I helped a friend on that hunt. He did pretty well on the first day as well.

With all the good hunters whining. I think I will double down. I'll get a go pro, start a you tube channel and tag out on all 6 of my otc permits and give unit numbers. The taxman has been very unkind to me lately so I could use the extra coin.

Last year I hunted 40 days and did not tag out with local knowledge. My nephew who is a better hunter than you or I (he is the guy you pay your guide fees to)hunted 20 days and did not tag out.  This is very much a difficult hunt.  

This nephew just happened to get very lucky

My nephew hunted otc elk for two hours. It was his first big game animal since he was 13.  Fun quick hunt.

It's just a matter of timing. I go through Payson too early in the morning and sometimes get back through after business hours.

After a brief but important conversation with 257stw. I discovered the binos I purchased need to have the stud pressed on.
