So the obvious question is: How much for your urine? I need about a quart to last through the season. Bob Now that is funny! Even funnier to think you could pee in a bottle and probably sell the stuff as a secret formula and make money. You could call it Coues doe estrus "activator", works with any standard doe scent. About $20 an ounce would probably be about right!

Yes, good catch you are correct I was not referring to the commerical cartridge. Should have wrote it as 6.5mm-7mm RM, or the 264 Win mag, was trying to be simple but ended up making it confusing. 264 Win mag - Necked down 7mm RM case 264 STW - Necked down 7mm STW I think these would be straight forward. I have 6-284 and going from 6.5 to 6 does not require anymore work than loading the 6.5, just different dies and proper loads.
-
Do you have to have a factory loading or are you considering wildcat rounds? Are you set on going bigger, you mentioned 308 cal? What are you planning on hunting? My opinion: If you reload already and assuming you are after deer size game I would love to have a 6.5mm Rem Mag or 264 STW. You may have shorter barrel life depending on how hot the loads are you use but this would be an ideal deer/antelope rifle. You could push a 130gr bullet at around 3500fps in the STW and the RM would not be far behind. That is smokin' in a bullet that should have +.5 to +.6 BC depending on which mfg bullets you choose. Recoil should not be too much of an issue and you will be hard pressed to find better ballistics in anything else. Brass will be cheaper in the RM since you can neck down your existing 7RM brass. Either way the dies are probably going to run you around $200 - $300. If you are looking for a big Elk or Bear rig don't waste your time on the .308's and go for the .338

I used Guns Etc for the last gun I had built. They were not the cheapest but they were all good guys and very helpful, they contacted the seller on their own to confirm delivery and had all the paperwork ready for me when I got there. I have also had a lot of work don by Van Horn's in Gilbert and I am sure they could help you out as well. You may also try asking the guys out at the Rio Salado range. If you want to go cheap almost all the pawn shops have FFL's, but their are plenty of smiths in the east valley that could help.

No way I am doing this either, my wife and here mom have dont the midnight madness thing but I will pass. Seems like you can pretty much get the same deals online now days anyway. Glad someone gave it a go and reported back though!

if I shot the deer you have in the pic I would have it mounted. Great looking deer and the memories always make it worth it!

I like these, i have the scopecoats but on the 15's it is cumbersome to take them on and off. I will take a pair!

No offense but I am trying to figure this out, from a physics standpoint it is not possible (20% more cap than the WinMag in the RUM) . I do agree the short mags tend to be more efficient but the case capacity does not compare and with better powders such as H1000 and Retumbo velocities are at least 10% higher in the RUM. With heavier bullets 180-200gr this is very significant. However it sucks to shoot the RUM which is a beast for long sets at the range, even with a break it gets tiresome. For an all rounder I agree the 300 WSM is a great round. For the OP I would go the WSM (short action = lighter rifle) route or even better pic a 7mm cartridge where the BC's can't be touched unless you move all the way up to the 338's, 6.5's are close and IMO would rank at the top with the 7mm's.

Do guns reall "like" some ammo over others?
rcdinaz replied to apache12's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
The ammo is usually to fast for the barrel twist rate which causes it to be unstable. There are a number of factors such as the weight of the bullet as well. As was described above try out a number of brands and pick the one that shoots best, inside 250yds you are most likely not going to have any issues with bullet performance in regards to a clean kill if the shot is placed well. Unless you are shooting farther I would not beat yourself up over one kind of ammo being better than another, shoot what your gun likes. -
The 25-06 does kick a little more about like a 270. You can get the low recoil 243 and 7mm-08 loads from Remington for break-in and to get comfortable. My buddy did this with his daughter on the 7mm. .243 ammo is probably more readily available with a lot of choices for a little less money than the most other rounds. My daughter held every gun at Sportman's and Bass Pro we probably made at least 3 trips to each. She kept going back to the Tikka T3 lite and the Win Featherweight. The Tikka is a steal so we went with that, oh and they have a 1 MOA guarantee even on their lowest end model. All the other youth models were heavier than these 2 guns or did not have the same balance and felt heavier.

