    mildot question

Old post but I wanted to add one thing, you don't need to have the scope on a specific setting for a ffp mildot. You do need to know what the factory setting is but the mildots can be used with a multiplier on the lower settings. The Vortex PST's have it clearly marked as you lower the magnification, 2x, 4x, etc..

    Vortex Custom Turrets

I have a Vortex also and keep waffling on the turrets. In AZ the altitude and temp conditions can be so radically different that it is probably easier to use shooter or print range cards from the Vortex site than be worried my turret is off for the conditions. Of course i may change my mind again.

    which gun and why

I agree with all the reasons given on the 7WSM, especially the higher BC's and a bunch of bullet choices. On the 7mm RM suggestion it is something to think about. If you ever plan a hunt in another country and the airline loses your ammo or you somehow forget it the likelyhood of finding factory loads is very hgh, nt so much with the newer stuff. I have a 7mm Dakota and so far the Berger HVLD 180's are looking pretty good but I know there is also a lot of good reports on the 168's. You can get HSM ammo already loaded with the 168's, would be a good way to start and do barrel breakin and you would have some good once fired brass afterwards.

    New horse in the stable

nice rig and it looks like it is starting to shoot well. When you get the redding die you wont have the xpander ball issue jst remember to swap out the ball for the undersized depriming pin holder. You should not need the ball again if you are using fired brass and the neck run out should be very little with just the bushng. After a few more trips to the range you will probably get a little more velocity and those groups will probably shrink a little more. Good luck!

    Coues Newbie - Unit 32

I am in 32 as well, it is a very large unit with many good places. We have hunted the areas off of Klondyke Rd as suggested for over 20 years off and on. I would start with the AZ G&F info on the unit they pretty much list most of the top areas and how to get to them. Good Luck!

    AR500 steel

You are right I think it is closer to AR400 steel. I had looked it up based on the brinell rating he said it had, something like 380. I think you should be good with it for awhile I had the mild steel as well and drilled both the same way you did and there was a BIG difference in what it took to get a hole in the armor plate stuff. Happy Shooting!

    AR500 steel

I know this is an older post but Industrial Metal Supply had already cut 12 x 12 squares of armour plate they were selling for really cheap. I think they were around $30. You will have to drill the holes but I was able to do so it just took a little longer. They also have all kinds of precut mild steel square and round for cheap. The problem with the mild steel is the big guns go through it like it isnt there. I had the 300RUM out and even at 725 yds with a 190 Berger HVLD it put a perfect hole right through the mild steel plate.

    Backpacks?

I have the Eberlestock Dragonfly and X1 both great packs. You can make any pack carry your rifle if you spend some time with it and Eberlestock sells the rifle carriers seperately if you already have money into a pack you like. It is nice that the Eberle's keep the rifle against your back and accesible, also makes it easy to balance the rifle weight. All that being said this year I am using a Kuiu pack with a carbon frame. I have not gotten it out in the field yet but it seems to be a very well designed pack with a lot of features and it is stupid light.

    Glassing

I like your description. I have sat for a couple of hours and looked at the same object under a tree that I was sure was a deer but he did not move the entire time and then finally picked his head up. A little while later the sun was low enough that I could see him with my bare eye but in the middle of the day with no shadows he was almost invisible. My point is even from the same spot you get a whole differnt view as the day goes on and the light changes and they can stay still for a very long time.

Ideal Range for Glassing w/ 15x Binos

I tend to glass further with my 15's 300yds out to around a mile. The futher distances give you a much better field of view to look at so you can cover a lot of ground. The point made about watching the close stuff is a good one. I take breaks and lean back and watch the hill, draw, flat, etc nearest me for a while. Inside of 300 yards there is a good chance of catching animals with your bare eyes (assuming 20/20) since you have a very wide field of view you can watch a very large area. If I know I am in a spot where I expect to see game then I will use the bino's to really pick apart the closer terrain.
