I was thinking about that poacher when I photographed this bull.

I gave up on the input process many years ago when AZGFD caved on the prairie dog hunting and I hit a brick wall when trying to get a limited number of archery antelope permits for unit 7. I do know that a friend was able to get some season dates changed by talking directly with the unit wildlife manager, so it is not hopeless. I agree with increasing youth permits, so I emailed them this: One change I would like to see implemented is an increase in the number of junior elk permits. With a need for young hunter recruitment and retention, increasing the opportunity of first time hunters getting into the field is important. With chances of a youth with only one bonus point from hunter education being 10-20% for a youth cow hunt, one may only get to hunt once, maybe twice, before they become an adult. A youth after passing hunters education sure would like to hunt soon and gets dismayed quickly by the draw result "unsuccessful". Perhaps the permit numbers could be increased 50% to help achieve this recommendation. The increased permit numbers could come from antlerless rifle and archery permits. I would hazard to say that a parents would rather have their children hunt than themselves. Permit fees for youth tags could be increased to make up for lost revenue due to the difference between youth and adult tags. Youth deer hunt opportunities should be expanded also. Throw some wood on the kid's fire of desire.

From their website: " We often receive questions and comments relative to the number of Arizonan’s who win in the raffle. Over the 15 year history of the raffle through last year, AZ residents purchased an average of 44.2% of the tickets while winning an average of 46.7% of the prizes (includes main drawing and bonus prizes). When we have complete buying statistics for this year, we will update these figures. "

OutdoorWriter posted this on another site. " Last year’s event generated $864,415 for on-the-ground conservation. Every dollar raised for each species through the raffle is returned to the Arizona Game and Fish Department and managed by the Arizona Habitat Partnership Committee for that particular species. With input from local habitat partners across the state and sponsoring organizations involved in the fundraising, project priorities are determined that will provide the most benefit to each species. In looking at max loads from Barnes for the 140TTSX (3200 fps MV) and Nosler for the 160NAB (3050 fps MV), the data at 700 yards is in favor of the 160NAB. 160NAB vs 140TTSX data at 700 yards. 2053 vs 1916fps. 1497 vs 1141 ft-lbs energy. 27 vs 34" wind drift (10mph crosswind) Both dropping the same amount at 700 yards. -

DH, grandkid? It does not seem that long ago when your dad was my PE coach. Hope you find a good hunt. Not much in that regard up here around Flag. -

I would suggest getting a burn severity map and plan from there. Look for pockets of unburned. -
The Kaibab NF reopens this Tuesday morning also. https://gcmaz.com/kaff-news/kaff_news/coconino-national-forest-to-reopen-at-6-a-m-tuesday/

So stoked that Clover drew the statewide Governor's permit for quail and grouse😉 What a fall she will have as a 2 year old GWP. Looks like no deer or sheep permit for me this year.

https://myemail.constantcontact.com/NEWS-RELEASE--Full-closure-of-Coconino-NF-begins-Wednesday.html?soid=1132418723099&aid=22zf3vS_gOk Full closure of Coconino NF begins Wednesday FLAGSTAFF, Ariz., June 21, 2021 — Due to fire danger, dry conditions, and persistent wildfire activity during a time when firefighting resources are sparse, the entirety of Coconino National Forest will close for public safety, beginning Wednesday (June 23) at 8 a.m. A full forest closure means that the public is prohibited from entering any part of Coconino National Forest at any time. Only those with private inholdings will be allowed access to their property, as well as personnel providing utility support where necessary, and firefighters performing their duties. Forest Service personnel will attempt to reach as many people as possible to begin vacating campsites and informing individuals who are camping in the forest currently. Campers and visitors to the national forest should vacate their campsites before the closure begins, and the public should cancel any plans for visiting the Coconino National Forest for the next several weeks. Though parts of the national forest may receive rain from sporadic storms over the next couple of weeks, this closure will not be rescinded until sufficient precipitation is received to adequately reduce the risk of wildfire, and hot, dry weather conditions are no longer forecast to continue. In short, this closure will continue until conditions are such that the closure can be lifted. Work on thinning and other forest and watershed restoration projects will cease. Partner agencies, organizations, concessionaires, outfitters, permit holders, and contractors, are all prohibited from entering the national forest. Violating closures and fire restrictions is a violation that carries a mandatory appearance in federal court, punishable as a Class B misdemeanor with a fine of up to $5,000 for an individual or $10,000 for an organization, or up to six months in prison, or both.

Red Rabbit replied to Red Rabbit's topic in The Campfire
Parts of Tonto will close starting Friday https://www.facebook.com/TontoNationalForest/posts/1213249789095765 The #TontoNF will be implementing a Stage 3 Forest Closure on Friday, June 25, 2021 due to extreme fire danger. Some lakes, roads and recreation areas will remain accessible. The official Stage 3 Forest Closure order will be released tomorrow afternoon with a closure map with details of restricted and accessible areas. -
gunsmith, one radar site shows a small tanker and two cropdusters working around Casner. I sure hope it does not crest out to the east.
-
gunsmith, thanks, but i posted a link to that map 2 hours ago. It shows the fire last night down in the canyon, but not coming out of the canyon into 6b as adicted mentioned. I was wondering if he had any updated/current info/pics to that regard.

Just got the "set" notice here in Kachina Village south of Flagstaff. The Rafael fire made a 12 mile run yesterday from north of Perkinsvilleto junction of Tule and Sycamore canyons. 20,000 acres was last info and no map updates today

A lot may depend on snow. I would look for canyons and draws where the bulls would be hiding. Saying what unit may get you a few PMs of more specifics.