Good practice round for .243 for kids?
rcdinaz replied to Airbusdriver's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Sportsman's carries the HSM brand and you can get Berger Hunting VLD's in them for the .243. We put the 95gr through my daughters Tikka and they shot very well. The VLD's will have the highest BC's if this is something you carry about. I also shoot the Win CT's in 95gr through a 6mm and they have never let me down. -
Yep, that scope should work fine. I have the Viper PST on my 7mm Dakota and an NXS on my 300RUM that both sit on 1 piece 20 MOA bases. There are no issues to get to 1K and beyond.
-
If you have a scope with target turrets then they are useful. The 20 MOA base would allow for more vertical adjustment, in other words your horizontal cross-hair (and stadia) will have at least 20 more MOA canting the barrel further up while maintaining full field of view in your scope. If you are simply using a ballistic reticle of some type there is not much point in adding elevation you already have stadia on the reticle that allow you a fixed amount of holdover. You should not need much more than 20 MOA if you have a scope built for long range shooting and range compensation this is good out to 1,000 yds in most caliber with a scope made for this purpose. There are a million or so posts on this subject at snipers hide or long range hunting you may want to check there for more details and some of the diagrams/illustrations.

How many rounds of ammo do you carry?
rcdinaz replied to SunDevil's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
Always figured a gun would be a paper weight with out ammo!!!!!! I carry two 12 cartridge shell holders (24) Actually it is a club once out of ammo and you have to go caveman. -
At Bass Pro they usually have quite a few rifles on sale. My buddy has the blind above and it is a pretty nice and well built.

Ugggg! Devils completely forgot how to tackle, painful to watch!

Very nice! That rest isn't to shabby either. Good luck in competition, looks like it should win a few!

I won't do a full fledge review of the FHF Gear Bino Harness, but I'm liking it. It is a little more compact than the badlands bino harness, although I think the badlands bino harness is probably offers more weather protection. Biggest problem with the badlands one is if I had the flap open and bent over too far, my binos would slide out and the elastic straps on the badlands bino harness would let my binos smack the ground. I didn't like that... I don't like the traditional crooked horn straps because of the tension that you fight when you lift the binos up to your eyes. Especially if windy, those straps shudder in the wind and I can't hold my binos still. The straps always seemed to loosen up throughout the day also. The FHF Gear bino system is pretty heavy duty. Mine is built out of cordura nylon in multicam pattern, and is upsized a bit for my 8x42 geovids. It is kind of loud when scraping against vegatation. I noticed that during archery deer when crawling in on a buck and I could hear every week scratching against it. Not too much of a problem unless under 60 yards, I'd guess... Went back to my 'customized harness' for my archery elk hunt. The harness on the FHF gear bino system doesn't contain any elastic, but is very comfortable, even under a pack. Here are some pictures. Thanks, Ron Thanks Ron! I am liking the looks of that. Oh by the way great looking Kuiu jacket you have, love my Kuiu gear!

I miss the chance to hit two weekends! I wish they would cut the tags back and allow the 10 days. They should charge more for these hunts to make up for the lost tags. You would think this would be easier to manage as well. 300 hunters with a 15% success rate stinks anyway.

What sort of tripod/tripod head are you running?
rcdinaz replied to mp_moody's topic in Optics and tripods
Bogen tripod with pistol grip stays in the truck it is HEAVY. Benro Carbon Fiber with a Jim White head - tripod is discontinued but it is only 2lbs so I pack this for the spotter. Slik compact with slik head - I pack this one as well for my 15x56's, I don't think the slik's can be beat for value & function. I have a bogen ball head that is pretty light as a back-up head. Couple of things: Carbon fiber seems to transmit vibration more than aluminum. Pistol head IMO is not as smooth as a standar head. The Jim White head is very slick, I am glad I bought it. Other tripods I like: Vortex - ultralight model (high country?) Slik - carbon fiber looks like a very good value on Amazon Outdoorsman's - dont have the funds this year after buying the Swaro HD 80 -
The FHF one looks good, is it as comfortable as the crooked horn set up? Is it light, looks pretty heavy duty? Last questions, could you mod this one to work with the crooked horn? Thanks for the feedback!

That is horrible! Keep an eye on Craigslist. Are you without gear for an upcoming hunt now? The forum should start a section where we can loan extra gear would be better than giving it away at a yard sale. I am in the Valley so it is not convenient but could help if you will be without gear for a hunt.

A certain % of the population will always be nuts! Looks like you found where a big portion of them hang out.

I had one stolen a few years back from in front of my house. There are a lot of people out there that are apparently equally brave and stupid! I just had the stereo in my truck stolen 2 months ago as well so I feel for you I am sick of it. Nothing happens when they get caught, drives me nuts!
