weatherby Mark V Accumark

install a leup 6.5-20 with a kenton knobb. the heavier bullets will give you less drop and wind drift after 600 yards. the lighter ones like the 87 is faster and flatter to 600 yards. ienjoy.
  17. the rifle is more important than the cartridge. for long range it takes a precision rifle, a good scope with good ammo and a skilled rifleman. i suggest a .257 weatherby accumark. or a remington sendero.

    30-06 for coues

the 140's a are faster and flatter to 500-600
  19. you need a remington 700 long range. or a .243 remington 700 heavy barrel.
  20. i was told cabelas receive guns for free. gun shops charge.

    30-06 for coues

i use 168's mainly. 165 too. but any from 150 to 180 would be fine. depends on how far you are shooting and how well your rifle shoots that load.

    What grain for 30-06?

the original question asked about a 30-06. not sure why any one is mentioning a .270 . i do not see a any difference between the 7/08 ... both according to hornady shoot a 140 at 2940 fps. having shot in competition out to 1000 yards , 600 yards with a 30-06, my experience ( actually seeing others) with factory sporter weight rifles is they have a real hard time achieving the precision at 500 yards and more.
