Picked up my Dad and left town around 10:00 Thursday. My Brother was stuck in meetings and met us at camp (he always does this to get out of setting up camp). Weather was perfect and we actually got to the spot we used to camp at 35 years ago. My 88 year old Dad decided to split the cedar stump we found along the way. My brother arrived and we did a little scouting. Then it was time for dinner. Dutch oven shepherds pie and sitting around a nice fire Couldn't sleep that night. Even at my old age I still get too excited to sleep the night before the hunt. Got up at O dark thirty and headed out to our glassing spot after coffee. No deer spotted but several Grey Fox and a lot of quail. Spooked a couple of doe on the way back to camp. My Dad was looking a little tired. I had forgotten how darn rough that country was. We ate breakfast and made another loop trying to see something. The only thing I got was a sunburn. Time for lunch. Drove further up the road to hunt for the evening. More quail and a lot of sign. The Manzanita was so thick in there. Even if you saw one you wouldn't have time to get a shot. Found this track. Not sure what made it. Dad was really tired that night. So was I! Dinner, campfire and cocktails then bed. The stars were spectacular both nights. Woke up to a fingernail moon over the peak. Dad didn't feel like going out for the morning hunt. He said there wasn't any game (his way of saying I'm tired). After the morning hunt we packed up and came home. We didn't get to hunt that much and didn't bring back any meat but spending the time with my Dad and Brother was successful in my book. I never know if this will be the last time I get to hunt with my Dad and I will take tag soup and spending time with him over any trophy buck. Sorry it was a long read.

I was hoping you might stop by. We were just past Griffin ranch. Close to 7 mile wash and Yankee Joe wash. How was your hunt? I hope you had a great time as well.

Congrats on a GREAT buck! Glad you got to be with your Dad when he got it.

That is an awesome trophy. $1000 is pretty steep but most of us have seen one in the wild. I'd sure try to find a way to have him mounted. Congrats!

Congrats Ernesto and Ana! It's fun to hear a proud father talk about their kids. You are a good father to get her to that buck! What a great double team!

Why don't you visit them on their hunt banging pots and pans all the way in I'd release a garbage bag full of scorpions in their blind!

Call it in. This kind of Crap has to stop. Sorry your hunt was ruined but very glad no harm came to you. What a sad situation. -

Thanks all for the kind words. I thank Gad that I can still do this with my Dad. 2 things I forgot in the post My Dad has carpal Tunnel (sp) in both wrists and has very little feeling in his fingers. It is very hard for him to grip shoelaces, zippers and all the little things we take for granted. I think that was the main reason for him wanting to come home. He has surgery scheduled for both later this month. He should be ready for elk and deer next year! I Hope!!!! My brother stayed out extra late the last morning so that I could tear down camp as well!

Congrats. Sounds like a Great time with family. Way to fill up the freezers! -
It's finally here. Heading out tomorrow with my Dad and hopefully my brother. Between work and personal commitments I haven't had time to scout and neither has my brother. We are going to the place where my brother got his first deer and so many other great memories. It's been over 35 years since we hunted it. Fortunately it is not covered in houses (thank God for Google Earth). My Dad is 88 years old and this may be the last time we can get out. I cannot wait to spend the time with him and my brother. It doesn't matter if we kill anything. I just look forward to creating more memories. I will write up our story and add pictures whether or not we get one when we get back. Thanks everyone for the great stories and pictures to get my blood pumping for my hunt! Keep em coming!

Great story! What a great Dad giving his tag to his son. I loved the prayer part as well. The look on his face says everything. Congrats to the both of you!

At my old age I would rather sleep on the mountain than go 2.7 miles in the dark. I don't see or heal as well as I used to. Although a real good bed and some good vittles make it more appealing to make the hike.

Thanks Jim. It will be a fun trip and we'll sure give it our best shot. The freezer has been empty for far too long. My brother is really good at seeing only one deer a trip but the darn thing has horns. I alwys get to spend my opening morning helping him drag out a deer. We will eat good and have a Great time no matter what. Dutch oven packed and ready. Shepherds pie and cobbler. Yum yum. My brother may not make it up there until opening morning. We'll see how it plays out.
