To flute or not to flute

You can but them already fluted from Brux and Hart and many others. You already figured it out though, don't bother... If the barrel shoots good there is not point. I will be trying Phx Customs for my next build as was suggested. They helped me out on a rebarrel, good guys!

    Steel gongs

I have some made of aluminum tube I bought, let me know if you want me to dig them up and post a pic. I think conduit with 2 pcs ~ 100 deg off a center point is the measurement, those two pcs are at ~90 from each other. You want the legs to lean away from the target so they are as far out of range as possible but still hold the weight. We shot one leg off one weekend, bullets go through rebar like butter. I made some out of aluminum tube which was awesome to carry but got expensive on misses!

This is the pricing from the site but they have some stuff there like the big pig target that are not on the site. They also had squares instead of round. Buy some of these which are really slick as well: http://www.amazon.com/The-Last-Stand-Target/dp/B00JVX4JB8 If you have someone who can weld you can make some out of round tube for cheap as well. Gong Style Targets: 4” Round x 3/8”Thick $10.99 6” Round x 3/8” Thick $15.99 6” Round x 1/2” Thick $23.99 8” Round x 3/8” Thick $21.99 10” Round x 3/8” Thick $35.99 10” Round x 1/2” Thick $46.99 IPSC Style Targets: 18” W x 26” H x 1/2” Thick $111.99
  6. Awesome! That is what it is all about!
  7. My rambling thoughts: I have two girls that are teenagers and they love shooting and hunting. I took them fishing and shooting when they were young and so did grandpa. My oldest goes fishing in the lakes around Chandler on her own or with friends as well as to the archery range. I don't think we did anything special other than make them a part of it by including them. Make them a part of what you do by telling stories, showing them fish or game you have taken and sharing your excitement every chance you get. One of my girls spent a good 20 minutes examining my sheep when I got it home and she was only about 6 years old. She looked in its mouth, and touched almost everything from the ribs to the eyes. My wife started to say oh gross and I stopped her and that kid is afraid of nothing (yes I washed her hands). She catches bugs, lizards, and anything else just like a "boy" and could care less about cleaning fish or anything else for that matter. Both girls will be different and with twins that may be tough since there will be times when you will need to take only one of them, one won't want to go, discipline, other activities and so on but it is okay and sometimes better for one of them to get undivided attention. Besides life ain't fair anyway. Some ideas: - Mine helped clean guns from a very young age, make a big deal out of it let them hold the tools or oil the bolt. Again you can always redo it but mine would get very excited about helping out and they learned a lot. - Take them trout fishing; you usually catch fish and the weather is nice. Let them catch crawdads, throw rocks, and chase the squirrels if they decide it is more fun than fishing on that day. - Exploring, just get them out and make it fun, geocaching, flower picking, picture taking, anything they come up with. - We did a project gun when my oldest was 10. We painted it purple, grey, and black in snake skin pattern. Let them do a little painting, who cares what it looks like, ours turned out well though - If they want to go home YOU have to suck it up and call it a day. I hate this but you can't turn fishing and hunting into torture. - Practice any opportunity you have to; fishing in the pool, casting contests, explain what kind of ducks they are looking at, show them lots of pictures and where each animal should be shot, answer any and all questions you get. - Do a research project with them. Ours was javelina and was actually my daughters idea because of a kids book she had. One word of caution: the teacher gets a little annoyed when your 6 year old starts teaching the class if the subject comes up. It is also frowned upon if she yells "I know about them already, my dad shoots those" I thought it was awesome but my wife told me it was not. - Go to the zoo, mine know I like the desert section better than the other animals and we study the critters and talk about them. Botanical garden is good also. - Bowfishing may be the best kid magnate ever created. It is hunting and fishing, you are constantly moving and you see fish and get to shoot. Every kid I have taken including mine can't wait to go again even if they spend all night missing. When they are old enough to shoot a bow try and get them out if you can. - When you are ready to go hunting practice a lot, dry fire practice may work even better than throwing lead. (of course you need to be extremely careful and establish rules) I have had a few guides tell me they have grown men as clients that can't find the target through the scope. My girls don't even think about it and they have good trigger control and posture. You also can see any potential problems before you hunt. We know which rest works best, which position, which stool if they can't be prone and have time to sit while shooting, and how to shoot off a tripod. I could help them more during at home practice than at the range worrying about all the other distractions. Both girls expect to put the bullet where it belongs and confidence breeds success as you already know. Hunting and fishing is one of those rare activities that we all usually talk to each other as equals while doing even when we are teaching which is why I think kids kind of automatically love being a part of it. Since you already care enough to give it some thought and ask for advice I am sure you will be a successful teacher.

    Reloading guys.

Both Redding press and hand primer
  9. I built a 6.5x284 on a Rem SA, thought I would be okay with using it as a single shot on the 140g VLD's but I am tired of doing so just on the first load development. So for the 284 I will most likely swap out the SA for a LA. For the short action give me some opinions on which cartridge? I will probably have to drop down to the 120ish grain bullets but could put together a pretty slick mountain rifle. 260Rem, 6.5x47, or Creedmoor seem like they would work, no changes to the bolt face. At first glance I was leaning towards the Creedmoor but want some feedback. It looks like I could still actually load the 140's but probably won't need to for a hiking and packing rifle.
  10. What barrel contour do you guys prefer? Are most of you using something along the lines of a Sendero taper or similar? Anyone using a lighter taper and having good results? I was looking at Hart & Brux around a #3 which is something along the lines of a medium heavy barrel. 3# on the Brux chart. The advantage of the Hart barrels would be cost and more fluting options if I go fluted.

