Verify via CVA website that your Optima's breech plug is rated for BH. My older CVA is not. -
Bipod included?

Guys chill. Those pics are his to do with as he wishes. And I for one, know what a stand up dude Sir Royal is. There is nothing he wouldn't do to help a kid or another hunter. Thanks for posting, they were fun to look at while they lasted. Enough said, nothing else worthwhile will come from this thread.

Just to be contradictory. . . In a spotting scope I want all the x I can get. Especially when looking at goats or coues with little racks.

I think I have decided to purchase a new compact rifle for my wife to use on her elk hunt this year and for my children to use in the future. I have looked at the Remington 700 compact, Ruger American Compact, and Savage Axis Youth. I think I am sold on the 7mm-08 caliber so that has ruled out some of the other compact rifles. I have 0 experience with the Axis rifles, but I have heard negative things about non-accutrigger Savages. I like the 700 but it is quite a bit more expensive than the other two, is it worth it? I have not shot the Ruger American either, any thoughts? The intent is that this year the rifle will get topped with a Vortex Crossfire, and remain otherwise pretty much stock. In the future I can start swapping components to build it into a more custom rig, but atleast for the immediate future, its going to have to stay about like it is. Any thoughts or suggestions?

3" Groups at 100 yds with a scattergun is pretty impressive. I am excited to tag along with you on your adventure from behind my keyboard. Good luck!

Agreed about shooting what you like. In regards to scores, remember: prong length is only one measurement, just like length, but shorter. Mass gets measured 4x. High prongs is just as big of a deal as long prongs. Without more pics of the second buck it's tough to know how good he really is, but it appears his mass is at best equal to the first buck, horns are definitely shorter, but prongs are longer. I doubt that he can get to the overall score the first buck can, but he might. Good news is with limited tags, you should have a reasonable chance at some top bucks during your hunt.

Yeah the first buck is solid. His mass above the prong is exceptional and those high prongs are going to drive that score up. How many tags before your hunt?

Saturday I weighed at a new low for the year, 184.7, down from 223 at peak.

Happy birthday my friend. You are a great example to all of us. I wish you the best of luck on all your upcoming adventures!

That's a solid buck and my 10 second evaluation has him easily beyond 75. Keep this in mind: ears are roughly 6 inches long, eyes are 1.5"-2" wide. You need a buck that has prongs 1-2" above the ear, twice the width of his eye at the base and with prongs at least an inch longer than his ear measured from the back of the horn. That kind of analysis takes more than one angle and some time. But this is a good buck you should keep track of.

I shot a hole in the wall of my man cave a couple years back. But in 18 years of shooting in my back yard I have put 2 arrows into the block wall. Shooting in those conditions is good training. Pay attention to where you point your arrow at all times. I never point my bow up when drawing. I come up from the ground. My bow never points above my chest level.
