HUGE public land sale Cochise co / South Willcox
bojangles replied to elkaholic's topic in Classified Ads
i'd love a place at the strong hold. -
thanks for the great replies, keep 'em coming. i'd really like to get out there and hunt the old fashioned way, i think the biggest hold up right now is work, kids, etc. it keeps me from really planning a big hunt, seems i can't let myself get away. i think if i could ever push past that, i could really get out there.

i think i'd like to give it a whirl anyways. i'm not into trends, and think with big brands pushing "back country" lingo around, it's gonna get popularized, and possibly not be what it is in the near future. but i know, they gotta sell their $350 pants and $600 packs, so some certain wanderlust must be prostituted out so we'll all train to hunt and drink mountain ops and whatnot. but i'm looking for solitude and challenge, probably not the real thing, but maybe just a taste of what i think it might be. reading my grandpa's memoirs got me thinking about what a softy i've become. he punched cows in the old days by himself in the wilderness, sometimes a couple days ride from camp. i think i'd like to do something as tough as he was, even if just once. since hunting is my thing, it seems it might be my opportunity at hand. i'll chat more tomorrow, thanks for the lively conversation.

i refuse to pay money on special food to work out. maybe that's why i'm not famous. at this point, i'm strictly calisthenics and biking. last nite i rode as fast as i've ever ridden, today, i feel like i'm gonna die. i'm gettin old.

i'm trying to figure out why i need a portal account. why can't they just post the results?

well, you'll see a huge improvement over that old thing. I'd start with shooting PSE's and Missions, I just bought a PSE premonition HD, (pro series, not available at bass pro) an incredibly high kinetic energy and fast bow for the money. It's funny how a lot of bows look just like it for $4-500 more. The mathews halon looks and specs just like it, but costs a solid $400 more. There's a lot of bow companies that have been trying to keep up with Arizona bows here lately. It's a tough task. Missions are great bows for the money also. Not all the bells and whistles but they are shooters for the money. there's hoyt, prime, obsession, athens, bowtech...the list goes on. they all gonna kill deer. develop a budget and go from there. i'd set aside for a good sight, decent arrows and broadheads, as if not more important than the bow itself.
-
wow, that's generous. i wish i knew someone who needed it.
-
nice, bro!
-
well, i'm a budget guy, so..... everything i suggest is going to be less expensive. what are you shooting now? there's quite the variety of bows that will kill elk. we've gotten so picky, it almost sickens me sometimes. i think my next bow may be a stick bow. i haven't actually heard anybody say, "i hate my new bow" in a long time. i think it just boils down to, what makes you feel good inside.

Live in Tucson, First Bow - PSE or Bull Basin?
bojangles replied to cwnova's topic in Bows, arrows, broadheads
care to elaborate? i've always been told this, but just plunked down on a 6.125" brace height bow, and honestly, can't tell the difference. maybe its the string stop. -

i think it's odd that there are so many negative reviews on PSE's shop. You'd think they'd offer top notch service, them being in Tuscon and all. And i'm surprised that Bull Basin doesn't carry PSE, once again, them being in Tuscon and all. Crazy world. That said, i really like my PSE, absolutely crazy kinetic energy. I also like mission bows as well, for an entry level product. They're really shootable for the money. -
boy, i hate to give advice when it's not asked for, oh well, here i go anyways.... why not have matt mclearn build you a custom rifle? It will cost less than Christiansens and probably shoot lights out better. he's not widely known, but he is well known amongst the world's top shooters. plus, he's an AZ local.
-
just talked to a buddy who was certain he'd get drawn, but no charges. he just broke down and called his credit card company, and they said he'd been charged for twice from AZGFD, even though it wasn't showing up yet.

it is a goal of mine to one day build a long bow and kill a deer or elk with it. i found some great stuff on youtube, with detailed instructions on bow building. i think killing a big game animal with a stick and string would be one of the most satisfying things a hunter could accomplish.

