Looks like a great day. Congrats to the hunter. At 33 yrs old I am still looking forward to the day that I get to see my dad put one in the dirt. He's been pretty selfless over the years.

Find water hole with tracks, follow tracks, shoot elk. Pretty much how this one works. But with all the bluebird weather we have been having, there will still be tons of elk in the pines so check there too.

Mike I was thinking about trying to put a crew together to help on one of those wounded warrior hunts I'm no expert but I've killed a few and helped on quite a few others what do you think ?

Joe is corrupt. He is all talk and hasn't done squat to make this county but has cost taxpayers millions in his feuds with county supervisors. Screw him and his bunch of hang on chroneys. He'd fit in just fine in Washington.

I would venture a guess at a few things: 1. This was a mule deer hunt (maybe he said that, I can't remember after reading all these dang reply's) 2. These big numbers of deer were probably at mid mountain elevations (not the flats and not the peaks). 3. All the guys you saw who had killed baby bucks were hunting the same country you were. If any of that was correct: Here is the solution, if you are seeing tons of deer and very few bucks and almost all of them are still with their mommy, you are hunting in the nursery. I used to do this a lot. I mean it makes sense to hunt where there are lots of deer right? But mature bucks don't hang out with tons of does. They go to off by themselves or with other mature bucks and hide for 75% of the year. Anyway, maybe that could help you see some bigger deer. And who knows, maybe I am way off. In which case, I am used to it.

In regard to elk, I'd be trying to get out of the pines for a late hunt. But that's just me.

These hunts are a blast. My first hunting experiences were plugging cows on sept/oct.

I agree with your statement about what would happen if tags were not for designated areas. It decreases the population control of specific herds. However, I would suggest that the elk draw was moved earlier to provide more time before antelope and archery elk hunts, and more importantly it put AZ at the front end of big game draw cycles for western states. This means that NR who apply for multiple states do not wait to see if they drew other states before choosing whether or not to apply for AZ tags. With an early draw people are forced to apply for AZ and then wait to decide about other states.
