Need Glassers in unit 22 tonight & tomorrow morning

I don’t think anybody has a problem with choosing to hunt that way. What does bug me is when grown men and women feel like they have to poo poo the way someone hunted in a story they chose to share with the whole site, just because it isn’t exactly the flavor of hunting they prefer. Imagine if some dude came on here and said how stupid you were for hunting 1:1 with your grandson. What if long range guys came on here and told guys that shoot deer at 200 yds that their way of hunting was inferior or lame or whatever. Why do people find it necessary to come gripe about how someone else chooses to hunt. What if guys who shoot dinks came and bitched about guys shooting bucks that are “too big”. I just don’t get why people feel compelled to come on a site, read someone else’s story and then complain about it as if it will somehow cause everyone else to have some revelation about the enlightened form of hunting. It would be super cool if people were just like.. “Great buck, congrats!”

    Frustrated newbie seeking advice

Try to stay 400ish yards min away from where you think deer will be. North slopes are where bucks will bed for shade. But don’t overlook the yellow grass for just finding deer. I’ve seen deer bed within 200 yds of water. And on the same hunt I have seen deer walk over a mile everyday for water. Stick with it.

    Crown King Fire

Maybe they thought the risk was too high to let it go another year. Definitely seems like there are far fewer prescribed burns this year. If indeed this was a Rx burn this would be the first I have seen or heard of.

Pretty easy to keep that to yourself. All the dude asked was if anyone wanted to help. You could have simply done nothing and contributed more than being a critical naysayer.

Nobody asked for your .02. If you dont want to help it’s pretty easy to scroll on by.
  14. All my recent hunts I didn’t even want to mess with it. Even on my Idaho moose hunt last year when it was in the low 20’s my sleeping bag was much more appealing than a campfire.

    Bubba Strikes Again

It’s been a busy fall for our family with a bison hunt, MT elk and AZ early rifle bull hunts all in the books. Hunter was next up with a Kaibab youth tag in his pocket. Due to less accountability with online school he found himself making up assignments instead of hunting on opening day. Mom was merciful and let him hunt after his assignments were made up. We arrived late Saturday. From past experience and lots of driving 67 in the dark going/coming from bison camp we knew they were stacked up in the burned areas. So we literally plopped down a tent right next to the highway and grabbed a few hours of sleep before the alarm went off early Saturday. About 5 minutes after we left camp Hunter spotted some deer feeding in front of us. He quickly setup and fired a shot and MISSED at the startling distance of 30 yds. He looked straight at me and said “I was right on her shoulder, if I missed the scope is messed up.” Almost word for word something he heard on MeatEater this week. We looked but it was a clean miss. Within 30 minutes we found a small group feeding down the ridge from us. This time there was a little more breathing room between us to setup the shot. He had to stand because of brush. We got the triclawps under the foregrip and the Bogpod under the butt. He was steady and told me he was ready to squeeze. At the crack she lurched forward and then stumbled two steps before piling up behind a log. Hunter had filled his second tag in two days with his little brother and I both by his side. At 267 yds he couldn’t have placed the shot any better if he did it by hand. We spent the rest of the day scouting for Nash’s 12AW late hunt, admiring the fall colors and bemoaning the fire damage. As I reflected on this in a way only Father’s do, I realized how far he (and I) have come. Which then also made me consider what heights he might yet achieve. We did this hunt two years ago when he was just 10. He was freshly diagnosed with CMT, hyper-mobility and bilateral hip dysplasia. It was between the first and second reconstructive hip surgery. It was a year I had waited my entire life for, a year of first hunting expeditions, but had turned into a year of doctors, surgeries, therapy and tears; both his and mine. At that time it felt like a monumental effort just to fill that tag. This year, it was a layup, probably too easy for him. He found his own deer, dialed his own scope, called the hit and navigated his own way back to the truck. I wish the me now could go tell the me of 2018 that it’s going to be ok. You and he can do this. My buttons were all busted on Saturday from puffing out my chest. One more Bab trip for our crew left this year.

Good luck on the early hunt. Find water, find bucks.

    The Draw

Dude just shoot whatever you shoot for elk. Or else practice and master that lever gun before you hunt with it. I’ve known (and seen first hand) several guys get cute with weapon choice for buff hunts and it cost them. One guy tried to fire his 45-70 5x with the safety on before switching guns and doing the same thing with it before ultimately shooting a bull o his cow hunt.

    Quiet on the Kaibab

The GCNP management plan for Bison that I saw did not call for elimination of bison, just reduction (albeit significant) from current levels. The GCNP is within the historical range of the bison, at the very southern end. But without any predators, there really isn't any other way to reduce herd numbers. This is much better than turning wolves or grizzlies loose up there so that in 20 years someone can make a documentary about how alpha predators are saving the planet. In terms of the Condors, that's a great success story that highlights the ability of sportsmen to proactively and voluntarily engage in conservation measures. Restoring a critical population of a species on the extreme brink of extinction while maintaining access for hunting, fishing and camping is a success for multiple use management. If it was up to the enviro groups they would use the ESA to lock us out of every acre of public lands in the country. The response from sportsmen has taken that card out of play for them.
