    Heli Hog Hunting

If you call it hunting or predator control you have to love the state of Texas. Imagine trying to do this PA or NY or even in AZ. Its not lame, it is all about private property rights, gun rights and the freedom to find a solution to a serious problem without having the goverment or some lefty minded individual tell you, you can't do that.

    Quail hatch has started

I saw some more walnuts week ago or so and finally managed to take a photo. I also saw some others in a nearby neighborhood. I do not believe they are a true "second" hatch but most likely mama lost the first hatch to another Urban Predator such as this creture that has been living in the back yard.
  9. Urban hatch has begun. Wife and I observed three hatches in the neighborhood this last weekend, with one hatch containing 12 "walnuts", of which our dog dined on one of them. No luck on getting a photo but we will keep trying.

    Smoking trout

I love smoked trout. It is the only way to eat the new stockers G&F places in the lakes. I have found the most important step is to brine the trout for 24hours. Leave the skin and head on. Do a low temp smoke for 4-5 hours. I have used hickory, maple, apple, and even mesquite and enjoyed all of them. It is a matter of taste.

    Quail hatch has started

More urban predation... Pool Baracuda ate one of little guys. Wite wing dove also fell prey to something, my bet is a hawk.

    Quail hatch has started

I was in the front yard cleaning up the palo verde flowers and I see my neighbor chasing a chick and catching one with a big gulp cup! Urban predator strikes again. An hour late I catch three of the little guys coming thru the back gate. If this is the same clutch, then the survival rate is down to 25%. I was finally able to take some photos. looks like a male?

    Quail hatch has started

I actually believe it will be an average hatch. We had early green up but with no follow thru. The problem is no cover for the chicks or abundant food will lead to high predation. The hatch I refered to the other day is down to 8 from 12, and yes our new dog this year ate another one.

A young deer with great genetics. He is pushing the 110 mark. If you need some help chasing him, I would be glad to deal.

    12x50 EL

Spent another week searching for the monster and using the 12's...no luck and no 10's. What I have noticed is that after spending hours behind the 15's my eyes are slow to adjust back to normal. I pull away from the glasses to scan close with my naked eye and I have a difficult time adjusting. Part of it is your vision gets worse with old age and I believe part is the 15 power. The 12's are much easier on your eyes and I was able to scan close without eye focus problems. I have no issue glassing or scanning with them w/o a tripod, same as the 10's. If you spot these little guys, the first thing you do is break out the tripod anyways. No regrets pitching the 15's and those of you who don't think they are worth it, you're in denial.

    12x50 EL

I recently used them on a hunt and they are unbelievable. I carried them but used a tripod given every chance. After using the 15's for so long it took me some time to get used to them. You give up power but the extra field of view is indispensable. My glasses consisted of 10x50SLC around my neck with 15's and spotter in my backpack. The 10's are now retired, the 15's were traded in and my backpack is so much lighter.
  20. I have prepared and eaten dove many ways some good, most not so good. Best way I found to appreciate a bunch of dove is to make a Pâté out of them. Google a recepe and serve with saltine crackers, everyone will enjoy

Try this spot, there have been many bucks taken around here. The reality is that you still have to find them no matter how detailed a lead is!

Guess the score contest - April 2011

Good questions...I am an official measurer and I will try and answer your questions. To be considered a normal point, the tine has to come off the top of the main beam and be in the normal position for that species. It's hard to see in the photo, so it's hard for me to judge which one is the normal point, but I am assuming that he thought the slightly shorter tine was in a more normal position and looked most appropriate to the be the normal tine. Your other question about the right not being considered a 4 point is a good one and I actually think he made a mistake on the scoresheet. I have a copy of the scoresheet and it states that he thought the tine on the right side that occurs between the g-3 and the tip of the beam is a normal point. Which means he should have had it in the right side column, but instead it looks like he entered it on the left side column on the score sheet. Another question that I can't answer, is where is the 3 5/8 nontypical point on the right side? He has listed two nontyp points, but I only see one...maybe the pics don't show it? does anyone else see it? Thanks, helps for this case but each is different. Seems it would score higher if it was a 4-point because of a better wrap.
