The term "horns" drives me nuts

Horns vs Antlers? Not nearly as bothersome as stock vs stalk, and asked vs axed.

    Cody's 1st Coues

20 years from now, Cody will remember this day much more than what information he would have had in the classroom that day. Congrats to you and Cody. Did you have a 36C tag in Nov?

Are you ready for the long shot? I am...

Without the program, I used the "improved" method by multiplying the cosine of the angle to the drop for 800 yards. Doing so, 105" x cos 45 = 74.2" That 74" is still 6.6" off. But still a lot better than using just the 38.5" drop for the horizontal distance.

This was the view from my back porch...

Rather smokey in my neighborhood today also. USFS is doing slash pile burns. The low temps will slow the grass fire near you, but some more moisture is definitely needed. Not much prospect in our 10 day forecast.

    Antelope Hunting in Wyoming

I have been putting in or buying points for the last few years trying to get a Red Desert tag. As Bill mentions, the draw for units 61, 62 is tough, like drawing an AZ tag. Plenty of other units with BLM land and good draw odds. Landowner access is supposedly not too expensive, possibly only a few hundred dolllars, not thousands. Don't forget to get the inexpensive doe tags. You might look on other sites like Monster Muleys to read some other info. Their Hunt Odds may help you choose a unit. http://huntodds.monstermuleys.com/ http://gf.state.wy.us/wildlife/hunting/index.asp

G&F guidelines for the alternative whitetail units call for a buck:doe ratio of 25:100 to 35:100. So for 400 deer spotted about 23% (30:100 ratio) on average should be bucks, or about 92 bucks in the 400 deer. If you look at the survey data in the HuntAZ book, the sampling is rather small, with just over 100 adult deer being surveyed in each unit. Seems G&F might incorporate some hunters to record data to give a bigger sample size. In unit 8, survey data has recently changed since surveys have recently included airborne data as opposed to just groundwork.

    .270 wsm

Dunno about easy. Would have 48" of drift under those conditions. But the 270 WSM is a nice cartridge for NA that has sane recoil.

I believe the Accubond is only available in 100, 130 and 140 grain weights for .277 caliber. A bigger bullet will drop more, but have less wind drift and more Energy, but the practical difference between the 140 and 150 will be very small. I doubt an elk will tell the difference with 10 grains more in the lungs, and a 140 will be plenty for elk. Better to have a rifle with manageable recoil that one can hit what they're aiming at, rather than a bigger mangleum that causes flinching. Recall the development of the 7mm Rem Mag for elk in that regard. Keep terminal velocity above 1800 fps with the 140 Accubond for reliable expansion, that'll be out to about 800 yards, plenty far.

    .270 wsm

I would choose the Nosler 140 Accubond or the Hornady 150 Interbond. They're bonded bullets with good BCs. Some reloading data is on the Nosler website. H4350, H4831sc, Ramshot Hunter would be good powder choices. What 270 bullet were you thinking for 165gr? Sounds more like a 30 cal weight.

If one looks at the buck:doe ratio in the Hunt AZ book, one can notice the gradual decline in the ratio in the last 60 years since 1946 (not since just the widespread use of 15x binos). What is the unsaid change in the age structure????? I did an analysis of 36C regarding WT population, permit numbers and success %. I will need to dig that up.

    Seven Sacred Pools

Enjoyed some warmth in Sedona today. The side of Courthouse in the morning glow as I entered the red rock country. Took a few short hike to the Seven Sacred Pools near Soldier Pass. Was hoping to get a reflection of Coffee Pot, but the angle was not right. Tried a reflection shot the other way (the sunlit rock in the upper left blew out). Devil's Kitchen from a knob off the Jordan Trail. Today was "blessed" with clear blue skies and the only thing resembling clouds were the endless contrails. So today was a pseudo scouting trip for when some storm clouds arrive. Took Oak Creek Canyon back up to Flag and stopped to get this reflection picture of the snow on the rocks. It was getting late and the canyon was immersed in shadow. Put the white balance on "shade" to hopefully warm the photo and not get it too cool blue. Doug~RR
