Hunting boots: what's good and what isn't?
rcdinaz replied to CouesSlayer77's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
Meindl are nice and well made and I was a Danner guy for a long time. Since then I have broken down and started buying higher end boots mostly from REI. For a lighter boot the Asolo Fugitives I have worn the last 2 year are the best I have worn and for packing with a moderate to heavy load Zamberlan's have been awesome. I added Lathrop inserts to the Zamberlan's and after a lot of hiking with a pack I may be sore but my feet never are. Go try on a bunch of them on and Cabelas, Bass Pro, and REI find what fits best and has the features you want and ignore the brand as long as it is a quality made boot. Add after market inserts to any boot you get and your feet will be very happy and you will have more stamina. You will be surprised how much better your feet and ankles can feel if you take the time to get things right. Good luck! -
Congratulations! Nothing like a sheep hunt amazing animals.

That is awesome! I would keep that one just the way he is and put him on a skull hooker. The broadhead stuck in their is incredible!

Once/if you get drawn you need to attend the AZ Sheep Society meetings and become a member. You will get a lot of help and recommendations if you are friendly and talk to the guys there. I did my hunt without a guide and so did the other hunter I met in the area. We helped each other out a lot and I got a lot of great advice from the old timers in the sheep society. A number of them showed up to help us hunt as well so there were days when we had a LOT of eyes. Good luck!

Nice gun! Go for it.

Mostly head as said above behind the bush to the right of the Javalina butt sticking out of a bush (maybe a cactus.

The dryer sheets do work some even stuck in your pockets. Or you could just bring me on your hunt as the dang skeeters and gnats seem to love me. My dad and one of my buddies commented they were glad I was there on our last duck hunt because the bugs weren't bothering them at all. Of course I told them it was because they taste like $hi^...

Very nice!!!

I plan to try Ramshot myself this summer. I have heard a lot of good feedback on it. Is it very temp sensitive? I think H1000 is great because it seems to have almost no change even with our crazy heat.

Sounds like a great hunt, congrats!

I really like the 4831SC (243 & 6x284) and H1000 for the magnums (7mm DAK & 300 RUM). I usually use Fed Match primers but recently switched to CCI Mags for my 7mm Dakota. I did thi becuase one of the sister rifles of mine was being used in bench (heavier barrels) and he had incredible results. Since I switched from Retumbo to H1000 at the same time I am not sure which tightened up my groups. For my dads 270 we used 4350 as was suggested above. I would suggest you try some larger bullets in the 300 to take advantage of the cartridges potential. You may find that based on the twist rate of your barrel the heavier bullets are the ticket for the small groups. My 300RUM will sho0t 150's okay but as I move up to 190's (VLD's) it really starts to shine.

Keep up all the great work! Thanks!

Going on the 13th as well! :D :D

Okay, dumb question... Is there a list anywhere on the forum of gunsmiths people would recommend? Seems like a good sticky or poll question or something since it gets asked every week.

It is official. I have joined the dark side.

Congrats 308 nut! Can't wait to see the finished product and the results. I really like the 4831sc, I use it in my 6x284 with 95gr CT's. -
Nice! I saw them do this at the zoo as well. If you are taking a new hunter the zoo is totally worth a trip so they can get an idea of what they are looking for. We used to have passes for the kids and my wife used to roll her eyes every time I made them go to the desert habitat area.

Nice deer! pretty good mass kind of looks like an eastern whitetail.

Good choices! I am looking at changing my 300 over to 338 when the barrel starts getting tired. I probably have a couple of seasons before it is an issue. There is so much info on the Edge now and a lot of good feedback, I will probably go that route. Good luck with your build and getting your son up and running. You may want to do barrel break in with the Remington reduced loads and get him used to shooting the gun before you graduate to full charges and heavier bullets. Just a thought.

TAM good input I did not know about Mexico restricting bullet size. I am taking my 7

Ducks in the desert
rcdinaz replied to rcdinaz's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
we pretty much stick to poppers or kabobs. We soak them in a brine or milk and then cut into small pcs and put them in bbq sauce. After that we roll them in a little bacon and grill them on skewers or toothpicks. They disappear like candy. We add a bit of cheese or a pepper sometimes as well. This summer I am going to try and learn to do smoked meats, everyone says that is a great way to do duck. -
Went out duck hunting since I am not a lucky late tag holder! It has been a tough year not a lot of ducks. These were from Roosevelt yesterday. My first Pintail drake and it is a really good looking one.

Either 338 is awesome! The bullet is moving faster in the 7 and the 30 so the barrel life is decreased. 3,200 to 3,300 fps is tough on a barrel. 308 nut I agree with your take on the 338 but I am not sure what you mean regarding .308 bullets, they tend not to have higher BC's than the 7's. The 180gr Bergers have a .337BC which you can't get to in the 308's, even the 7mm 168's are very close to the big 210's in 308. It seems that it is tough to get the big 300's up to the speeds you can achieve with the 7's? I realize from your other posts you know the the ballistics topic very well but everything I have seen shows the 7's have an edge on the 308. Again the 338 is almost impossible to beat. Interesting article on the 30 caliber bullets from Berger: http://www.longrangehunting.com/articles/30-caliber-1.php

Keep it a 7 or trade me for my stainless 300 RUM model 70 with a borden stock, muzzle break, action trued and trigger reworked. I really like the 7's, shooting a 7mm Dakota right now with a 7mm RM in the works.

Yeah the Barnes test was interesting. Good news is there are so many good choices now. I am pretty much shooting bergers in 7mm and 308 calibers, hard to beat the BC's and all the good results everyone is having. I know they punch through 3/8" steel plate at 750 yards like it isn't there and I don't know many animals built out of steel. I have also had good results out of Nosler and Hornady bullets. On the topic of expansion that is still a tough one since where you hit the animal has as much or more to do with what the bullet does as the velocity will have. Good shoulder shots and high misses that catch spine tend to anchor animals where they are standing.