buy the way, i put it through the chrono yesterday, and it shot 323 fps. with my hunting set up. I'm shooting an old Gold tip vapor pro, which is no longer made, but is a 7.9 gpi, cut at 28 inches for my 29" dl, and a 100 grain tip. but i've ordered a dozen easton hexx, which are also a 7.9 gpi, but have a smaller diameter and are also .001 straightness; since i can no longer get the vapor pro's.

i hafta say i'm pleased as punch with my new bow. I'd been shooting a Mission X3 for several years now, but really thought i'd need to upgrade my speed. The mission was buttery smooth to draw, which was going to be hard to let go of. I think it had the same cams as the mathews switchback, as i'd been told, but never confirmed. None the less, it was a good shooter for years. I looked at a lot of bows, but wouldn't pick even pick them up off the shelf, as the price approached $1k. Sorry, no can do, i'm not plunking $1500 or even $1000 on a bare bow, i don't care if it calls the animals in. I noticed a hoyt charger, i think it was, that was somewhat inexpensive, but it had plastic limb pockets. No go, as i'm pretty harsh on my gear. Another year went by, and i noticed a PSE Premonition HD for $599. So i shot it. The draw cycle was somewhat stiffer up front and towards the end than my mission, but it broke off nicely to a comfortable holding weight. It was noticeable quieter, had a string stop, and seemed a bit faster, though i haven't put it thru a chrono yet. So, i asked a deer if he thought it would be better if i shot him with a smooth draw cycle, or a stiff draw cycle. He didn't think it mattered too much. So, i thought, if a deer doesn't care about the draw cycle, why would i give it a second thought? By this time, the end of the season was drawing near, and much to the delight of my inner jew, the bow was 499. I took the plunge. After a week of shooting, i realized that the draw wasn't nearly as bad as i thought it would be, and pulling the string became second nature. I used my trophy taker pronghorn off the mission, but upgraded to an IQ 7 pin. That was a real upgrade. I found out that the center dot thing worked great. I soon realized that a simple glove on my hand was torquing my old bow probably a half an inch, and had caused me to miss 4 deer. So far this rig is shooting great, i just take my glove off before the shot. Also, you can correct torque from strange shot angles simply by lining up the dot. I can't recommend this sight enough. I feel like i could go pro right now, lol. So, i killed a deer with this rig in January. It was quiet enough that i missed with the first shot, (not compensating for the steep downward angle, and hit a smidge high) and the deer couldn't find me to save his life, despite his best efforts. I held the pin a tad lower and drilled him on the second shot. I'm really, really liking this bow. Especially for the money, it's a fantastic shooting rig. Fast, quiet, accurate. I just stepped outside, and shot some nice 1" groups at 30 yards, and i hadn't picked up the bow in a while. pics in second post.

i have mine sighted in to 80 yards, and i have shot great groups that far. at this point, i don't feel comfortable with shooting a deer that far, but with a little more work, i know i will easily be there. my last arrow i shot at 80 yards was 4" from the previous shot. I think this sight is very capable, but it is my first higher end sight, ($170), so i don't have too much to compare it to. but the bow torque indicator in incredible. I honestly did miss 4 deer because i was wearing a glove. I'd be shooting dead money, but when i'd hunt, it would get cold and a deer would come in. (i only missed in january, come to think of it). August shots were money all the way. Of course, i had a glove on, and blow 25 yards shots, not really knowing how. I'd practice, go over everything again, in my head, and not know how i could miss a 25 yard shot by a foot. after i got the IQ, I drew my bow in my stand this january, only to find that the bow was so torqued it was crazy. I pulled my glove off, drew again, this time, no torque. To make a long story short, my next shot smoked a deer at 35 yards, only this time i pulled my glove off right before the shot. This sight will help correct torque caused when you are leaning around a bush or tree, or leaning out of a tree stand, or are wearing a glove, or any other anomaly caused when real world hunting shots are less then idealistic. I've had no problems shooting targets, but then again, everything is perfect, im always standing or sitting the same way, etc. But when you get in the field, things change, and the landscape is what it is, and you have to take unorthodox shots. This sight makes it "orthodox." this sight does not compensate for trajectory caused by steep angles, however. you still need an angle compensating rangefinder for that. I made that mistake, and it almost cost me a deer.
