True, and I agree but there are those mornings that are cold enough to have you shivering uncontrollably if not prepared. Try and get a shot off as light gets good enough when you can't control your shaking. Been that cold several early AM's during early NOV hunts, luckily never cost me a shot but sure made an impression. Definitely all true.

In early December you are much more likely to sweat your buns off than freeze. And even if its cold in the AM, it will almost certainly warm up really fast. Be careful with base layers.

The 2018 leftover list is now up on G&F website.

Its happened before. But take it as an indication of the hunt. That unit has been used and abused. Had that hint last year, it sucked.

  13. I only know 24b. Its a rugged unit. The north side definitely gets less traffic than the south. There are coues everywhere top to bottom. Some of the access points into the wilderness from the North can get a little crowded. Like most coues units in this state, there are WAY too many early season tags and no matter where you go it can get a little crowded. But it sounds like you are willing to do some work to get away from the crowds and in that case you should be more or less fine. Good luck. And if you havent put in yet you are at least 18 months from hunting either of those units wits a rifle. So lots of time to do research. If you are interested in hunting this year grab your bow or pick up a leftover coues tag for a southern unit during the leftover over draw this month.
  14. If I had this tag, a perfect hunt would be the hunt 2 weeks during the archery/rifle have a lot of close encounters but never pull the trigger. Then go back for the late rifle hunt bundle up and shoot a nice bull in a foot of snow the way that 75% of rifle elk hunters tag out every year. I reallly hope you post a few stories on this. Definitely looking forward to your adventures.

I have not hunted it for years but this much shouldnt have changed, during the archery hunt look up in the pines. Get a turkey tag so that when you get frustrated you can blast one of those instead of shooting a forky out of frustration. There are lots of nice camping areas. Its beautiful there that time of year. If you get lucky you may even bump into a herd of elk. Enjoy, thats a hunt I have always wanted to go back and do again.
  16. For weather, the early seasons will be just a bit cooler than our mountain temps. Plan on at least one snowstorm around the first of October. It probably wont stick around long but usually around that time of year it would drop 3-4 and then melt off over a few days. Late season can be 50s and clear blue or feet of snow.
  17. Wow, great tag. I dont know a lot but spent some time living in the SLC area. I think I saw you post this on another forum, M.M. maybe. There is some great advice there. Hobble creek gets lots of bulls during in the rut. There are elk all over that unit, and its huge. Its divided East / West by the Wasatch mountains and driving from one side to the other for the most part requires going down and around to one of the canyons through the mountains. Some one may have already mentioned it, but the late season might be the best chance at a big bull. Good luck and post up some pics and stories of your adventure!

2018: What’s ur bull goal this year?

Well you know, I am a meat hunter. Hopefully nothing dinkier than what I killed last year.
  19. Which hunt? Hobble creek is good early. Lots of guys hunt around Strawberry Reservoir. Time of year will have a lot to do with temps.
  20. In October I pack sunscreen. In December I pack a coat and gloves. Thats about it, especially early Dec vs October.

I still remember the first time I took an animal without my Dad. And unfortunately there hasnt been one with him since. Its weird how it sneaks up on you, one day you just realize its been years since you shook bloody hands over a successful outing. We do t hunt together much at all anymore. Maybe this year we will turn that around since we both have the same desert tag. On the other end of things this year I took my first animal with my sons with me. What a great day that was. It was an archery pig and they were right behind me and got to see it all happen. Hopefully the first of many more. No, you arent a weakling, you are just like the rest of us!

I have been listening to this the past several days. Very good info. Interesting that when I asked CAPAZ about this type of organization they said no one from the National orgs cared about our ballot initiative. It will be interesting to talk more with these guys.
