Anyone know the family washed away in Tonto Basin?
Flatlander replied to PRDATR's topic in The Campfire
Just got back from searching. Tonto Creek is running about at the level that the Salt River does in the summer mostly shallow but some portions are over 6’ deep. The current is strong. They found some clothing near the crossing where they got stuck, but no other sign of the girl. I am sure she is still submerged in a snag somewhere. I spent almost all my time wading the river checking snags. It’s a sickening feeling every time you reach under water to feel around... hoping you don’t find what you are looking for. The whole situation is horrible. Nothing good about it. -

Go away Lance. Seriously just go ahead and disappear. This crap isn’t needed right now. -

Yeah, it’s a family from Pinetop. They are hunters and construction families. I expect that several here know them. The Mom went to Blue Ridge with my wife. Before people start jumping to conclusions they should get facts. These were experienced outdoor people who live in the mountains, not some California import living in Scottsdale. Right now it isn’t clear if there were barricades up or not, and the family was probably coming out from Tonto Basin not headed toward the lake. So no one knows what kind of road markings there were coming from their direction. The children were a combination from two different families, their moms are sisters I believe. Everyone who knows them is devastated. So yeah please.. keep your unfounded judgements to yourself. -
Keep it up. You’ll get your chance.

I am surprised by all the guys upset about snow. In ID we almost didn’t see any point in going out if there wasn’t a foot of snow. A couple years we got a big dump the week of thanksgiving and it turned into an old fashioned buffalo shoot. Dead elk everywhere.
-
If it’s dumping up high, go lower. If you can find a bull track in the burnt timber follow it till you get a shot. Elk are very trackable in deep new snow.

Wow. Amazing buck, congrats!

Keep hiking and glassing. I think there is a good chance bulls will be up all day if the wind isn’t blowing a hundred mph. With the snow and wind be careful. A few years ago a late bull hunter was killed when a tree fell on his tent during a big storm.

Good luck. Hope you brought your long john’s!!!

Ever come east?

Man, took some balls to post this here and own up to your mistake. I have been in similar situations and that is a really bad feeling. I’ve self reported a couple things and they weren’t as easy on me, and I don’t blame them but also don’t know what going to court and paying minimal fines really accomplished. I am glad to hear some WM’s have common sense.

Good kid right there... hopefully someone can help prevent him from becoming a wildcat. 😬

Good luck Fred! Can’t wait to see the pics!

I’m confused, did you leave snowflake?

It will be interesting to see what happens here in AZ over the next 60 days. With banner moisture and elk that look like they have been eating out of Barry Bonds medicine cabinet the holders of the current and upcoming auction and rifle tags are all likely to be looking to punch out. So far I believe 2 of the 3 current year tag holders are punched out. Can AZ produce 4 more 400” bulls? I have heard it said many many times that in AZ any elk unit can produce a 400” bull, if that is true this year would prove it with the potential of giant velvet bulls hitting the dirt all over the state. It will definitely be an interesting case study.

Hopefully you are right in the middle of them right now!

And I am stuck working in the yard. Keep us updated Fred!

In your original post you said you weren’t able to find any elk on your scouting trip but Kenny is pointing out that you did find one.
-
Thanks for posting the pic Tony. A google search didn’t yield me any results.

You guys that have shoulder mounts in the garage... how do the hides hold up?

Sweet Adam! Congratulations on a very “average” deer.
