I also have to stress that as great and wonderful as technology is nothing beats real world experience, data and a log book. These programs will get you close and will definitely get you on the gong at long ranges but is rarely centered up. Small adjustments up or down by a click or two are needed to fine tune in most cases.

Yeah litz mentions that the .512 number is not a constant but works most of the time on most bullets. The other important thing to input is the scope height. I see a lot of people just keep the standard 1.5" and call it good. Scope height makes a big difference in the calculations.

The g7 form factor fits better with most modern day long range bullets having a boat tail and longer ogive. If you know the g7 it will produce a more accurate drop chart as it is not nearly as velocity dependant as a G1. Nosler lists a G1 based b.c. and is generally exaggerated by quite a bit. A quick easy way to estimate G7 b.c. is to take the weight of a bullet divided by 7000 to get its weight in pounds. Then divide that number by the dia of the bullet squared and then divide that number by the bullets form factor. The standard g7 form factor is 1 but some bullets depending on what you are shooting like bergers and Amax have a slightly lower drag profile than the standard in certain calibers so I like to use 0.95 when I am unsure. This will give you the G7 b.c or at least pretty close to it. To find the G1 you simply divide the G7 by .512 For example I will use the sierra 155gr match king in 308 which I know is almost identical to the g7 standard. It has a published G1 b.c of .450 155/7000 = .02214 .02214 / .308×2 = .233 (G7) .233/.512 = .455 (G1) As you can see this comes out pretty dang close to the published .450 bc You can do this for most bullets to find a pretty close estimate in actual b.c. the trickiest part about it is the form factor. All of this data as well as the form factors for most long range bullets can be found in Bryan litz book applied ballistics for long range shooting. Outstanding resource of information and well worth the 50 bucks.

Plink may not be the right word with this cartridge as ammo is pretty pricey at about $17 a box. My local Walmart has some on the shelf but no rifles to go with it.

Berger bullets for hunting
STOMP442 replied to hunter1026's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Never ever had a problem with them. They are the best bullet money can buy as far as im concerned. They have extremely high b.cs that make them ideal for us coues hunters looking to buck the wind on a cross canyon shot. Terminal performance is oustanding and more often than not the animals will drop where they stand. -
Absolutely. These are great rifles for the money and boyds stocks just released 3 stocks custom inlet for the axis. No more flimsy plastic stock and the ability to add a heavier contour barrel.
-
A 243 fits the bill then. If you do decide to get one I would recommend finding a rifle with at least a 9 twist to better stabilze the high b.c bullets for deer. Might also look into the 260 remington. 85-140 grain bullets offer a lot of versatility as well.
-
What are you currently using for a coyote set up? The 243 works great but I prefer using at least an 85 grain bullet to maximize the potential of the caliber.

That 6.5 is a beast and one heck of an accurate rifle. Nice to see it racking up some kills. Great pics and stories on these hunts and a couple nice bucks to boot. -
Berger 95gr vld in 243 load data
STOMP442 replied to hunter1026's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Berger lists a max load of 45.3 for H4831 and 48.4 for H1000. 44.5gr of H4831 is what my gun likes with a 95 grain sierra match king. Savage model 10 with 9.25 twist. -
Get the Burris signature zee rings. They come with 10 moa inserts just in case you need to add a little and they are the best rings made.

WHAT RIFLE WILL YOU BE SHOOTING THIS SEASON?
STOMP442 replied to AZ_SAWBUCK's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
Ah to many to choose but it will probably be the 6.5-06 Ackley improved that I recently built. Winchester model 70 26" E.R.Shaw fluted barrel Redfield revenge 6-18 140 Berger vld 59.0gr H4831 Velocity = 3180 fps Five shot group at 800 yards at 3" -
The 65 grain game king would be my deer bullet.
-
My savage model 12 varmint and savage axis both have 12 twist barrels and I can shoot the 69 grain match king into 3/4" groups at 200 yards and they stabilize fine out to 800 yards with 35.5 grains of reloader 17 and 3300 fps. With that said the new 53 grain Vmax has a b.c. of .290 and can be launched over 3700 fps with the same accuracy and 36 grains of IMR 4064. Bigger may not be better but it all depends on what you are wanting to do and the twist rate of your rifle.

Staggered long action stock SPF to prdatr.
-
No the easy way to tell is take the rifle out of the stock. If the magazine box is attached to the action it is a staggered feed. If the magazine box stays in the stock it is a center feed. I still have both versions available.

Green stock SPF to kazpilot25
-
OK here is what I had squirreled away. Two on the left are short action center feed stocks $25 for the black one and $35 for the black one with silver webbing. The olive green with black webbing is a long action center feed asking $40 for that one SPF. The one on the right is from a pawn shop donor rifle long action staggered feed it has been used and has some Knicks and scratches in it but nothing real serious. Asking $20 bucks for this one SPF. All prices plus shipping. Interested parties please post in thread which one you want then pm me with shipping and payment info. Thanks.

I rarely get to the valley so shipping works best for me. I might have a staggered feed stock someplace, like I said I've got a few squirled away I will have to go through them and see what I have and list them here.
