I actually think this has turned out really well for the unit’s they have done it in. This year in 3C, the rifle hunt had very little rut action but hunter’s tagged some nice bulls in prerut patterns and away from cows. The archery hunters I know had a pretty dang amazing rut experience.

Congrats on a great time with the boys! That buck is stellar and would be a no brained on any hunt for me.

Congratulations on a job well done!

Eh, guess that’s ok.

Anyone know the family washed away in Tonto Basin?

On Saturday they were optimistic about a location that the dogs hit on toward the end of the day. I haven’t heard anything since so I assume that’s been cleared. We spoke with both Grandfather’s while we were there. They were very kind and grateful. But you can see in their eyes how heart broken they are. I haven’t been back since then. Not sure when I will make it back. It’s harder than it seems like it ought to be. if anyone is headed up I would recommend starting at the lake from orange peel and working up from there. Kayaks or canoes are helpful. I don’t see much value in the drone footage. -
So the last one for 2 weeks?

I am headed up with a couple others tomorrow. Planning on bringing kayaks. If anyone can join up it would be cool to have a cwt group of folks combining efforts whether it is on the ground or on the water. 8:00 AM at the Bar X crossing. I will have my CWT hoodie on. If you want to text me to coordinate here is my cell 480 266 4811 -
Shot a few. There were also quail out there and a few ducks. Fun morning.

Another day, another 8 heart wrenching hours in the water picking through debris piles and beaver dams with family members, volunteers and search crews. I will say this, the lack of leadership and coordination from GCSO is appalling. With the manpower and resources that have shown up, I cannot believe that there is zero cooperation between their incident command and the “church people” as they referred to the civilian volunteers. I spent the afternoon searching with a rescue team that had come up from a privaye entity who had provided the team and equipment at their own expense, and when they called in to GCSO to get briefed and join the operation they were told to report to the civilian “incident command” (which is a food tent and parking lot, there is no civilian incident command). So this trained search and rescue squad just headed out on their own with no briefing, no information, nothing. The wasted opportunity is sickening. -

I think everyone is frustrated, tired, cold and depressed about this tragedy. I am sure this is the sheriff’s worst nightmare just like it is the families. -

Just got back from searching. Tonto Creek is running about at the level that the Salt River does in the summer mostly shallow but some portions are over 6’ deep. The current is strong. They found some clothing near the crossing where they got stuck, but no other sign of the girl. I am sure she is still submerged in a snag somewhere. I spent almost all my time wading the river checking snags. It’s a sickening feeling every time you reach under water to feel around... hoping you don’t find what you are looking for. The whole situation is horrible. Nothing good about it. -

Yeah, it’s a family from Pinetop. They are hunters and construction families. I expect that several here know them. The Mom went to Blue Ridge with my wife. Before people start jumping to conclusions they should get facts. These were experienced outdoor people who live in the mountains, not some California import living in Scottsdale. Right now it isn’t clear if there were barricades up or not, and the family was probably coming out from Tonto Basin not headed toward the lake. So no one knows what kind of road markings there were coming from their direction. The children were a combination from two different families, their moms are sisters I believe. Everyone who knows them is devastated. So yeah please.. keep your unfounded judgements to yourself. -
Keep it up. You’ll get your chance.

I am surprised by all the guys upset about snow. In ID we almost didn’t see any point in going out if there wasn’t a foot of snow. A couple years we got a big dump the week of thanksgiving and it turned into an old fashioned buffalo shoot. Dead elk everywhere.
-
If it’s dumping up high, go lower. If you can find a bull track in the burnt timber follow it till you get a shot. Elk are very trackable in deep new snow.
-
Wow. Amazing buck, congrats!

Keep hiking and glassing. I think there is a good chance bulls will be up all day if the wind isn’t blowing a hundred mph. With the snow and wind be careful. A few years ago a late bull hunter was killed when a tree fell on his tent during a big storm.

Good luck. Hope you brought your long john’s!!!
