My first time hunting Coues deer or unit 36A
roninflag replied to Gduncan's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
G- you have the right idea getting out and scouting. if you do not see some bucks before the season. you will be much less likely to score during the seasoon. glassing is a good technique, usually you need to climb a mtn first to get where they are. the 7mm-08 cartridge has plenty of power. the question i have is the marlin capable of the accuracy needed for a 300-500 yd shot. what kind of groups are you getting at 200 yd? i prefer tikka, sako or remington ? -
does it have any notches on it??

7mm Mag Loads. Updated with hunt story!
roninflag replied to outdoor rush's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
that 150 ttsx load would work for me!!! not sure what rifle huntjunkie was shooting; i shot 180's out my 7 mags they shot good but kicked a lot ; one of them does not have a brake. the 168's shoot great. the 140 bergers a little more finicky. and the 140's bergers little light for elk. -

Jake - in that case i would use either a 140, 160 or 168 accubond. same powders. starting with H-1000 (since it is an extreme)......(i speak for only me- quite envious you can get her to hunt that, ( much awesome) -

Outdoor- nice rifle. what is she shooting at? coues tag?? -
Adicted- when you get a rifle- either buy one or build one 950$ to 1250$ they can be real consistent. factory rifles from savage like the LRP or 12-f-class and from remington the 5-r or sendero. From your original post i was not sure you would want that.. Building one can be as good or better. For targets weight is an advantage. Also reloads you can taylor to your rifle. Since you are shooting a factory barreled sporter in a caliber that kicks quite a bit i was afraid you would spend a lot of time and money on factory ammo and have nothing but a shoulder bruise and empty brass. If you do try , your best bet is the ammo i suggested in my other post.

30-06 for long range - i loaded and fired 2500 rounds of 30-06 in competiton(out ot 600 yards) in a year . it is a great round. i can tell you what it takes. a good rifle and good ammo. last time had my rifle at the the range with my ammo. i shot 3 groups all the .3's at 100 yards.
-
As much as i like the 30-06 - " can i get consistent at 500-600 yards"? unlikely. i have shot against folks shooting 30-06 sporter weight rifles at 500 and 600. sporter weight rifles are harder to shoot than a little heavier rifle. the time and money you spend on factory ammo for the "06 could be quite bit. easy, cheap way..... - get a 308 700 varmint with a 4-12 from dick's (499?) there is a . lot of target 308 ammo around.
-
for longer range shooting the 168 berger is best. so you will need to find some of that ammo . the 168 berger is loaded by hsm. also for long range target shooting only, hornady and fed both have ammo. how is your rifle shooting now??

95 grain balitic silver tip or 87 berger.

.243 handloads with 95 grain
roninflag replied to azhuntnut's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
i use 42. 0 I4350 , lapua brass, 210m . 030 off the lands -
i have shot quite a few deer with the .243. for coues most folks would reccomend any of the ones from 85 grains and up. , also the one that shoots best in your rifle. And while i have even killed a some with a 70 balistic tip. the 90-95 i think are best.

rem300- 600 was not made in 7mm-08. the model 7 is virtually the same action as a 600. that one hunt put pics of is a nice one.

azhunt- you do not say what rifle or scope. i/h4350 will give you a little more velocity; varget or I4064 for accuracy. lapua brass, 210m or br-2 primers. -
considering it has rained 40 day and 40 nights, there should be plenty in most areas to sit on. i finally saw the sun today. enjoy those with tags.
-
What rifle? what scope? bear season opens 10-4. you could scout and hunt.
-
I would love to see a picture of that ram or any desert ram that scores 187!!
-
Ok. i had to go to phx to see the sun. i feel like am living near mt waialeale on the island of kauai. rain . rain . every day. roninflag
-
LOve2- with 49% hunt success it should be a great tag. have you shot a deer ? have you seen coues in that unit? what rifle/scope and caliber??

you will love it. -
Aggrree. Danny the reason i suggested the ones i did. is because the you need to shoot it a lot. remington 700 243 varmint. the 770 does not have an adjustable trigger. you can not rebarrel it. it is a disposable gun. a rifle lasts a long time ;also if you decide on something different you get 80% or more on the dollar or more . a good rifle and scope are insurance. a must for me in order to invest the time and effort to hunt. i would think of it this way..... you only have to hunt and shoot better than 86% of the others out there or be lucky. lucky is good too. ron
