    Couldn't duck

Would not want to be hit in the head by a 12lb goose going 70mph. Lucky his neck didn't break. Hope he is okay.

    Elk Options

So the young man that passed his hunter ed class this past weekend has now put in for his first elk hunt. He was a bit dismayed by the low odds of drawing tags, and asked me what his other options would be to hunt elk this fall. I know of leftover cow tags in CO, and some tribal hunts here in AZ, but what other reasonably priced rifle cow hunts are there that can be hunted in a week (with weekends for travel) by a 12 year old? I know Montana does combo deer/elk tags, which he said was cool, but the driving time has me worried for going after two species (unless the game is abundant enough to get into them frequently). Backpack hunts are out, as he is only about 80lbs and I am not in a position to outfit that type of camp for both of us, and then put it on my back. Thanks Jerry

    Elk Options

Traveling is an option, though I'd likely hunt too if we were traveling that far and I was footing the gas bill (his parents are teachers, so limited funds). Combo deer & elk sounds like a good time, will definitely talk to him about it next time I see him. My only concern would be what his folks could afford, tag wise. I'll look into it during some of my oh-so-importnat meetings at work this week...

While I appreciate you taking time to respond to this post Delw, I do not see how anything you talked about is an answer to the single question that was asked. It is obvious that you made many assumptions (all of which are wrong) in your response, and I would invite you to respond again if you have any info that directly relates to the question asked, and not just fluff and speculation to take up space on Amanda's servers. To everyone else, I appreciate the responses. Will definitely look into the transfer rules on the WMAT as there is no relation between the youth and I, as well as the youth draw hunts in neighboring states. Thank you.

    Credit card update

Just because it is in the regs does not mean they have to go by that. It seems like they make amendments to the printed regulations every other year or so and post the updates online. I am sure they will do that again, if they have not already.

Where to fish for the new year?

I will be back from China in time for the holidays and am planning on taking a week for vacation before heading back over here. I want to relax on a beach for a week and get a few days of fishing in while I am there. I primarily fly fish, but have always wanted to try my hand at pelagic species. I've done the Bahamas for bones in October, but not sure where would be a good choice for December/January. I've been look at the pacific side of Costa Rica and Panama, but am also curious about places closer, like Cabo. If anyone has any thoughts or recommendations, I would love to hear them. Thanks.

Where to fish for the new year?

Ended up in Puerto Vallarta and got out one morning for 4 hours. Had a great time.
  12. A young man I know has shown great interest in hunting but has had some issues passing the online portion of the hunter ed on his own and has become a bit discouraged. He does qualify under AZ's education laws as a special education student and has his IEP. I feel that his major issue with passing the online tests is not his understanding of the subject matter, but of a result of his lack of reading comprehension. Does anyone know if it would be possible/legal for me to assist him with explaining the words he has issues with both for the online potion and the test at the field day? Thanks.

    2019 Coues Hunt suggestions

Save your points, hunt them OTC Archery in January or on a leftover tag in November. The OTC archery hunt typically has an archery Javelina hunt going on at the same time. Get your binos mounted on a tripod and glass. Don't worry about units to burn points on right now, just get down here and start glassing.

Hunter Ed class help for SPED child

Took the test with him last night. Had to talk through about 1/3 of the questions with him. He missed 3 total, and is now scheduled for class on Sunday.

Hunter Ed class help for SPED child

I had already contacted the dept, and have helped teach him the skills, both field craft and how to research the regs to find answers to questions. Heard back from the dept a few minutes ago, and I can help him understand the content at the field day test. While I agree with everything you all have posted, my concern was helping him understand the computer part, but then not being able to help him on the field day. If he got to that point and failed, it would highly discourage him from every trying again. Apparently there is a box you check when registering for the field day that asks if there is any special assistance that is required. At that point you simply coordinate with the instructor once the filed day starts.

    deer

I shot a perfectly broadside deer many years ago at less than 12 yards. Pins were solidly on his heart. Upon releasing my arrow, he ducked and jumped forward, and the arrow went through his hind quarters, severing his urethra in the process. Chit happens just as easily at 10 yards as it does at 100.

    Abaco Island Bahamas (Pic Heavy)

Those prices sound spot on for the time. I've chanced it and gone at the end of hurricane season, before the fishing season really gets going, and managed slightly lower prices with lunch thrown in, but most of the lodges are closed and you have to find your own guide. Tons of sharks everywhere, glad you saw that one headed for your sons hand. I usually go with a 8 wt and 10 wt set up with LA reels for bones and tarpon, with a 6'6" MH spinning rig set up for Barracuda or sharks in the back of the skiff. If you head that way again without the family (unless they enjoy total seclusion), check out Andros.

    Abaco Island Bahamas (Pic Heavy)

The Bahamas are a special place. Bones are highly addicting, and I'm glad your family had an amazing time. When you decide to head back, let me know and I can point you to some lesser known locations on the islands. And take your fly rod next time.

    Les Baer Pistols

Agreed. No need for the competition stuff, but you definitely get the quality craftsmanship that goes into those same pistols even when buying a carry piece for 1/2-2/3 the price.

    Les Baer Pistols

Legendary guns should have a few in stock. Never dealt with them, but bookmarked them a few years ago when I was searching for high-end 1911's. I would also seriously look at having Matt make you a pistol, or Ed Cameron here in the valley. I've shot both, and would take anything either of them make over just about any Les Baer, Wilson Combat, Ed Brown or Nighthawk (and by saying I would, I mean I have [by far the best pistols I have ever owned], and I will again).

Where to fish for the new year?

Well, finally back from China and have a week booked in Puerto Vallarta. Wasn't my first thought of where to go, but I'm sure it will be a good time. Not sure if I am looking forward more to the fishing or not freezing my butt off in that cold Siberian wind anymore.
