  1. Bigfat- welcome. get out and see some coues way ( right now) before the season. get the book from amanda. start running 5 miles a day uphill. if you put in for a late dec tag be prepared to wait 5-10 years or more depending. your post doesn't say where you are. there are tags you can get each year in unint with a lot of deer.

    Need help with 308

my experience is similar. light weight AND long range ?? i have couple rifles that are under 6 pounds without the scope. nice light weight. they do not shoot like the heavier ones. AZ shooter- it is the Rilfe not the caliber ( depending on what you call Long Range). the Rifle has to be capable of shooting good groups to that distance. what is your goal?? 6 inch groups at 600 yards? . a weatherby accumark, remington sendero , winchester laredo. better though to get a remington/ krieger

    Another Gun Question

Car- i have shot several elk with a 30-06, including the last two. i have not shot one with either of my Garands. - factory ammo is not made for a Garand. Except for some special match stuff hornady loads. You need to reload hunting ammo. . It has a long op rod. the pressure curve on factory ammo is too high. - i loaded and shot over 2500 rounds from mine one year. the regs Used to require a 5 round magazine. they are available, i have some. because of the top eject; the garand does not lend itself to scope mounting, even though both of mine have a scope mounts on them. they can be very accurate. i have one that shoots less than .75 inch 5 shot groups at 100 yards. sorry i can't type. i can shoot . ps: the griffin and hough scope mounts are expensive . i have a B/s mount . the gun i carried for bighorn was heavier than my garand. roninflag

    Project rifle

i shoot a lot of 123 scenars in my 6.5. more speed less pressure. enough weight for anything i hunt with it. IMR-4350 is not an extreme powder.

    Remington 700 7mag Sendero

the fluted ones are light enough to hunt with mine are very Accurate. the magnums need a vais. you can add a krieger later then it will shoot every thing good.

    Remington 700 7mag Sendero

huntjunk- i have two senderos and a 1967 adl 7mm mag. all are very accurate. the stainless fluted sendero has accounted for a 176 bighorn, a 221 mule deer and an 85 inch antelope( 590 yards). it has a mk4 6.5-20 with a kenton knobb. h-1000 and h-4831 are good powders. 140 berger and accubond and 168 berger and 162 amax. i use wlrm primers. 215m increaed velocity , pressure and ES. is yours blued or stainless? there is an article in PS magazine recently about the rem 700 sendero/pss used by the secret service.

    need help

i think if you bought a sendero for a good price you would have a better chance. if you try several different loads you will find out what it is capable of. if you are buying factory ammo your savings on the rifle goes down quickly.

    couse caliber

i believe the rifle/ barrel and scope as a unit are more important than the caliber. remington sendero in the caliber of your choice. or ...........the one one with a krieger barrel . or .......the one that shoots a 6" 5 shot group at 700 yards. if you don't hand load it becomes more expensive , and more dicey what you call long range. 300 wm is offered in a lot of different factory ammo combos to try. and it seems to fairly forgiving one finding a accurate load. trying 5 or 6 different boxes of factroy ammo will become expensive quickly. and then practice ammo.............. the 300 wm is way more powerful than you need for coues, and for me a muzzle break would be a must.

    Killing small bucks

the 3 pt rule will give you More small deer. for good genetics the best thing to do is shoot spikes and maintain a 30-100 buck to doe ratio. i am absolutely against a 3 pt rule. unless they sell spike tags over the counter like lion tags.

    Weatherby Ultra Lightweight thoughts

Chris - you do not say what you are shooting at or what caliber . coues? i have an original rem 700 ti they are great.
  15. Stomp - that last sentence is right on. i have not shot against a browning or a ruger in competition. AKA starts his first thread mentioning "600-700 yards " which i consider a very very long shot at coues demanding really good loads/equipment and skill. later he mentions " 300 yards " which i consider a very short shot at coues, i hardly ever am able to get that close. AKA does not mention much load "development". he better is better off with one really good gun/scope than two that shoot " 4-5 inches " at 200 yards. remington makes a 25-06 sendero and ruger makes a hvy barrel 25-06 either one of those will give him a higher probablity of precision than most sporters.

    Weatherby Ultra Lightweight thoughts

i do not know if they are available yet but the NULA made in WV would be my choice. better chance a accuracy to take the longer shots. with a muzzle break you tame the recoil of either. depending on the caliber you choose.
  17. not true; i do get out , not as much as i would like. quite a few compete with factory barrels. i have shot and won with both a remington sendero and a winchester laredo. the custom barrels make it easier to find a competitive load. when talking 500 yard shots on coues ; they are a very small challenging target. i would like to see the ruger 500 yard target. i know what my remington will do.
  18. i have shot against plenty of savages in competition (500 , 600 , 1000). Never a ruger. or a browning. i am ready though. grin.
  19. POB - That is an intersesting observation. AKA- there are a lot of good coues rounds, the 25-06 is one of them so is the 30-06. i do not believe the hawkeye will shoot better groups at 500 yards than your rem 700 . ( you could spend a lot of time and money trying to acheive it but i would have to see it ). I would look for a vanguard-moa, remington sendero or a weatherby accumark , or tikka . no guarantees. but you have a better chance with those. you do not say if you handload

Suggestions on which long range gun to buy

BIG BROWN- a good place to learn more about long range shooting is Longrangehunting.com . my buddies and i have quite a few senderos. they are a great choice. they do not come in .284 win from the factory. it appears your budget will allow you to only buy a factory rifle in the caliber of your choice. you do not say what you are going to be shooting at - paper , elk , coues?? i shoot against savages frequently in competition . it is a lot of fun . grin. on the magnum sendero we all have muzzle breaks which make the recoil much less. once you get a factory sendero if you want a custome barrel i would get a krieger, hart, or broughton.

    Unit 6B mule deer

Hunt- sorry about your legs. the statistics for the last 5 years are available on azgfd. the average hunt success is less than 15%. i live in 6b but i do not put in for that unit. 15% is too low for me. i need an easier hunt . so my strategy in putting in is different. you put in for 6b ? what was your strategy? do you live close to it??

    .270 Effective Range

AZff- if you can achieve that 8" @ 500 in the field, i would shoot . lot of times i am unable to get closer than 400-500 on coues.
  24. roninflag

    .270 Effective Range

AZff- I have shot a lot at 500 yards in F-class competition. there is no better practice ; the 66 round matches are a Real education. for me, my 200 yard groups from a bench must be less than 2" and my 500 yard 5 shot groups must be less than 5" . granted a coues is bigger than 5" ( but way less than the 18" gong you spoke of) however you do not have a bench with you in the field.
