Here's a copy and paste of the story from his face book page. Grizzly 10/1/16 Hello everyone. Thought I should share yesterday morning's Grizzly incident. I took an early morning hike in the Madison valley to scout for elk. Knowing that bears are common throughout southwest Montana, I hollered out "hey bear" about every 30 seconds so as to not surprise any bears along the trail. About three miles in, I stepped out into an open meadow and hollered again. A few more steps and I spotted a sow Grizzly bear with cubs on the trail at the upper end of the meadow. The sow saw me right away and they ran a short distance up the trail. But suddenly she turned and charged straight my way. I yelled a number of times so she knew I was human and would hopefully turn back. No such luck. Within a couple seconds, she was nearly on me. I gave her a full charge of bear spray at about 25 feet. Her momentum carried her right through the orange mist and on me. I went to my face in the dirt and wrapped my arms around the back of my neck for protection. She was on top of me biting my arms, shoulders and backpack. The force of each bite was like a sledge hammer with teeth. She would stop for a few seconds and then bite again. Over and over. After a couple minutes, but what seemed an eternity, she disappeared. Stunned, I carefully picked myself up. I was alive and able to walk so I headed back down the trail towards the truck 3 miles below. As I half hiked and jogged down the trail, I glanced at my injuries. I had numerous bleeding puncture wounds on my arms and shoulder but I knew I would survive and thanked god for getting me through this. I hoped the bleeding wasn't too significant. I really didn't want to stop to dress the wounds. I wanted to keep moving and put distance between us. About five or ten minutes down the trail, I heard a sound and turned to find the Griz bearing down at 30 feet. She either followed me back down the trail or cut through the trees and randomly came out on the trail right behind me. Whatever the case, she was instantly on me again. I couldn't believe this was happening a second time! Why me? I was so lucky the first attack, but now I questioned if I would survive the second. Again I protected the back of my neck with my arms, and kept tight against the ground to protect my face and eyes. She slammed down on top of me and bit my shoulder and arms again. One bite on my forearm went through to the bone and I heard a crunch. My hand instantly went numb and wrist and fingers were limp and unusable. The sudden pain made me flinch and gasp for breath. The sound triggered a frenzy of bites to my shoulder and upper back. I knew I couldn't move or make a sound again so I huddled motionless. Another couple bites to my head and a gash opened above my ear, nearly scalping me. The blood gushed over my face and into my eyes. I didn't move. I thought this was the end. She would eventually hit an artery in my neck and I would bleed out in the trail... But I knew that moving would trigger more bites so a laid motionless hoping it would end. She suddenly stopped and just stood on top of me. I will never forgot that brief moment. Dead silence except for the sound of her heavy breathing and sniffing. I could feel and her breath on the back of my neck, just inches away. I could feel her front claws digging into my lower back below my backpack where she stood. I could smell the terrible pungent odor she emitted. For thirty seconds she stood there crushing me. My chest was smashed into the ground and forehead in the dirt. When would the next onslaught of biting began. I didn't move. And then she was gone. I tried to peek out without moving but my eyes were full of blood and I couldn't see. I thought that if she came back a third time I would be dead, so I had to do something. Staying in position on the ground, I slowly reached under my chest to grab at the pistol I was unable to get to earlier. I felt I needed something to save my life. The pistol wasn't there. I groped around again but nothing. I wiped the blood from one eye and looked around. No bear. The pistol and holster were lying five feet to my left. The bear's ferocious bites and pulling had ripped the straps from the pack and the holster attached to it. Now trashed, that backpack may have helped prevent many more serious bites on my back and spine. I picked everything up and moved down the trail again. I couldn't believe I had survived two attacks. Double lucky! Blood was still dripping off my head and both elbows and my shirt was soaked to the waist and into my pants. But a quick assessment told me I could make it another 45 minutes to the truck without losing too much blood. I continued the jog just wanting to put more distance between that sow and I. At the trailhead was one other vehicle. I really hoped that person didn't run into the same bear. I snapped a couple quick photos and a video of my wounds, laid some jackets over the truck seat and headed for town. I stopped a rancher along the way and asked him to make a call to the hospital. When I got into cell service, I made a quick call to my girlfriend to ask how her morning was going, before freaking her out and asking her to bring me a change of clean clothes to the hospital. Another call to 911 and I gave the operator a quick run down of my injuries and asked her to call the hospital and give them a heads up that I was ten minutes out. Moments later I was met at the front door by the doctor, nurse and an officer. I had to ask the officer to open the door, put my truck in park, and unbuckle my seat belt. My left arm was useless. He was impressed I had taken the effort to buckle. Once inside, the x-rays revealed only a chip out of the ulna bone in my forearm. Following was eight hours of stitching to put me back together. Most were arm and shoulder punctures and tears. A 5" gash along the side of my head will leave a nasty scar, but I'm hoping my balding doesn't come on too quickly and leave that one exposed. And finally, this morning, numerous deep bruises and scrapes are showing up from the bites that didn't quite break the skin. Dark bruising in the shape of claws, line across my lower back and butt where the bear stood on me. Also a few more chest bruises and facial abrasions from being smashed and slammed into the ground. Not my best day, but I'm alive. So thankful I'm here to share with all of you. In a couple weeks I will have to clean out the truck a little better. My girlfriend says it looks like I had gutted an elk in the drivers seat. Todd Orr. Skyblade Knives.
  4. Dang it! Congrats though! Didn't expect it to stay up until my late rifle hunt anyway

    Unit 27 Tag ....

