Well with all the talk about all the surrounding units plus the very popular units hunters wait years to draw, I like to get a 6A thread going. I drew another bull tag for this unit again and was successful back in 2010 with a 330'sh bull. I haven't started my scouting yet as to I like to do it closer to the hunt and will be spending a lot of time the next few weeks back in the areas I know very well that have produced a lot of elk for me and my family. I wanted to hear from any other hunters who drew this 'coveted' tag to see how the bulls are looking. I know quite a bit of rain has fallen the last few weeks and I was up at my brother's cabin this past weekend in 5BS and water holes are filling up fast and things are really greening up. I would also like to hear how much more challenging you guys think it will be this year with a ton of tags for the early archery hunt. Where do you guys think the largest bull will be taken? North or South? I have PM'd a few members who have hunted near where I hunt to get information on those areas nearby and I'll be scouting those locations but pretty confident my ace in the hole location will produce again. Maybe we should start a 6A trophy bull contest.. LOL... Looking forward in hearing from you 6A archery elk hunters...

SD, good points you make and the morale to the story you need plan A, B & C. The last time I drew back in 2010 we scouted hard and found a very good spot. We put a lot of time concentrating in this spot to find out the day before the hunt the rancher moved his cattle to pasture a few days before the hunt and our sweet secret spot was getting overrun with cattle. Those of you who our putting in a lot of time scouting and have your areas sort of picked out you may want to talk to any working ranch hands you see and ask them when they move their cattle and where they will be moving them to. I put in for this unit again because I have seen its potential and have had success if you do your homework and hunt smart. There are more variables at play here than just the average Joe hunter messing up your opportunities at tagging a trophy or anything at all. Either way, it is going to be a great hunt and I look forward to some good stories afterwards. SD, would you mind PM'ing me where you went 5 times and could have stalked 5 bulls? j/k...

6ANut... Yeah, no doubt... if we can get the 700+ archers to spread out evenly in the unit it will be an enjoyable hunt for all... LOL! You know they say they can fit the entire world population in Texas so maybe I will not see another hunter during my hunt in 6A... NOT...

Thanks, it must have been its son!... LOL... We took pics of a bull we named the pitchfork as to the horns like the one shown in your pic has that pitchfork look. -

elkslare, nice bull your son harvested, you mind telling what part of the 6A (North or South) it was taken and year? I think I have some pics of that bull while scouting when I had the tag in 2010 (I'll have to dig them up). We did not see him during the hunt but ended up with a nice ~330-340 class bull. If this is the same bull it was in the pines ~3 weeks before the opener and it looks like your son got him in the PJ's. I'm interested in knowing this information as to I drew 6A again and looking at hunting the PJ's for bigger bulls and to get away from other hunters. Just trying to figure out how big of an area these big bulls roam to give me an idea when I'm scouting and see a nice bull in the pines how far they'll roam if I don't see them during the hunt. Also here are some bulls taken from 5BN in 2011 November rifle hunt that I euro/western mounted for them: Enjoy! -
Hey cuz-in-law nice pics! Hopefully I'll have some pics to show soon of my archery bull elk hunt and the boy's (Alec & Logan) junior cow hunt. I have my eyes on a few large bulls that I have found scouting with cousin Aaron. I'll send you some of our scouting pic soon!

This unit used to be really good for Deer back in the late 80's & early 90's. We use to hunt 128th Street south off the Dynamite road towards the McDowell Mtns. This area burned in the mid 90's and alot of homes are now being built in this area. I've seen one of my biggest Mule Deer in there. A couple of years ago while hunting 118th Street north of Dynamite I talked to another bowhunter that seen a nice Coues Deer buck! It must have come down from the Cave Creek/Seven Springs area. We took a few deer back then. I've talked to the Game Warden for this area and he recommended hunting the McDowells. He told me there are some very big ones in there if you are willing to hike several miles. There is a big valley back in there in which the G&F just recently (a couple of years ago) built a water hole/catchment. He said that he's counted at least 50 deer a day water or frequent this area. I usually hit this area once or twice now for a quick day hunt. If you hunt this area and not willing to hike alot I would recommend hunting near the golf courses (Troon North). Just not too close!

My cousin took a big one last weekend. I heard this from my Uncle. He said it was a 7X8. They were hunting near Patagonia I think.....
