Called another bear in Close 7 yards.
rcdinaz replied to Buckhunter's topic in Black Bear or Grizzly Bear hunts
Ditto for 23S! I didn't hear or see anything the last two days. Did see a to of deer so I know the optics were working. One of the ranchers said they weren't in the pears this year, at least not in that area. The heat in the late afternoon is unbearable! -
Good point! Mine is good at 100 but much better at 2& 300...

Ya that ought to make a big hole and let the air out real quick! Nice rig!

Florida Bus Beating
rcdinaz replied to Non-Typical Solutions's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
I agree that entire episode is ridiculous. Already heard some of the media defending this, you know it is the bus drivers and schools fault. All of those kids should do jail time. -

Shhh dont tell anyone! Before you know it everyone will be doubling down on their immoral hunting activities. -
Most sample size statistics throw out the low and the high which means your ES is pretty good. I usually try and get out at least tow different times to get an idea. The second time I might take a stab at another powder. I really like H4831, especially the SC, but for a magnum my go to for awhile has been H1000. For our temperature variability it has shown for me to be the most consistent for the magnum rounds. When you calculated your expected numbers for the load did you get what you wanted/expected? 40 fps probably doesnt matter out to 500 yards maybe a little further. It seems that most rounds really start to change POI around 700 yards, or atleast the ones I shoot .243 to .308. I am pretty much basing this on the velocity differences I see going from the Valley to the Rim. If you are going past 500 you may want to tinker a bit more. If you are pressed for time and really want the turret go for it, you can always switch back to the std one. I personally would just go with the tables and a phone app ( I use shooter). I use my phone but print a backup as well. Good luck!

Wow this was entertaining! Still not quite to the level of arguments that were had over long range hunting but it has potential... -
Well I agree but atleast you come home with more than the standard dehydration and a sunburn! I will be in 23, big grey Avalanche, lots of AZ pinstripe, a rack and 35" tire on top. Pretty hard to miss. Good luck to everyone!

I am, and yes it is going to be hot! miserable hunt unless you actually find a bear!

Regardless of brand the outpout depends on the LED they are using. Almost every manufacturer uses either Cree or LumiLED's, most are Cree. The mfg can have different designs on how light is thrown or focused and some have much better battery mgmt. I like most of the ones mentioned and have a few but I tend to use my Fuel headlight or the cheap energizer ones that come in bright colors which keep me from losing the thing.

Primers are they the same from brand to brand
rcdinaz replied to SO I HUNT's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Yes! Some burn hotter, quicker, and they can be harder metal from one brand to the other. All that being said for some loads it seems to change nothing. I have had some loads cut ES in half from teens to highe single digits, not for many loads but a few. -
The area can be really differnt depending on where you hunt. East off Klondyke Rd, West side, North end, or South past Tuscon going east. It may help if you narrow down where you plan on starting. Off of Klondyke you can find deer from the bottom up to the top. I have seen mulies at all altitudes as well. Jump onto Google Earth and start finding water sources to help plan your hunt as well. I have not found a water hole in the area that did not have deer moving around.

I think it is probably one of the issues already mentioned. I have done most of those myself. - Shell holder has something in it - Seating stem is not clean - Primer not fully seated - Trying VLD bullets with a std stem, the bullet can bottom before the ogive touches out and then rock causing inconsistency - Measuring bullet to the tip instead of with a gauge at the ogive - Arm on the press not clearing or being run all the way through the cycle each and every time Desert Bull described what I do as well which a lot of people say is a waste of time. - Make a reference round - Measure with a gauge and Micrometer at the and then set calipers to "0" on the reference round - Seat all other bullets over length by backing of seating die ~1/8 of a turn, usually less with micrometer die. - Finalize seating so that each round is exactly "0" on the gauge You could do this with a standard die if you made some pretty precise reference marks for the over length rounds but it would be a much slower process as a very small turn is going to move the seating depth a lot. I have found that with the Berger HVLD's the last time all my measuring was almost for nothing as the bullets were almost exactly the same in weight and length at the ogive. But I have had a box in the past and some form other makers that were off. Buy the Defensive Edge DVD on reloading for long range and watch it 3-4 times adding to your notes what you missed the previous time. The DVD is worth every penny! I have a few others by Carlock does a really good job showing each and every step and then shows them taking game out to 1,500 yards with one shot. Not something I would try but this is what these guys do for a living.