    Which one?

Tough to tell but my vote was the 2nd as well.
  12. goatsie good timing I saw this one pop up while doing some reading today. I couldn't find what the COAL would be if I were using the 140's? would this or the WSM cycle in a 700 SA?

    Lookin for reloading stuff

Look for Nosler brass even if you have to order it. It comes fully prepped and will save you a lot of time! http://www.brunoshooters.com/product/12535.html Bruno's in Phx had it in stock and would only be 1-2 days to ship in state. Stainless media can be bought off of Amazon and delivered 1-2 days as well. Free shipping with Prime and it is a one day turn around. http://www.amazon.com/STM-Stainless-Tumbling-Media-Reloading/dp/B00KO9DF9K/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1440043281&sr=8-1&keywords=stainless+media

Staying cool in a hot blind

I heard you are supposed to pee on your leg... oh wait I think that is for jellyfish, never mind! You are pretty much stuck other than a water bottle to mist yourself and one of those cooling towels. I know some guys sit in shorts as well. You could bring a little battery operated fan, I have thought of it but was not sure if they make too much noise or noise critters can hear that we can't.
  15. Thanks for all of the feedback! I was under the impression the 260 and was still a bit on the long side for cycling the 140's smoothly? Really that was the main reason for considering the other two. Although I have read of quite a few getting pretty close with their Creedmoor MV's to the 260 numbers. Of course I am sure that is pushing it on the pressure side. If the 260 will cycle rounds as a hunting rifle that sounds like the answer followed by the Creedmoor. My new opinion on brass is the Nosler stuff is the best thing going. I have always preached Lapua but after loading 2 rifles with the Nosler that stuff is fantastic. It comes completely finished, flash hole, case mouth, primer pockets etc. A box full of cases that come ready to load and are almost perfectly matched is worth some extra $ in my opinion.

    Gun mistakes

NEF Single shot .20 gauge! My dad bought me one to go dove hunting when I was around 10. I couldn't hit notin'! He said "let me shoot it" and realized those little guns kick like a mule and told me to put it in the truck we would share a gun. No one has ever shot it since. I have been really luck so far with what I have purchased.

    Riflescope Mounting

You could always go with Burris Signature rings which are self centering (with in reason). The bases are cheap two but after spending a good chunk on your scope I would get a 1pc base. You have a scope with a 1" tube so that part is easy enough. You can actually get a dowel (Ace, Home Depot) or pc of bar stock from the scrap bin at a metal supplier and line the rings up on your own. They make a tool for this and it is really nice to have but not necessary if this is a one time thing for you. You were already on Midway so this would make it easy: EGW Base: http://www.midwayusa.com/product/434640/egw-1-piece-picatinny-style-base-remington-700-matte?cm_vc=ProductFinding Make sure you by the base for your action long or short, otherwise you will spend 30 minutes or more trying to figure out why the @$#! holes don't line up. Rings: http://www.midwayusa.com/product/1548661544/burris-1-signature-zee-weaver-style-rings?cm_vc=ProductFinding Now level the scope, all you need is a small level to set on the top scope cap. FYI... your iPhone or Android have a very good level in them and the cases are machined and square, the apps are free. So no excuse, but investing in a level is a good idea anyway. A Wheeler kit costs $15 on Amazon, you need it anyway if you ever have to re-zero, buy a new scope, etc so don't be cheap with your $900 scope. Directions on leveling: http://www.shootingillustrated.com/articles/2013/7/19/leveling-riflescopes/ Check your level with your eye using a plumb bob, make sure it has not moved when you tighten everything down. DO NOT crank it like the Hulk or you may bend, dent, your new scope. There are torque specs look them up not a good idea to take someones advice on torque, if you don't have a torque wrench then buy one or borrow one. You should be using one on the bases as well. You can literally do this in 15-20 minutes and you will forever know how it is done and have the ability to make a change in the field or help out a buddy. For $100 you can buy everything you need base, rings, wrench, level (well the wrench may put you over a little). Good luck! Gitter' Done!

    G7 Rangefinder is AWESOME!!!!

The last one I did for a 7 Rem Mag I had to bump the Velocity up 70 FPS. from the chronograph readings. I can't recall exactly now but I think mine was 40fps which put it back on course for 500 yds & 700 yds. I have never touched it since the day I made those changes and it has hit its target ever since.

Need help picking a new stock

I have an Mc on my custom 7mm, and a couple of HS Precisions. I would like a Manners or a Mc in the carbon fiber ultralight. I have a laminated Boyd's on the 7mm Dakota but it sure is heavy. I have had too many things to spend money on the last few years but I need to get a couple of half finished gun projects done in the next year. Then I am going to finally do a 338 and stop talking about it.
