    95 or 105 vld's in .243

We have put the 95's through two guns but have not tried the 105's for the same reason you suggest. Even with the 95's my daugheters Tikka shoots them well and my buddies Marlin does not like them. We use the 4831SC for the .243's but to see if the bullet was even a candidate we started withe the HSM (hunting shack) loads we picked up at Sportsmans (claimed 3174fps), we then took that brass to start handloads with. Don't quote me on this because I don't have the load log in front of me but I beleive we stopped around 45gr, I have seen loads a bit higher on other forums, the Tikka is not a long barrel so the diminishing point of return was around the 45 mark. As always start low and see what it takes to get the MV you are after. I doubt the 105's will shoot well based on Berger recommending 1:8 twist I have read that even the 1:9 twist barrels some guys had still did not shoot well. Seems i keep going back to the Winchester CT 95gr bullet for the 6mm's. Read the Speer 100gr do well because they are not a super long VLD design so they will stabilize better so you cold look at those but I have not tried them. N160 seems to be a popular powder for the heavy VLD's with the long range & bench rest crowd also you may check that out.
  2. I have been using a 6x24 and 6x20 for awhile now. The only time I have had problems is having it turned up and not planning for a close shot. A couple months ago I shot a coyote and the other two with it high tailed it right at me. I shot over one of them 2 times shooting mostly at fur in the scope, at least I got the first one.
  3. I have a Kimber also, best looking handgun I have and it shoots better than I can. I should spend more time shooting it and would if it was a rifle. I am not a plastic pistol hater either have come very close a couple of times to buying and XD, just cant beat the style and feel of a 1911.
  4. You can get pretty much any cartridge to shoot a light for caliber bullet at crazy speeds but accuracy/stability usually suffers. I have shot light 6mm bullets through my 6/284 and 150gr bullets through the 300 RUM among other and they just don't shoot great. For one if you are hand loading you just can't usually get them within a mile of the lands in your rifle which in most rifles means round will be far from ideal for accuracy. Some guns don't care or may like the jump, none of mine seem to. Also, you have a 7mm take advantage of the great high BC bullets out there and the energy they product WAY out there.

    Anyone heard of Meopta?

They have been out a while, a friend bought a pair of the bino's about 3 years ago and he loves them. I think they are a bit on the heavy side but that being said they seem very durable and the glass is very good. I think they are a pretty good value but with Vortex and some of the new companies there is a lot of competition.

Arizona Bait Ban - AZGF wants "Bait" ban

Aren't we already more restricted than most states? I ask because I am not sure how the western states look but the rest of the country seems to be able to run wild with baiting, feeding, filming, etc.

    Ballistic Calculators?

Yes! It is probably closer to 1" but you should spend some time checking that down range if you can get out on a day with little to no wind. Smaller calibers tend to have higher twist rate barrels. For hunting this is probably a pretty good idea as it minimizes one more variable.

    iPad for checking trail cameras.

Ugg not as easy as you would hope! i just did 800 of them Select "Photos" tab, and tap the button next to Slideshow. You will see the Delete button is highlighted. Now the tricky part! Choose the first photo with 2 finger (touch the screen w 2 fingers) then drag both fingers across all the other pictures and it will select them to delete. It is a pain in the butt still since it does not scroll up very quickly. Good activity to pay a bored kid $5 to be your editor. All that being said it is much easier to hook it up to your PC/MAC download them all and choose to delete them all on your iPad then pick the ones you want after doing select on all your machine. If you find a better way PLEASE share!

    Ballistic Calculators?

One quick issue for those of you going out past ~500yds. You need to make sure you have adjustment/compensate for spin drift. The traditional SWAG at the affect on POI is ~1MOA or 1 IPHY or about 0.3 Mil take your pick. For my 7mm RM it ends up needing windage adjustment equal to ~ 9 inches at 1K yds as an example. Coriolis is not nearly as big of an issue but can also add ~1" - ~2" of additional drift at the 1K mark. Just something to consider when evaluating the various programs and their features if you plan on getting way out there to touch a few targets.

    Ballistic Calculators?

Exbal is one of the original standards but is expensive and requires a PDA, if you can swing it go for it. I have used Strelok and played with a few others iSnipe, FTE, bullet flight, but only use shooter now. Shooter is available on apple products and android so I have the same app on my iPad and Android phone. I have not found much lacking and it is pretty straight forward, also the author answers questions within 24 hours and is pretty helpful. One thing it makes pretty simple is adjusting the calculated output to match your real world conditions so you have an accurate ballistic table for your load in your rifle. It also utilizes the accelerometer so that you can get shot angle with your phone like having a portable ACI/ADI when you shoot.

