    Down to the Wire Buck

Hey Tj, Thanks. Wednesday night was the coldest night of the week. It was 28 degrees when I got out of the truck Thursday morning to recover him at 545am. We were able to quarter him and bone out the rest. No meat loss as far as I could tell. Dropped it off and Wild Game Processing. Think I am good.
  4. Had some good friends, several members on here, help on a long week of hunting. We left last Wed and through Sunday did not see any real activity. The heat was terrible. Deer activity low. I had to come back to work Monday and Tuesday. I was able to leave yesterday about 11. I was in my glassing area by 2 and the wind was horrific. I knew I had to be in the wind in order to find the deer on the opposite ridges out of the wind. It was not long and I started glassing bedded deer. Most were doe until something caught my eye at 650 yards. It looked to be a mature buck. He was bedded facing the other direction. I waited until about 5 and made my move. I was able to close the distance and swing around on him getting him to broadside. I am not a big fan of shooting at a bedded buck however, I was losing light and with the wind, I did no think he was getting up. I ranged the buck and settled in for the shot. I waited for about 5 min for the slightest drop in wind and when it came, I touched the trigger. The rapport of the hit was unmistakable except for the fact the buck stood up. I knew he was hit hard based on his body reaction. I put another round down range and then proceeded to watch the buck walk about 20 yards and bed down. I made the hard decision to leave him for the night. I didn't sleep a lick last night. I was up at 330 and back down in my spot as the sun rose. I glassed the area and headed in. I found him dead 15 yards from where I put him to sleep. My first shot was a double lung shot and my second was liver. I have no idea how that deer took two 175gr partitions and didn't die infront of me. I had a buddy with me this morning and I owe a lot of credit to him. We packed him out and I was back to Tucson by 11. Good Luck to everyone.

1 out of 2 tags filled

Awesome Job Jimmy. I know you wanted to tag out too but to be able to be a part of Joey smoking a buck, now two years in a row, has to be more rewarding. Great job. Jimmy, Justin mentioned this lion kill resembled your buck from last year....holy crap, they could be twins. That thing looks identical to your '12 buck!

    Down to the Wire Buck

Several reasons; 1. The deer were bedded on south east facing slopes in the shade of day already. I spotted doe's and a small buck at about 450 yards and they had me pegged sitting in the bright sun of a west facing slope. I knew that when the sun went behind the mountains it would make it easier for me not to stand out like a sore thumb in the broad daylight. 2. I was hoping the wind settled as the sun settled 3. I was hoping the buck would get up as it got closer to last light. not sure if any one of these reasons made a hill of beans difference but there ya have it.

    Berger bullets for hunting

175gr. They go right through the deer and I'm sure they perform exactly the way they are supposed too. Problem is small entry small exit minimum blood.

    Down to the Wire Buck

I'm not bragging and in the future I highly doubt I will take a shot this long again. The shot was 488yds. My equipment is a rem 700 7mm rem mag. I have a leupold 4x12 with custom turrets. I was cranked to 8 MOA for the shot. I was shooting a 175gr partition custom load. I get about 2950fps at the muzzle. Not sure if it was the distance or what but I'm questioning the partition after a double lung shot not killing the buck right away. Maybe it was distance and not bullet. In the future I will try all I can not to take a shot at that distance.

Thanks for the words fellas. After looking at the bucks teeth and getting a few opinions, this buck seemed to be an old fella.....He is heavy. His bases were just shy of 5" and he carried the mass up to the 3rd width measurement. Again, thanks for the congrats and good luck to you all who still have tags to fill.

    Berger bullets for hunting

I have recently been considering making the change to the 168 VLD for my 7mm. I started a thread a month or so ago asking for opinions. My concern was meat loss. I have been shooting partitions for about 3 years now, before that the accubond. Im a die hard nosler guy. However, last year my wife made a lethal shot on her buck with the partition and it took backing out and recovering the animal 5 hours later.....not to mention the tracking job was not easy. The buck I shot 2 nights ago was with a partition. I double lunged him on the first shot (full pass through) and had another full pass through in the liver on my follow up shot. I watched the buck go 20 yards and bed down very much alive. I backed out and had to recover him yesterday morning. I know its all a matter of opinion and I am a HUGE believer in the Nosler product. With that said, being a reloader, I am always trying to improve things. I will be developing a load for the VLD for next year starting real soon. Id rather have a little meat loss and save the anxiety of not dropping the animal where he stands. I am also interested in hearing more opinions.

    Son's 1st buck!

Great Job. I have 18 months for my oldest to get his first Jr tag. This gets me fired up!
  15. I shoot in my backyard all the time and technically I am in city limits down here in Tucson. One time, several years ago, someone called the cops on me. The police showed up and said they could do nothing about me shooting in my backyard. They said the only reason why they responded to the call was so the neighbor knew they talked to me. I was doing nothing illegal. Since then, they all know I shoot and there has never been a problem since.

    Garmin Astro Dog Tracker

I have a Garmin Astro dog tracker system sitting in the closet not being used. I have owned this for about 2 years. My dogs are aged and I no longer have to chase them all over the desert. I do not have the instruction booklet but everything else is there. I paid $600 for this and I think that is what they are still selling for. I would like $375. Thanks. Im in Tucson, I head to Phx about 1 time per week.

  22. Anyone have actual experience they can share with taking animals with this bullet? I'm particular to my partitions but the BC on these VLDs are hard to ignore. I've heard they are devastating on the meat and I am big on trying to salvage the meat. I know they group, I want to know about the hole it leaves; good or bad. Thanks.
  23. Im no biologist but doesnt the Helicopter surveys say it all? Since the 60's whether or not they came in on their own or were placed there (assuming they came in on their own), they never stayed! Data is right here on this thread...they never sustained a population in 50 years of data.....what changes now?
