    Any talk??

Heard lots of bulls this weekend. Tracked a bugling pair, ended up getting caught in between about 14 or 15 this morning without realizing it. Only saw a few bulls alone, most were with cows. Was the wife's first time chasing elk. She thought all of them were 400"
  2. Went scouting for my archery hunt this past weekend, left a camera out & managed to snap a picture of this guy for my first animal pics. Also managed to see another 100 elk or so over the weekend, with one bull larger than this, and a bunch that were smaller.

    First Trail Cam Pics---Shooter?

And this, I think, is one of those units. I have gotten lucky on a few cow elk with a rifle before, but this is my first bull tag and first archery elk tag. I don't know how I managed to draw it this year, and I doubt I'll draw it again for many years to come, so letting him grow will be for someone else. Though another two years would produce one heck of a bull.

The Dakota is mine. Been working out there for JB Henderson for about a month now. Been doing some small jobs in 32 and 22, and spent a few weeks outside near oc9 installing some pipe. I know a few guys at Harder and Kinetics that like to hunt. Not wure what your start time is, but feel free to say hi if you ever see me at my truck or walking around. Jerry

    Budapest...

Not sure on the name of the program needed to do it, but essentially you take a whole lot of pictures with a very large camera lens(3200mm or larger). panning from left to right, then back again, overlapping each shot and each row of shots. Then you get home, upload the photos, and 'stitch' the pictures together. A fellow scoutmaster did just this for a backpacking trip we did last month in NM. If you want some really detailed info on it I could put you in touch with him. Jerry

    bow hunter happening

Christine and I had a great time. Didn't do too much shooting, but we enjoyed the seminars and the conversations with new friends. Not to mention she had her first Indian Taco. Look forward to it next year.

Wow, your bullet's got to be RIPPIN' out of your barrel! I'm shooting the same powder and bullet but only 51.5gr. I'm shooting under 1/2" groups at 100yrds and when I bumped up the powder a bit, my groups got larger. I'm about 3100fps so you've got to be SCREAMING! Sounds like your rifle likes it, though. Was my ex's rifle when I lived in Colorado. Pushed it till I noticed the primer unseating and then backed off looking for a good group. Obviously don't have the gun anymore, but that's the info I have on my computer for that load. If my memory serves me right, I found tighter groups at about 2.5gr less, but it was her rifle and that's what she wanted to shoot. She wanted the longest range for a dead on hold she could get. And then had that shot at 40 yards. Go figure. Jerry

55.2gr H4831SC, 110gr Nosler Accubond, seated into the lands. Never owned a chrono so couldn't tell ya the speed. Consistent 7/8" groups at 198 yds. Flipped a buck onto its back and was DRT @ 40 yds. Only animal shot at with this load.

Christine and I had a great time. Was a pleasure to meet all of you who were there. We look forward to the next one. Jerry
  14. Check out LRH.com and search for 338 Edge or contact Shawn Carlock. There is more information from those two then you could possibly take in in a week. Personally, I'd go with either a 20 or 40 MOA inclined rail, oversized bolt handle, 1-10" twist for shooting the 300gr pills, Badger Ordanence rings, and a cosine indicator if you want to shoot the far stuff. Been a few years since I looked into a long range rig, so I'm sure there is newer and greater out there, but that's my thought. Or a 338 Allen Mag Jerry

    Over the counter Antelopa tags

Not sure of any that offer true otc tags, but Wyoming typically has a bunch of leftovers that get sold otc, fist come, fist served. Thought about doing that trip last year, but put it off for another year or two. Jerry

    Tracking

Realizing that I am a newer member here, and one that does not post often, I hesitate to make this post asking for something. I am an assistant scoutmaster with a boy scout troop in Tempe, and many of the boys have approached me asking about the Tracking merit badge. This was one of the very first merit badges every created, but was discontinued in 1952. With this year being the 100th anniversary of scouting, this merit badge, along with 3 others, has been reinstated for this year only, yet with the original requirements. As much as I love hunting, and all that it entails, I know my inexperience would not do the scouts justice if I were to teach them the badge on my own. I'd like to ask among the more knowledgeable members here if one would be willing to spend a Tuesday evening in late May or June helping to teach these young boys about tracking. I've included a link to the merit badge requirements, and thank you for considering helping. Jerry Tracking Merit Badge

    elk hunt in colorado?

Hit up GMUResearch.com. Never hunted 104, but I have a good friend who hunts the untis near Baily. Further away, the Gunnison Basin units as well as the area around Carbondale I have more experience with and would be more then willing to answer any questions you might have about those areas.

    BACKPACKING BOOTS OPINIONS NEEDED

The original Vasque Sundowners(all leather ones, not the cloth/leather ones). They quit making them, but if you find a good used pair you can re-sole them. My dad has put several thousand miles on his pair over the last 23?+ years. I currently have some Danners that have served me well for the last 5 years. Biggest thing is to make sure you match your boot to what you are going to be doing, i.e. load, distance, terrain, weather, etc...

    25-06 For Elk

1st off, grats on the tag. 2nd, I've seen a 25-06 take 3 cow elk cleanly, but all shots were where they needed to be and the longest was just under 150 yards. The only mistakes you can make are to take a gun you are not confident in shooting, or not knowing/exceeding your limitations. (Pertaining to question at hand)

  24. +1 on lrh's website. There is enough material there to keep you reading for a week straight yet have more questions then when you started. There are a few members on there who help train professionals and enthusists alike, and have answered questions for me in the past. I hope you enjoy your reading.

    Unit 9 cow hunt

Between FR 302, 320, and the Grandview road there are over a dozen tanks that I located back in August while I had a deer tag in my pocket. Every single one had elk sign at them, and at three of the tanks we actually saw elk, mostly cows. Feel free to pm me and I'll try to point you to a little more specific area once I get home and can look back at my maps. -Jerry
