  1. Can anyone tell me of their experiences with shooting Coues at 400+ yards with a 22 cal bullet. I am interested in the bullet used, caliber of rifle, and how it performed. My nephew used my 223 and shot his first deer with it. At 230 yards, the bullet went completely through the deer and it jumped once and fell over. I was really impressed with that and it got me wondering how it would do at even longer ranges if required. THX
  2. Heck ya! she's Tuff!!! LOL I wrote the original post and the rifle My nephew and my daughter shoot is the ol' Model 70 223.
  3. Thanks for the input. I usually use my faithful 300WM so I can reach out there with confidence. My nephew had just turned ten when he used it and I am prepping myself for when my kids are old enough. It will shoot sub MOA five shot groups at 400 yards so the accuracy is awesome. My nephew shot his with a plain old PSP but I want to try the Boattails for the extended range ballistics advantage. My seven year old shoots this rifle and does so very well for her age.

    Casey had an OK hunt

Congrats!! Every puddy tat is an awesome one. You may want to consider the lifesize though, I was going to do a rug with my first cat and the taxidermist talked me into a lifesize. Its a lot of money but I could kiss him for the advice.

    bullet selection

Good ol' Nosler BT's work out of my 300WM. You may get some shock damage but a little meat is better than missing and not having any at all. These bullets are deadly accurate. However, I would not use them on elk sized game.

    Prime coues area being developed

This does suck as does every foothills development. However, at least this should get rid of the archery/shotgun only area and it will go back to the 1/4 mile rule. I was sitting on the west ridge above Saddlebrook glassing when the first bulldozers came into that valley years ago and I was devastated. I guess it isn't my idea of progress. It really does amaze me how years ago the county wouldn't let these developments happen due to the fact there was not sufficient water. Now we are a corrupt enough society that they don't care if we have any water or not.

    Who Needs Mexico???

I feel the same way. It is hard for me to justify spending the money for the same caliber buck one can kill in AZ. Congrats on some fine bucks!!

    new arrival

You must be really proud. Congrats!!!
  10. I shot this buck Sunday morning at 448 yards from one hilltop to the other. He has three extra trash points and alot of mass which gives him some character. I gross scored him at 103 2/8". This is the biggest bodied deer I have ever shot. It was an awesome hunt! We saw alot of young bucks and I passed a 90+ incher on Saturday morning. The weather was excellent.

    Minimum Cal for Coues (youth)

On my nephews first hunt he used a 223 of mine. There are premium bullets on the market if you handload that do suprisingly well. He shot a spike at 230 yards right behind the shoulder and the bullet passed completely through. The deer jumped and fell. Normally I would not condone such a small caliber rifle but it is very important to teach kids to shoot accurately and they will not if they are flinching due to recoil. A good hit with a small caliber is better than a bad hit with a magnum. I will have a daughter hunting soon and she will be using the 223. Good luck and happy hunting

Seen the fee proposals for 2006?

DiamondbackAZ, I must have gotten ahold of a different fee proposal than you did. Mine says the license and tag would cost 117.00 per person, not 50. Like the writers before me, I don't drink or have new equipment but I do hunt very seriously and I am sure we hunt for the same reasons. Hunting is a great way for families to enjoy nature together and spend quality time. We hunters need to stick together if we are to keep hunting. Well I'm going hunting.

Seen the fee proposals for 2006?

All I will say is that if you are opposed to the fee increases, you had better make yourself heard by emailing or attending one of the meetings. The G&F took a survey last year on the increases and I beleive around 85% of the replies were opposed to it. The only thing they will listen to is a mob of people writing them. The absence of opposition is considered support by the department. I sure hate to see the department make hunting a rich mans sport. A family of four will have to pay an obscene amount of cash to apply for multiple species. At least it is obscene for me, maybe you guys make more than I do? My 2 cents.

    Friday's Buck

Come on guys, You need to all learn to keep a secret and not let the nonresidents know about the potential of this unit. Now they will all want in on the action.

    skull preservation

That is an awesome find!! All I usually find are weaner buck antlers. I killed a 160lb. tom in 33 in 94 and its measurements added up to 14 6/8".

    Rude hunters

I just had some more this last weekend. My father was stalking some pigs and we were talking on radios about the pigs. Some guy comes on the radio and says " I'm glad your finding them because we aren't seeing any over here. These guys must have been scanning channels on a GMRS radio to find us. We were on channel 18 Sub Channel 7. The odds of them convieniently being on the same channel but never talking for the first two hours of daylight are slim. Then they proceded to move in on us and chase the pigs everywhere. I feel for the people that suck at hunting so bad that they have to follow others around.

    Everyone please look at this!

If this passes, a lot of the "LEGAL ACCESS" that we take for granted now will surely be locked up.

    Rude hunters

These people you speak of are in almost every whitetail hunt I go on. My wife's second deer she killed was on the ground across the canyon from us and had been motionless for at least ten minutes before one of the sound chasers came across it and shot it twice, once in the ear and once in the gut. This was only an hour after another guy yelled "Seen anything!!" and scared the first deer she was going to shoot off (unit 33). Another day I watched nine hunters from my pre-dawn perch as they fanned out like British soldiers determined to take the hill I was on. I was fortunate and killed a 98" buck just as they topped the hill (unit 33). I glassed a nice buck in 36A only to have three guys come up behind us and see where we were looking. While we were in position to shoot the deer and were waiting for him to get up that evening. The same three idiots who came up behind us walked all the way around to the other side of the deer and jumped him up. They let lead fly and one of the guys actually hit him on the run. I could go on and on.. I feel your pain!!!! I only hope that you guys express your position of the hunts being overcrowded to the G&F dept. Or maybe someone should call Taulman and have him pull some strings for us. He is obviously in tight with them since they did absolutely nothing to address the nonresident problem. If Lark ever writes his book, I have some comical yet disturbing stories for him.