    Optics

My opinion is that the scope you are looking at looks very good. FFP, mil reticle with 0.1 mil adjusments. At $1K I doubt there is much else that will have better glass unless you get used and jump up. I have an old 4200 Elite and eve nin the old scope the glass is pretty good and Bushnell seems to be working very hard on theie Elite Tactical products. I remeber their service was pretty good but it has been years since I had any of their tools. You could look at Vortex PST, Sightron SIII, and Zeiss which are right in the same price point with the features in the Bushnell. You have one thing I think important covered and that is matching turret and reticle measurements. Since you are paying for the carbon fiber barrel take a little time and check out the weight of the scopes you are considering as well. You save a #1-#1.5 on your barrel you may want to err on a ligher scope in keeping with the theme you built the gun in. I think you could save some money with a Nikon or other scopes but you won't have the features that make the Bushnell you are looking at a great scope and a super value. I was not aware of this new reticle FFP scope from Bushnell until you posted it looks pretty slick. my $0.02!

Good info thanks for the link.

    Attractant

I just went and read R12-4-303 and as it is written you can't use anything to attract bears. It looks like they were trying to ban minerals and salt licks as well even for deer at one point. So it looks like kidso is correct G&F could ticket you even for a lick. I have never hunted bear but it looks like a great experience.

    Hope they stick around!

I am not sure I could choose a sole purpose that first deer if he keeps on growing or that bear. Great spot!

    zeiss rapid z 1000

Luke is correct but the Rapid-Z 1K should be 500yds, should be pretty obvious because the numbers are there on the reticle. If you have an iPhone go load iStrelok it is free and the Zeiss reticles are all there. You just site it in as described and the program will give you the distances of each mark based on your load info. Good advice to go to the website and read the info straight from Zeiss. Good luck!

    7mm Rem mag reloads

Retumbo was my go to for a few years for the magnums but last summer I got some squirly results on really hot days. I was getting some big velocity changes in the same loads. I still think it is a great powder and my 300RUM seemed to love it but with the 7RM and 7 Dakots I was shooting the H1000 seemed to be a bit more reliable.
  18. You may be able to do a lot of work on powder selection for your reloading and get some velocity back, it won't be all of it. If you find a faster burning powder you might find a load that us still within 100-150 fps of the longer barrel. Reality is it shouldn't matter much if you are not planning on shooting longer distances, in the first 300 yds maybe 400 you will still have plenty of energy. Just pretend it is a 308 which I think have killed quite a few animals.

Anyone use a good gps smart phone app?

BackCountry is good and you can add BLM map layers for $7.99 it has most of the basic features you need. I used BackCountry last year and still use it but I a trying out Cabelas new app. Trimble maps are very good with a lot more map choices. Trimble is the company that is responsible for Cabela's Recon. I would use the Cabela's version if you think there is any chance you may sign up for Cabela's Recon Elite serivice. I it is a bit steep at $29.99 per year but it has some great features such as unit map and BLM outlines. The Cabela's product also allows you to set up trips on your computer via their site and then easily sync them on your phone. You also get ballistics info for factory loads, and geo-caching features. They seem to be actively developing other features based on user feedback which is good to see. If you are willing to bite the bullet the Cabela's app and services seem to be very good. I tried not to like the tool because the price is steep but it works and is very straightforward but Unit & BLM layers are great to have an setting everything up on your computer and then turning on your phone and pushing sync is the easiest way to build an accurate trip plan wit the right maps I have found. I hope to play with it a bit more and come back with an review of the app compared to a few others. Remember you need to cache the maps you want on your phone before you go into the field or the screen will be blank once you lose your cell signal.

    need info on leftover tags

I was looking at 35b but it is probably my second choice. I have not been down there in a while but always saw deer in the past. Last time I was there it was a really tough hunt, stayed in a hotel in Patagonia.

    Glassing for Coues

Go on a sheep hunt even if you just volunteer to be extra eyeballs! After that you will never be the same and you will learn what glassing till your eyes fall-out is all about. One thing I had not seen mentioned yet was to pick a place where you can cover as much ground as is possible so you can avoid moving around a lot. Pre-glassing from space... Google Earth & topo maps can be a huge help to find water holes, natural funnels in the landscape, roads, trails, etc. GPS will help you keep track of where you have seen deer and after you get your waypoints back on a map sometimes you can get an idea of where and why the animals all move through a location. Any work you can do before you get to your area can help you come up with a plan and areas to focus on. I find when I am in those areas I just "know" have to have deer it is a lot easier to sit there and glass for a LONG time. Dont forget the magic of doing your business as well, lot of animals found when nature calls. Oh and deer hate standing in the sun when it is hot, walking out in the open on roads or ridge lines, being next to your camp or truck, etc. Unfortunately they are pretty dumb and don't seem to follow the rules so we have all seen them in exactly these places, just as firstcoues was pointing out.
