    Late archery success

Way to make the most of it!

    Thanks!

Today I wanted to take a moment and be grateful for the CWT community. It seems weird to say something like that about a hunting forum, but it has become something much bigger than that. This year has brought a ton of new experiences for my family. Luckily the CWT family has been there for us all along the way. In January I was pig hunting when I got a picture message from my wife of my son’s gashed and bloody lip from a bike wreck. That started a series of events that lead to him being diagnosed with a condition called CMT 1A and resultant hip dysplasia. Since that time he has had one reconstructive surgery with another to take place in 10 days. I have shared parts of this on CWT and since I first brought it up tons of people have offered help and support. Just last night Adam leant is his crossbow so Hunter could squeeze in one more day of hunting on a donated late archery bull tag. We headed straight from his house to Sean’s and picked up his doe skull which Draysen cleaned for Hunter free of charge (btw he does awesome work, highly recommend him). Earlier this month Hunter has a donated cow tag and Houston spent morning and night for weeks before patterning elk for him and then spent the entire opening day out with us. Eddie Corona from OE4A provided not one but two elk tags and took time out of his very busy schedule to get the paperwork done for those and get them to us on short notice. Stanley and others provided tips and suggestions for Hunters first deer hunt on the Kaibab this year. There are so many people who have offered support, encouragement, prayers and anything else we could need. I even think AZKiller has offered some encouragement. I know it sounds cliche but it’s true that folks around here have become like family. During a year that could have been pretty challenging, it’s been the opposite, surgery has been a footnote to all of the great things that have happened! So thank you. It’s made all the difference. God bless all of you!

    How is YOUR coldbore?

To answer the OP’s question at my age the bore is always cold and I can’t afford any warm up shots. More than once this has lead to fouling. I used to get upset but now I am just grateful to get to sleep earlier.

    Job Search For a Friend

All the ready mix concrete outfits are dying for drivers. Calportland in particular has a robust training program. Their good drivers who work max hours pull 6 figures, but they earn it.

    Sheep Relocation

Picacho Peak and Leonard Canyon. Totally awesome to think about seeing Rocky’s in Clear Creek. That’s going to be another hunt like Cataract Canyon. Thanks to all involved.
  9. Nice story, thanks for sharing. And agree on pics, show us your trophy! Now that it’s home just snap a pic of the skull or cap or whatever you did. Ortherwise you might get a reputation.

    Canyons or flats?

Desert muleys are where you find them. Patterning them is like trying to pattern a cloud. They seem to like creosote flats. They eat Cholla. Sometimes they bed at the base of little nobs or hills. Sometimes they bed in washes. Sometimes they are on hills or saddles. One thing that is for certain... watch out for snakes.

    Super Bonus Point

Would be great to do it without creating a disadvantage for people who have been using the system for a long time.

    Super Bonus Point

Montana squares points. The result is that there are so many random numbers it very much dilutes the advantages. A case study on AZ’s most popular units would be interesting.

    Super Bonus Point

I think that most of Umpqua’s concerns would be resolved if they simply made the super point only valid for one year. I still vote for a raffle. Similar to the Big Game Super Raffle, for each species they raffle off 10 additional bonus points to be used in the next draw cycle.

Typical Day for Late Season Bull

My typical day on a late bull hunt starts with glassing feeding areas and travel corridors in the AM, usually from distance. I am not necessarily in position to take a shot but more aligning myself for a mid morning pursuit of bedded elk. After opening day I expect elk to be out of the open areas and headed to bed by sun up. If I locate bulls I watch them until they bed and plan a pursuit. Either attempting to shoot them in their beds or ambush them at last light when they begin to move back towards feeding areas. If I am ambushing I set up on the same travel corridors I saw the museum the AM. If I haven’t located anything then once the sun is up I switch to glassing bedding areas and thick cover. Elk will move around some, and they’re big so they can be located at any time of the day. Sometimes they even water midday. In the evening I am setting up on areas where I expect to see elk emerge from their beds. Evening time is a challenging time to kill a bull, because recovery is a problem. Even in November leaving a bull overnight can lead to spoilage. So be aware of what you are signing up to when you pull that trigger. Good luck amigo! Be sure to report back and take lots of pics.

    How is YOUR coldbore?

Sorry Shooter you obviously haven’t met the flat-brim-6.5-or-die-I-don’t-smile-for-pics-#longrangeshooting crowd that frequents these places. They can’t be questioned. As for my first hand experience, the two people I have seen take 600+ yd shots on animals required more than one shot to seal the deal. In fact both were more than 5 shots. Maybe Lance will jump in here. I think he took his bull last year at 700+ and I don’t think he heated up the barrel doing it.

    How is YOUR coldbore?

Looks to me like he asked for first hand info about people’s experiences. Not sure why you took it where you did.
