6.5x284 mule deer/coues gun
rcdinaz replied to trophymaster's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Good choice! I have 2 6.5x284's, the only issue is it requires a long action. If I did another 6.5 it would probably be 6.5 SAUM or 6.5-06. Would save a little $ on brass and get a little more speed in a SA. -
Seems to have been discontinued

If and when do you lower your standards?
rcdinaz replied to no worries's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
let them choose unless you know you are going to be really pressed for time. I have one daughter that just wants to hunt and shoot and one that is patient unless we convince her otherwise. If we find a good one in the area before opening day we will wait longer but usually after day one it is pretty much game on for forks or better. It is nice that they have already shot good deer so they don't really ask about spikes. I think they have higher standards than me because they were blessed early with a couple of great hunts. -
I want on the list also!

When I researched them I ended up choosing the Delorme unit. I believe Amanda uses the same one. You can send texts and also let others track where you are and battery life is good. Service depends entirely on what plan you pick but expect $20-$30 a month and all of them still have the quirky plans where you have to turn them off or you get billed. Good luck on the hunt!

Great thread idea. Sorry for the long list, I spend way too much time thinking about this stuff so the list keeps growing. Nothing is a necessity but I high five myself every time I use these. Soto Pocket Torch: $20 buys you magic , seriously turns any Bic into a serious torch. Yes, you are all welcome this thing is awesome! Walkstool: Do your @ss and back a favor and then fold it down small enough to fit in your backpack. There is a recent thread on this, just buy one! Shooter app: Changed my shooting game and ability to quickly set up others in my party. Kestrel: You need an anemometer anyway so buy a good one and step up and get the baro, temp, humidity so you can use it with Shooter Garmin GLO: paired with Motion GPX or Trimble Hunt & Fish app. GPS on your phone screen is a game changer especially with hunt units, boundaries, wireless uploads, etc. Triclawps: Mostly because it has worked amazingly well for my kids and father in situations where they could not have made a shot otherwise. DeLorme INReach: again not so much for me, more for my wife who is a worry wart made the Mexico trips doable Pit Jugs: Red Walmart gas jugs suck! slow and messy. Good fuel jugs for $25 are worth every penny and you can even pretend your racing and make car noises if you want. Jet Boil: cooks and boils water in minutes! Also had a cheap coffee press attachment, mmmm! fresh (good) coffee! Powertank: If you have the funds buy a Co2 tank fills tires in seconds (not minutes). I just recently made this investment, expensive but wow is it convenient BOLT Locks: Also a new one for me. Hitch lock, padlock that keys to your truck key auto-magically so you don't ever lose it. -
Blue grouse hunting in AZ
rcdinaz replied to nw07heavy's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
We always see them on the roads and hills near the Black River but I have never checked to see if the reservation allows them to be hunted. -
I think these guys know what they are doing based on the reading I have done. They came out of Brunton and started their own company so they could offer customizing. My guess would be the glass would be spec'd close similar to Brunton. They look fantastic!

From my reading the Gap and SAUM are basically the same. But you can get GAP stamped brass and cannot get 6.5 SAUM brass? I thought Hornady was supposed to start making it but can't find it in stock anywhere so maybe there was an issue or maybe it is crazy popular.

The walk stool no contest and I have tried everything I could get my hands on. You will think it is a rip off until you use it and wonder why you didn't buy one long ago. I also carry an outdoorsmans pad. Sitting on the ground or kneeling if you have to make a shot it is well made.

Anyone check these out or have any feedback on Fierce Rifles? I guess Sportsman's has the from time to time now. Trying to decide if it is just a Sendero in a pretty package or something more.

Intersting... That is all I shoot in the 7mm anymore and I have had great success. Last critter was an Audad and a hair over 560yds and he was a one and done. I want to try the ELDX but after the move I don't even have my loading gear set up.

December tag would be nice! I am hoping each daughter got a tag. The younger one has had a tag every year, too bad she can't buy lottery tickets. She already has the jr Elk tag so I am hoping her sister has the jr deer tag. I have to retrain my brain I am so used to finding deer for them and helping them get set up I have to remember how to shoot one on my own. At least the muley's are a lot bigger than the coues. I never have shot a mule deer buck.

Best Rifle Scope with custom turret option
rcdinaz replied to joeinaz's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
You are correct in most cases out to 500 yds does not change much on zero other than windage. Go for it $100 for a turret on a gun you will never change loads on is not bad. If you are unsure of the exact parameters you could even order a custom label for your turret. Custom Turret Systems does them for $25. I don't mind dialing but was considering this option for my daughters rifles so they could set drop while I check wind conditions and save a little time. -
I need a pair of bino's for the truck and I ain't putting any of the swaros in there to get stolen. Anyone have a favorite 10x42 or 8x42 that are $400 or less? The Monarch's seem to be a go to for a lot of people but I was also curios if anyone uses some of the less known brands zen-ray, Hawke, etc.

23jr tag and a 3a/c mulie for me. I haven't had a tag in 6 years so it is about time!

I am going to go take a look at the Monarchs still seems like there are a lot of them out there and everyone is pretty happy with them. If the Zen Ray go on sale I may grab a pair. I could not find enough real feedback on the Sig Zulu's. The Kryptek pattern Leupold BX-3's look very cool but the cheapest I found were still about $500 -

Sig as one of the lines I was curious about as well. The magazine reviews have been good. -
Nice rig. This one is killing me! I have a daughter who needs a rifle but I just bought a truck.

That is list is depressing. I have no intention of listening to people that play make believe for a living on any issue.
