The 270 is relatively flat out to 300 yards. I would zero at 200 and hold a little high at 300. The point being you can hold on the animal out to 300 no problem.

I know what my Ruger can do so what's your point. A Ruger rifle is more than capable to hunt coues with even to 500 yards. What experience or proof if any do you have to prove that a Ruger rifle is less accurate than a Remington or anything else for that matter besides what you may have read online. I am a savage guy personally but I do own Ruger and Remington rifles as well and each and every one is tuned to shoot well beyond 500 yards with ease. Load development and the guy behind the trigger is more important than the brand of rifle.

You need to get out more. If your shooting competition your not using a bought off the store shelf Rifle anyways more than likely every gun on the line has a high quality match barrel installed. Were talking hunting rifles here in which case a Ruger can do anything a Remington can do.

Might also try shooting the tubbs final finish bore system down the barrel to smooth out any imperfections there may be and see if that will reduce the fouling any.

The rings may be made better today but what lapping does is square the rings to the bases and the Rifle so that there is proper contact and alignment with everything. Also nail Polish works wonders for lock tight applications it holds well and you can remove it when you want no problem.

Yes case volume is what you want to check not case weight. You can have two cases weigh way different but have the same internal case volumes. Separate by case volume and your groups will shrink and your extreme spreads and standard deviations will come down. Its worth the extra effort.

4350 should work well in that case as well as that bullet. You shouldn't have a problem finding a recipe it likes.

Just re read this thread and have to argue that the Ruger will shoot just as good as any Remington I have ever seen. Remingtons are fine rifles for sure but they are far from the be all end all of rifles. Just about any rifle on the market today can be made to shoot at least MOA with a good hand load and a simple bed and float job. Besides that the fit and finish of the Ruger I find to be far superior to any Remington.

The 25-06 is a perfect deer cartridge and very effective on elk as well. Relatively light recoil and extremely flat trajectory. I wouldn't hesitate to shoot a deer way past 500 if your capable of making the shot. A 115 Berger bullet at 3100 plus will drop anything you will hunt around here no problem. I shot a coues deer in 2010 with my little 250 savage with the same bullet at 2760 fps at 662 yards and it was just as dead as if I had used a 180 grain bullet from a 300 mag.

Mirage is the best indicator of wind speed out in the field. If its moving up in a 45 degree angle wind speed is 0-5 MPH and if its straight across its 10 plus. Another trick is to pick up some grass hold your arms straight down along your side drop the grass and point to where the grass lands on the ground then guesstimate what angle your arm is in relation to your body and divide that angle by two to reach an estimated wind speed. I read that in a sniper training and tactics manual.

Burris rings would be the way to go for sure but you shouldn't have a problem with bore sighting using the factory mounts and scope unless you are too close or the scope is bad. There should be plenty of adjustment to get on paper at 100 or 200 yards using a factory setup unless there is something really off.

There has been multiple ammunition recalls as of late send it back and get some new stuff those are definitely way to hot and poorly made to boot.

Burris signature zee rings. Hands down the best ring made. They come with plastic inserts that align the scope perfectly and eliminate the need for lapping. Can also get different thickness inserts to adjust the amount of elevation adjustment if need be.

Shoot for group at 200 yards. Berger Bullets tend to need a bit more time to stabilize and groupings at 100 yards can be discouraging but at 200 quite good.

Personally I believe a 223 is more ethical than a bow and arrow any day. With proper bullet choice and shot placement you shouldn't have a problem. With a sharp stick shot from a string even with a perfect shot the animal almost always runs off to die a slower death than a well placed small caliber bullet. Just my opinion.

I have built quite a few savages with Boyds stocks and all of them have been drop in ready to go stocks. The only place you really need to watch is the tang area. Savages prefer their tang to be floated some light sanding may be needed in this area but it is quick and simple. Pillar and glass bed for best results. The light weight laminate from Boyds only weighs 2.5 pounds.

Both are great scopes but I think you get the most bang for your buck with the viper. If I remember right the Nikon has 1/8 clicks while the viper has 1/4 clicks. I much prefer the 1/4 clicks on a hunting rig over the 1/8.

The Amax is what I was referring to. They say not recommended for hunting but I have read they performed very similar to the bergers, since that's not what your after it doesn't matter. Even still a 140 nosler will retain more energy and drift less in the wind over the 130 at extended ranges.

H4831 should also run well in that case. Also the 140 class bullets are just more of a good thing. B.C in the .600s with bergers and hornadys.

If you can crush a aluminum arrow shaft by torqueing a screw driver you are tightening way to much.

A nice compromise is the hornady Amax bullets I can get the 105s to stabalize and shoot really well in my 22" savage with a 9.25 twist. I'm running 42 grains of 4350 in mine with half moa accuracy at 100 yards. I have not yet Chronographed them.

The 06 will definitely get the job done. For long range work your biggest enemy regardless of caliber will be wind. The 06 will drift about 19 inches at 500 and 92 inches at 1000 with a 168 at 2900fps. A 6.5-06 will drift 13 inches at 500 and 63 inches at 1000 with a 140 at 2950 and also hit with about 200 pounds more energy at 1000 over the 30 cal. If you are going to be serious about long range hunting and be ethical pick a caliber and bullet that will get you there flatter faster and with more energy. Just about any 6.5/260 caliber will out shoot the 30-06 at long range.

For no more than 500 yards the 7-08 will do nicely.
