Those 3rds are killer
-
Anybody else see this in the recommendations for next year? Has anyone asked about it yet at an open house? I assume they decided enough elk had been taken off the mountain to let the aspens recover. Either that or USFW decided to use wolves or saber tooth tiger or some other introduced predator.
-
They tried that I think but problem was those guys were hunting deer and buffalo on a once in a lifetime hunt. Nobody wants to pop a cow elk during something like that.
-
That whole thought process was around the idea that hunting disrupts the antelope rut, correct? Maybe more pregnant does equals more fawns. I wonder if they have seen success with the expirements they did in other units recently.

Any body heard from this guy? I ran into him a week back and he was licking his wounds from a nasty fall. I gave him my number and told him to call if he needed help. I am hoping he tagged out, and if not, that he knew I was for real. The guy was real deal blue collar, works for a concrete company, no guide just a patchwork of buddies to help him out from day to day. I am pulling for him.

Yeah the ram he is hunting is right on top of picketpost mountain. It's really nasty up there. Hoping he got it done.

Tell us what units you like to hunt. Got a pig tag for next month?

So did anyone see what actually got approved in the commission meeting? I had to work that weekend and missed it. Hopping they didn't leave 22 with the early hunt structure that was recommended. The way it was written up 22S Muzzleloader would be before the 22 early archery hunt, but the 22N early rifle tag would overlap the archery hunt by 1 week. That would be a disaster in my mind.

I never stalk from the bottom up. Always come down on them.

Awesome buck!

Some pretty good sword tines in that area

Good for you friend! Keep em coming! What happened to the husband?

I don't understand why he is holding them so close to his body. Makes the guy look like a giant.

As hunters, I think we should first be conservationists. Even Aldo Leopold said that it was a mistake to eradicate wolves and that when we did part of the mountain would die with them. To say that every lion should be killed is ignorant and to believe that if it happened that our hills would suddenly become the garden of eden is also fallacy. Predators should be managed like every other big game animal. So for guys who are good at killing lions and do so at close range where evidence of sex is apparent, it makes sense to me that they would let females walk. But for us opportunists looking through glass from long distance, that's not realistic. The lions seem to be self sustaining pretty well so I would say the model works and good on the houndsmen who self police and don't routinely kill females.

It's hard not to wonder if hunters would do the same if the shoe was on the other foot.

Yeah, reading the notes, it seems like they really just want to wipe out the elk north of the Colorado. They know that people from the valley won't go there for such a limited hunt and that out of state prices are too steep for the folks who live near the area.

Thanks TM, the Mesa open house is tomorrow. I plan to attend and also plan to be one of 3 guys that do, as is typical.

Not sure what you were saying there. You are correct I misread the regs and 4 of the cow hunts are still there, just with fewer tags. Any elk tags changed to bull tags. They eliminated the concurrent non-Peaks hunt. Too bad.[/quote. I think people with ALOT of points saved up would be less than satisfied compared to other units. Uh, yeah. In that unit 350 is a miracle. Pretty much mid range elk there, like lots of other places in AZ now unfortunately. Our "mid-tier" units are quickly becoming comparable to Idaho trophy quality.

Keith this is awesome! I would really like to make it this year. The 10th is booked so maybe the 20th?

All the hunts in the state start based on the order of the Friday that the hunt opens on. For instance the early archery hunt starts on the 37th Friday of the year. Late rifle bull starts on the 45th Friday I believe. Meaning that because this year New Years Day was a Friday, all the hunts were the earliest they could possibly be. Next year, New Years is on Sunday, therefore everything is 6 days later.

The recommendations for next year show only bull tags for the Peaks. In the past there were cow tags and any elk tags. I am not sure why they would put bull only tags up there if they are trying to reduce the herd eating the aspens, which was the purpose for creating the hunt. BUT, if you want an elk tag on the Kaibab there are plenty of those.