I've ran into a few guys looking for lost Bulls off the 25 road. Don't think any were in the last 48 though.

    Unit 27

I guess that's good to hear. Since I'm new to 27 I've felt like I'm just doing something wrong at times. It hasn't been all bad though because there have been days I am in elk most the day. I've learned this year that knowing a unit is a huge advantage and I'll stick to my regular places from now on most likely. The grass isn't always greener.

    Unit 27

Found a huge shed yesterday before I had to come back to town to work a couple hours. On the road back up now to hopefully make something happen.
  8. Best I could get before he had enough. It was difficult to smack him with a stick to keep him curled up and snap a picture through the scope.
  9. I've come across quite a few snakes and I don't think they're as scary as people make them out to be. Most of the time they have let me know they are there. I use to kill them all but I think I've gotten soft. I would have like to keep the skin and rattle from the one in the picture but set up a photo shoot instead. I was trying to set up the sporting scope to get a phone skope picture but he wouldn't cooperate.
  10. Found this one in the road the week before Labor Day.

    Damned coons

Not very often at all. Mostly pigeons, rats, snakes and a squirrel here and there.

    Unit 27

I've been getting into elk the last couple days. Friday was rough and I never heard a bugle or seen an elk. I've never hunted the unit before and didn't scout it so I've pretty much been using this first week as my scouting. Thursday night before the hunt I was woke up by bugles they screaming in camp at 130AM and they were still screaming when I left camp at 330AM but then they shut off. Saturday morning I spent checking waters and glassed up an average bull with a Few cows. Saturday night I had Bulls start screaming about an hour before dark but didn't get a look at them before dark. Sunday morning we were in bugles until noon but only got to see the satellites. Sunday night a good bull came out of his bed screaming on a trail just out of range and he didn't have any cows. I've found 16 wallows so far. Never seen so many wallows before. Haven't seen any cows yet really. It can only get better!

    Is this legal? Hypothetical Situation

[quote name="hoghntr" post="676429" timestamp="1473290021 But seriously in areas like 11m and 6a I was hunting in the area at 11m we're guys that had 6a tags were camped in 11 m because there was no designated camp areas in the edge of 6a where they wanted to hunt and I'm just wondering how Game and Fish officers feel when there's an animal hanging in your camp with a tag from the unit next door??? We hunt deer along the road that splits two units and will usually camp in the unit we aren't hunting (about 50 yards from our unit) We have had G&F check us a couple times with out a problem so far. We always tell them before they look at our tags that we are hunting the other side of the road and just camping here so they know we understand where the boundary is.

    Is this legal? Hypothetical Situation

I would like to see that too! I know there's some nice canyon creeks that act as the border for two units. I believe the actual border would be center of the creek bed but i could be wrong. It would be nice if I could glass the side of the canyon that is in my unit while sitting in the other unit and be able to pull the trigger. One year we followed bugles into one of these canyons and caught up to a bull standing in the middle of a creek that was a border. Would that bull have been legal to shoot?

Seen this on the map but didn't stop in there to see if it's still open or if they have much as far as archery. It's listed online that they have "archery supplies/ bow shop" The Tackle Shop 42634 Hwy 191 Alpine, AZ 85920-5300 United States +1 (928) 339-4338 This is my first time hunting there and it's going to be a huge difference from hunting out of our happy jack cabin. Pretty over whelming with how much elk country there is up there.

    Unit 27

I was there last weekend and talked to the alpine village RV park. They offer showers for $6 and said they have towels if you forget yours. They also have a place to do laundry but I forgot the price on that. It was located on the highway heading towards New Mexico but before you leave town. I believe that's the 180 highway.

    Unit 27 storage?

Hey everyone, I am heading up to look around tomorrow for my upcoming archery hunt and was wondering if anyone that lives around alpine or anywhere in 27 that wouldn't mind if I left a side by side in their yard until I come back up so I don't have to haul it home. It's not a huge deal to bring it home but I have a 4.8 motor in my Chevy and it really struggles going up the mountains and I will be making a few trips back and forth over the next few weeks. My plans right now are to head up tomorrow, 8/25 and come home Sunday 8/28 which is when I would need to drop it off. I expect to be back up 9/2 to pick it up for the weekend and if you're willing, leave it one more time on 9/4 until I pick it back up 9/9. After that I will be setting a camp and sticking it out through the hunt and wouldn't need to bug you again. I'm not looking for garage parking or even covered parking. I was just hoping if you're there full time and have the room for it with out it being in your way while its there it could work. Also, I have to bring the trailer home because i will have to load my camping gear onto it before going back up the final time and I sometimes have to use it for work during the week. I know this is late notice but I wasn't sure if I would be hauling it up there tomorrow because my buddy had the trailer in kaibab but he returned tonight. If I can't work something out with someone from here I was planning on looking for a storage lot to talk to when I get up there tomorrow if there are any. If you know of any storage places maybe you could shoot me a name of the place so I can try to look them up and give them a call on the way. Sorry about the long winded post but I really wasn't sure I wanted to even post this. So if anyone is willing to help me out just PM me or post here and I can shoot you my number or vise versa. Guy Mauro