I paid $600 to a friend of a friend and tipped him which was about 10 years ago. He was a newbie as a licensed guide for that guide service but had been assisting pretty much his whole life. I learned more in one hunt than I probably would have figured out in five on my own. Still a memorable hunt and I didnt even tag out. Good luck if you are taggin a buck this year you will forget the money in a hurry anyway. Oh and you will probbaly think he is a REALLY good freind after that,

I have bought a lot of ultralight and expensive gear and it is still tough to shave a bunch of weight. You just can't leave water out and it is not light, neither is a gun for that matter. It looks like you have done most of what you can that would save much weight. If you are carrying more than one knife ditch all but the one you feel you would need for sruvival. Add a havalon and 8-10 scalpel blades and it will weigh nothing and be more than enough to take care of an elk. If you can cache water or find a source where you can use a filter or purification tablets it is a huge plus, which was already mentioned. Food really isnt a big weight problem if you by the freeze dried stuff as mentioned. Change of underwear/sox is a must as a friend of mine learned the hard way (brutal). Clothes you cant minimze too much because getting wet or cold sucks and will make you miserable. Tent, stove, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, optics, phone, all end up being choices on what you feel you have to have as well as how much money you spend to some degree. Some people find ways to minimize any stakes or poles choosing to use trees, sticks, and rocks to set up their tent/bivy. I dont do this but have substitutted shooting sticks for an ultralight tent pole. I am just not willing to have my tent fall down when I need to be sleeping.

How many bucks in the picture?
rcdinaz replied to WHT_MTNMAN's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
Wow! No one is sneaking up on all those eyes, ears, and noses! I cant even recall a time I have seen more than 3 running together... -
Plenty of places to camp but also be aware there are antelope moving around all the water spots you mentioned as well. Camp at Scott's and then drive and hike the other areas so you don't acciepdently run them off in an are you could hunt.

I think evryone covered it my dad has been hunting that area for almost 30 years on and off and yes the roads suck with little maintenance over the past 10 years so the drive can be exciting. As was stated up on top is tough a the canyons gt deep so the better glassing and terrain will be half way in on the road although the views on top are pretty awesome.

I am looking for feedback on tree stands? My only experience is a couple of hunts in the mid west in permanent stands. I think I am leaning towards climbing sticks and a hang on and not a climber but prices are from one extreme to the other. I read a lot of feedback on Lone Wolf and a few others but they are really expensive. Should I go cheap or will I regret it? My plan is to have a ground blind and a tree stand for hunting in the forest. Thanks for any guidance!

The GPS signals are not part of the app and rely on either cellular triangulation or the GPS chip in your phone it will toggle automatically to what is available. I used mine with an XGPS receiver that links via Bluetooth to my phone and it is a better signal than my Garmin on my cached maps. Garmin has a new unit that does the same thing for ~$80 and is a newer chip with higher freq which I am thinking about getting as well. One for the rzr and one for the backpack. I pretty much go between motion X and Trimble as of this year. The real beauty of Trimble is the trip planning and ease of importing things like POI info from google earth.

Who has the thingy to attach your iphone to your scope?
rcdinaz replied to superdave's topic in The Campfire
Smart optix looks very good but it is a big piece of equipment to carry! I have seen a lot of DIY info on the web and until they bring the prices down on some of these I will probably go that route. Most of them are something along the lines of a 2" piece of PVC or end cap attached to a cheap phone case. I only have an issue with the cost of something like the Phone Skope since most of change phones every other year and the dimensions change leaving your adapter useless. -
You can see most of the consistent water sources on a good set of maps or google earth. It can be very rough and the deer seem to move into places that are near impossible to reach pretty quickly in the steep, cliff type areas. Nothing new for hunting coues but it seems like a pretty tough area for a bow hunt since some of the roads can really limit what you can get to even hiking. I guess you have to decide right off if you will stay low in the desert or move up high. The big frustration up on the tops is you may see deer in an area you just can't get to. Also, last year it was hot like never going to sleep in that weather kind of hot. Good luck hope you get on them right away!
