    Elk Rut Update

I’ve had some experience on hunts where bulls were rutting harder in mid October than late September.

    Elk Rut Update

I don’t know if it is a terrible rut or if it is just a late rut. Time will tell. It could still get really good for the rifle / muzzy / youth hunts. I am hoping my daughters cow hunt is epic!

Worst hunt ever. 4B is cooked
  6. After 9 days chasing elk in tons of different terrain and weather, gotta say, there are my favorite boots ever. Good support, light, water proof, and super comfortable. Just have to be careful with vibrancy soles on wet rocks.

    Guide Hunter Weems Raided?

I’m sure glad all of these resources funded by license and tag sales are being used to keep trail cameras out of the woods. Seems like a prudent use of our conservation dollars. Thank goodness our wise commission created this rule so we could commit all of this effort to preventing anyone from taking a picture of a deer. I can definitely see how this makes an huge impact on wildlife conservation. (Typed with sarcasm font)

  10. Zamberlan Thunder Pro GTX is a decent compromise between weight and support. I like mine so far, only a couple months into them.

Champ and Crossbow Permit Proposed Changes

If you read the new rule, someone who is applying for a crossbow permit now has to go see a specialist, who performs a function test and writes a “narrative” justifying his professional assesment, that then must be delivered in person or via mail to a dept office and the process has to be renewed every year. Anybody scheduled an appointment with a specialist lately? 6-9 months is the norm unless there is an acute injury. Ever try it at the VA? Double that. Oh yeah, gotta pay for appointment too. If he is a CHAMP holder, repeat that same process for the CHAMP application. Then the applicant will have to find a crossbow, remove the optics, purchase a 1x optic (I think there is 1 on the market right now) and reattach it and resight. Meanwhile, they still have to deal with whatever injury or illness qualifies them for the permit in the first place. The commission can pat themselves on the back all they want for a good compromise and I am sure they will sleep just fine. The flat brimmed hunting bro’s can enjoy their otc archery for a couple more years and the influencers can keep their likes up until it’s overrun. A few abusers will decide the extra headache isn’t worth the hassle anymore. Many of them will write the narrative themself and still get their permit signed by their buddy who is an ortho. And the people who this whole system was created for? They’ll either decide that all these extra hurdles aren’t worth it or aren’t feasible with their daily life that already includes way more PIA factor than most of us even bother to consider, or a few of the really resilient ones who are at a good place in their life and have the means will dip duck dive dodge duck all the wrenches that keep getting thrown at them. Good job everybody, way to go.

    WTB Garmin inreach mini

The ability to hook your inreach to your pack in full view of the sky to receive messages is a pretty nice advantage. As mentioned the satellite messages can only be received on a phone when it has a clear view from the ground to the satellite. Pockets, packs, ground blinds all will interfere with message upload / download. I would clip my inreach to the edge of a blind where the antenna had view of the sky but the screen faced into the blind. Its a little bit more flexible and does conserve battery life on the phone.

    Missing person near Heber/Overgaard

With the number of people out over the weekend they ought to find his vehicle. I know the boys and I are going to do what we can and start checking side roads.
