  5. The wife and I are wanting to hunt Antelope in New Mexico this year. The more I read the more confused I get on what we need to do as far as being able to hunt. I know there are quite a few of you here on the forum that hunt there regularly. I am trying to figure out where to get a land owner tag, who to contact, best areas to go, that type of thing. All of my online searches end up leading to an outfitter site and I am not really wanting to do that. Not necessarily looking for giants but respectable goats and a good DIY time. Thanks for any help.

Don't have one for a detachable mag in short action.

WTS: Clearing out a few things

Nothing like bringing an old thread back from the dead. I might have a Tikka stock and I am certain i have some savage stocks but you are going to have to be way more specific with the savage stuff. Old 110? staggered feed? New 110 center feed? Detachable magazine?

    300 wsm load development

H4350 is THE powder for the 300WSM. Other powders with similar burn rates will also work well. R17 will probably net you a little more velocity but like others have mentioned not as stable as H4350. R16 would be another good choice. That being said you are getting half inch groups with the load you have found, what more do you want for a hunting rifle? If you do want better groups I would stay away from the ELD-X line of bullets. They are consistently the most inaccurate bullet I have ever tried in multiple calibers. I would go to a Berger or Sierra if you are looking for the best accuracy possible.

    New build actions

By the time you pay your smith to do all of the things you want done on that action you could have bought a custom action. Gone are the days when you could pick up a Rem 700 action for 300 bucks and it made a little sense to start there. I don't know what you paid for yours but these days a bare bones Rem action is over $500 from most places. Defiance Tenacity or other custom actions can be had for right around $950 - $1100 and have all of the features you are after. The major downside to building on a Remington for me is that when its all said and done you still have a Remington and it is only worth Remington value, where as a custom action will always hold a higher value if you were to decide to sell.
  13. Easily formed from multiple cases but Hornady sells .250 Savage brass now. I formed all mine from Lake City Match .308 brass and it has held up and works really well.

Setting kids up for the shot

I have been working with my niece since she was 10. We practiced a lot her first few years shooting from prone with a bi-pod. I had a steel pig silhouette that I would place out in the hills that was painted bright pink or orange that would simulate a real world scenario of shooting out in the field. She would be responsible for finding a suitable shooting position and finding the pig in the scope while I ranged the target and told her the dope she needed to dial. She got to where she was good at it and had no problem finding the pig in the scope. But, a bright pink or orange pig is a far cry from finding a deer in a real world scenario. I would almost always have to help her when the time came to find the deer. It always worked out but it always became a stressful moment when the time came. Fast forward to this year, shes 17 and it was her last youth hunt. I put an arca swiss adapter on my rifle and mounted the rifle to my glassing tri pod. I sat down on the side of the hill locked the rifle in on the deer got out of the way and had her slide in behind it and get comfortable. Boom! One and done 430 yards easy peasy. Makes me wish we were doing it that way from the get go.

    ATF paperwork

Form 5300.38. Since you are renting you will need to provide a copy of the rental agreement as well as property owners information. Takes about a month to hear back from ATF and everything was done over the phone/email. I just got my license moved over to my new shop a couple weeks ago.

    Vortex Optics Truth

The one you are running. The Leupold LRP I think is one of the best scopes made. Light weight, clear, simple to use, and reliable. Its too bad they don't make them any more. The VX5HD is the next step up and an awesome scope that still meets your under 2k criteria.
  22. Never Vortex is the correct decision. Especially when it comes to the Viper series.

    Begara vs. Christensen

I would buy a Tikka T3x lite. Especially if you are just going to shoot factory ammo. Honestly the most accurate little rifles right out of the box nd just as light if not lighter than anything else on the shelf. Spend your extra money on ammo.
