Not sure when this happened but AZGFD changed the policy probably 5 years ago and no longer allows anyone to receive more than one tag per species / year.

Well it’s a bit of a black box that does not have a great deal of transparency, which should be addressed. Again, accountability is good. But, the way I have experienced this, is that the charity keeps a file of eligible program participants and their preferences (elk, mule deer, etc) and endorsements (crossbow, CHAMP, etc) abilities, along with a list of tags they have received. Once they have a tag they compare it to their list of participants and start making calls. Most of the tags I have seen distributed were on very short notice, often less than a week. So the charity is trying to balance the needs of participants with their capabilities, their availability and their past hunts. So this means those who have the means to hire help, the availability availability to go at a moments notice and / or the ability to hunt on their own may receive more tags than those who are less available or less capable. It’s certainly not perfect, nor precise. But if you see a single person receive more tags than another it could be for one of many reasons.

One of the more thoughtful interactions I have had here. Thanks.

I guess you could say that broadly targeting groups of people, who are already experiencing some pretty shitty circumstances with limited anecdotal evidence, is a pet peeve of mine. Not sure if you saw the original post, but the OP was asking specifically about a youth javelina tag, which he cannot return in the manor you suggested. Seems like there is an axe to grind here. If you have a specific situation you are unhappy with maybe you can address that situation directly with those involved or the department. There is a lot that goes into these programs that is not seen through the public lens and understanding the entire process may be insightful.

Accountability is always a good thing. Publicly broadcasting hearsay out of jealousy is nonsense.

Please tell me more about what I should or shouldn’t think. While you’re at it go ahead and provide evidence to support your claims. Or, take the easy way out and continue to slander broad groups of charities selflessly serving others. A lot of sour grapes over a youth javelina tag.

This doesn't look good.

It was removed from the agenda.

Great deal. These should not last long

Well this got off track. But, it seems like there has been a pattern of this stuff in that area. I am glad the commission is coming down harder than they did in the past.

My bad 🤔

Couple more Heber poachers going down at today’s commission meeting. Killed a buck in 3C hauled it to 4B and took pics. 5 year bans. Brothers named Porter. Couple months ago there were a couple others who got busted for poaching elk. Tenney and Owens.

Antelope 19A Archery Hunt looking for a decoy
Flatlander replied to andrewmilich's topic in Antelope Hunting
Back in that time period there were two hunts with 60ish tags each. The unit was also much larger. Half that stuff is houses now. -

I’m probably the worst guy to offer advice because I don’t archery deer hunt a lot. But I can share some things I have experienced. Deer are where you find them. I haven’t found any rhyme or reason to when they are in certain areas for most of the state. Early season coues tend to keep a pretty tight program and don’t travel a lot. If you can find them scouting good chance you will turn them back up if you are patient. Mule deer are kind of nomads, tougher to pattern in my experience. Which isn’t a lot in August. Most the August hunts for mule deer are higher elevation and less glassable. If I can’t glass I don’t really know how to hunt, so haven’t done much of that. The simple fact is that this time of year in AZ if there is no water, there will be no wildlife. So figuring that out is pretty important.

That looked rough! Prayers for a full recovery!

I’m good for a solid 3-4 minutes

Cheap camo. If you can buy once cry once on a coat that is nicer that’s a good investment, but kind of depends on how fast they grow. My kids wore a lot of camo to school or not hunting to get more use out of it. They also wore a lot of regular clothes hunting.

Self preservation. Take away someone else’s opportunity to save mine.

And there are guys on here who do not hunt with crossbows who see this effort as an uneducated and unnecessary solution to a problem that is poorly defined and even more poorly understood, even if it does not directly impact them. Always crazy to me when a bunch of self-identified “conservatives” start chomping at the bit for a bunch of extra government regulation from people who neither understand what they are talking about nor have to live with the consequences. 🤯

What it all comes down to is a bunch of guys who hunt with compound bows trying to preserve their opportunity at the expense of others. It’s just self preservation and jealousy.
